OK, I know there are ponies, unicorns and pegausi, and that Princess Celestia is a combo-flying unicorn. So, are all royal ponies chimera? Is that how we are to recognize our betters?

It's best not to think about the sociopolitical ramifications of cartoons. We'll probably learn a lot more about the idea of pony princesses Saturday, but until then the only alicorns (Celestia and Luna) are established as thousands of years old and more powerful than any of the other ponies, like demigods or elementals.

Maybe Royal ponies are made, not born.

From the looks of things, Twilight Sparkle is in line to rival even the Princess with her magic abilities. She is also Celestia's student. I'd bet that because of that power, Celestia is really grooming Twilight for the throne... and having her brother in the family just solidifies things.
