Had an Olde English 800 malt liquor today. Enjoyed it totally. Try that, hipsters.

I wish I could get cinquante on the prairies. Guess I'll have to stick to Pil in the 'all-terrain beer' category.

PBR is the best of the cheap beers. It's still swill but dammit, it's the best swill out there. It is also the only beer I can get at the bar cheap. Nope, no hipsters here. Just the way God intended.

PBR and Fifty are good comparison points. I find neither remarkable. Both are malty-sweet with little bitterness to balance them. Thoroughly uninteresting beer.

Pabst won the "America's Best" at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

Apparently, mass produced swill was once a novelty.

Dear Hipsters:

Live it up.

Anything you do really has no effect on me, but it brings me tons of amusement to see how much you piss off other people. Maybe those angry people just don't have anything else in their lives to make them happy.

I think the next time I go to a bar I'll order PBR to see if anyone freaks out.

Exactly. Unless you want to drink cheap, then it's ok. It's utility beer, not a damn social accomplishment. If you want to impress by how you drink, down some good liquor or fix up an old school mixed drink that most bartenders have never heard of.

Or just drink because you want to and fark what everyone else thinks.

Good stuff. I like simple beers for getting loaded, like High Life, PBR, or the like. I definitely enjoy the flavors of other, better quality beers, but they also have a bit more of an edge the next morning.

I think it's funny when bars charge a little more than they should for PBR.

Take that hipsters!

When I was drinking cheap in IL it was Rhinelander and Blacklabel. The cheapest thing you could buy as long as you returned the bottles.

I hear there's expensive high qualty PBR in mainland China. I don't know if that's true though or just something on the tubezones, in Hong Kong PBR is still about the cheapest swill on the menu.

2012-04-16 12:52:40 AM
As a beer writer for an opposing Canadian newspaper, I can tell you that PBR isn't any different in Canada.

It just has a higher probability of being consumed by people wearing plaid and horn rimmed glasses.

Hipsters drink 40s and 211 in the can. They do it cause it's cheap.

I like drinking PBR in hot weather cause you can guzzle em down and they do not weigh heavy on the stomach.

It is also a good palate cleanser between heavier beers and booze.

There's a restaurant here in Portland that serves 40s of PBR in big metal ice buckets like it was champagne.

PBR is a great day-drinking beer. Get a game of bags going in the backyard, down a dozen or so of them, and you're all set.

I couldn't care less if it's a "hipster" beer. I enjoy it, and it's cheap.

Drinking PBR in Toronto is stupid. It costs more than decent locally-produced beers.

There are a lot of bars in SF that serve a shot of whiskey and a PBR for $5. Sometimes it's a PBR tallboy. Those are good nights.

Usually I will jump on the opportunity to make fun of Torontonians but stupidity is worldwide. For example, bottle service? Why would I pay a premium for average vodak? Oh that's right the image thing.

As someone who tries damn near ever beer I can get my grubby, sweaty, shaking little hands on, as a homebrewer and having done time in a widely-known professional brewery, I shamelessly and honestly proclaim my love for PBR.

Ever had some super, super fresh PBR? "Sugar cookies" might not be too far off, there's a low, but acceptable level of DMS notes, and a very pleasant amount of iso-amyl acetate.

Uh, no. Anyone who knows anything about beer will tell you that is completely false. And if they're like most beer snobs, they'll probably question your ancestry or something as well.

While it's true that a lot of really good beer is offered exclusively in bottles, I assume that has to do with consumer expectations or the costs of operating canning lines, because there is definitely no scientific basis for bottles being a 'better' package than cans. If anything, cans are superior from a practical standpoint because they do not become light-stricken (skunky), and are less likely to break during shipping.

I can understand the aesthetic appeal of bottles vs. cans, but based purely on taste there isn't a difference between canned beer or bottled beer. Draft, cask, etc. is another story entirely, but if I took a can of Rickard's Red and a bottle of the same stuff, poured them into glasses and didn't tell you which was which, you would not be able to tell the difference. Because there is none.

PBR and whiskey shot is common in Chicago too. Of course, any beer and a whiskey shot is common there.

Don't you believe it for a minute. Link (new window)
An awesome brewery, and they only can. (although I did hear they are going to start making bombers soon) Try the IPA and the ESB if you can get them

Cans provided a better storage enviroment for beer. It is completely light free, sealed from all oxygen and light weight for greener shipping. Its not the can (or the bottle) it is what goes in it. That said any beer in a clear bottle is automatically suspicious in my book

I see a lot of dumb shiat posted on here, especially when it comes to food and beer. Cans are the perfect vessel for beer. Most American craft breweries are adding can lines. Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn Brewing, New Belgium have all recently upped production of cans as bottle sales slowly decline. Newer breweries like Surly and Tallgrass don't even have bottle lines for mass production (although Surly does bottle some of their specialty beers in 750ml bottles). Oscar Blues, Goose Island, Half Acre, Dave's Brewgarm, Cigar City, Two Brothers...I could go on forever listing amazing breweries that are canning awesome beer.
