cig-mkr: Introduction to Human Sexuality, yep, that's a class my kid would have to pay for on his own. WTF does that have to do with getting an education that will actually get you a job?

Clearly, you've never worked in network television. "Yes, Mr. Letterman, I'd LOVE to see your secret room!"

Why would anybody be dumb enough to...

Oh. Fresno.

Never mind.

That exam is really the climax of the class.

Is it an oral exam? Or an anal exam?

On the one hand, it is stupid that anyone is complaining about it (I agree with the manufactured controversy suspicions). On the other hand, it is stupid that people are studying this in a class that is trying to cast it as academic. It made sense to have courses like this maybe 30 years ago when hardcore porn videos weren't easily available, but nowadays I think you fail at life if you haven't already been saturated with internet porn by college age.

However, if you are a college professor who is not in an A/V driven department like Film or Radio, and you waste your students' time by showing canned content in class, you need to lose your tenure and possibly your job because you are clearly the worst professor in history.
...

Or just maybe, they are following copyright laws that allow for a one time group showing and not making illegal copies available via other methods. But perhaps such trivial legal issues never crossed your mind.

Or perhaps, a psychology faculty member thinks there is value in the shared in-class experience to elicit and deal with issues of shame and embarrassment.

I suggest you might want to think before you preach from that box of soap...

Shame? Embarrasment? WTF? They're in class to learn something, not to get therapy. And I translate "shared in-class experience" as "time-wasting conversations with morons."

"[P]reach from that box of soap..." Ipse dixit.

I would have lodged a complaint.

You expect me to watch 20 minutes of porn in a place where I will get arrested for masturbating? WTF?

Cruel and unusual punishment.

I took a class in college called "The Social Construction of Sexuality". We had one whole class where we watched porn. And not"normal" porn either. I specifically remember a video of a girl banging a guy with a strap-on. I guess there was no outrage because I went to CU-Boulder. This was 2007 I think.

true, but it does give you the unique opportunity to turn to a nearby lady and suggest that you two could do better

No chance it's a fluke?

My deviant behavior course has a unit on porn. I only wish I had a secure enough position that I could show the stuff I used to show. When I discussed the topic of censorship, I used to intercut a scene from Total Recall (extreme violence), a scene from Last Exit to Brooklyn (the Tralala rape scene) and a scene from a Candida Royalle film (Three Daughters, if you must know -- the last scene, where the blond one finally gets with her fantasy guy). Then we discussed the concept that the state has zero power to ban the first two under US law, but wide latitude to ban the third one, which was the only one without extreme violence or rape.

Our morality is farked six ways from Sunday (and Sunday is the main reason why).

Nabb1: Not to get too pedantic, but if you've ever seen any of these "instructional videos," it's pretty much porn.

yep. just because they don't blow it on her face at the end doesn't mean these videos aren't pornography.

of course - my stance on this issue is bfd. not sure why this is even a news story at all. some student complained? at a college? be still my heart.

these kids file complaints over anything and nothing. obviously this was either some moron social conservative who was either unable to read the course description or took the class just to protest the questionable content - or it was an anti-pornography feminist.

Either way - who cares what that kid thinks? Call me when they try and punish the teacher.

/this is not news

Michigan State University in the late 1970's had a Human Sexuality course as part of the Psyche department, and watching porn in class was part of the curriculum. As was using slang to identify body parts (the slang terms were voted on by the gender with the body part).

Welcome to the 70's Fresno!

You'd enjoy This Film Is Not Yet Rated (new window), which discusses the MPAA's rating system, its possible formulas for determining ratings, and its secret membership which determines the ratings.

Citing many examples, they show that indeed violence and murder is of little concern. Sex is a big concern, and curiously show that a woman enjoying sex can be a major red flag for the board. The man, not so much of a concern.

Matt Stone discusses the Team America: World Police movie, where they had puppet sex. Ratings board said missionary and girl-on-top were the only acceptable sex scenes. With puppets. Puppets which have NO genitalia. Now, you might say "yeah it's puppets but they're characters, actors aren't playing real people on screen either." Yes, but they killed puppets all over, with impunity. They blew Janeane Garofalo's head clean off.

If you think the sole purpose of college is to prepare one to get a job, then you don't understand what education is for, nor do you understand the responsibilities of being a citizen of a constitutional republic, or the realities of modern work life, in which people are very likely to have multiple careers in different fields throughout their lifetime.

Perhaps you'd benefit from some college courses yourself?

Look it's pretty simple. The conservatives are desperately seeking a talking points issue to create a national reform education movement. Basically they want to dictate who can teach in schools and the political slant of the information conveyed.

Santorum literally said he wants college professors to be "conservative approved" before they're allowed into the classroom. In other words, he's reading right from the Stalinist, Maoist rule book on indoctrination.

If you mean spark a bowl, finish, clean up, delete browsing history, then crack open a beer and spark another bowl, then 5 min. sounds about right.

I took a human sexuality in college, for my gym/health requirement. We not only watched clips of pornography online, we wrote down our greatest sexual fantasies, then exchanged them and read them out loud. That was an interesting class.

Nice!

I took Psych 210 at University of Washington. We viewed much in terms of clearly pornographic material. Most of it cautionary tales not about pizza delivery boys and gardeners. Hardcore strange is what we saw. Stuffing BBs in the urethra and jacking them out. Old people rockin' it in the hot tub. Things no 19 year old should have to imagine.

I took that same course, same school-about ten years ago now. If memory serves, the more explicit films were optional.

Are freshmen still restricted from taking that class?

When I took it the requirement was that you had to have taken Psych 101 first. I don't remember an age restriction on it. It's a challenging class.

Maybe it was optional, don't recall, just knew I wasn't going to miss it... kinda wished I had. :(

DamnYankees: I was VP of the Berkeley College Republicans, but we never did any socially conservative stuff as far as I can remember.

Vice
-President? Bullshiat. No way were there two of you at Berkeley.

Just kidding, sort of. Actually, usually the CRs at places like Berkeley or Oberlin have more than a handful of members, and aren't moderate but beyond-the-moon-psychopathically right-wing. That's because the people who join them aren't Republicans or Democrats or anything else--they're teenagers desperate to rebel against whatever the local normal is. So good for you guys if you managed to keep it about policy and not about pathological attention-whoring. (The same thing would happen with "liberals" at places like Bob Jones and the Citadel, except actual right-wing schools just boot you the fark out before you get a chance to attention-whore.)

...In all honesty, I got exactly that far in my post before I thought, "Hmm, Berkelely College Republicans, haven't I heard of them before?" Oh well. Must have been after your time.

There was a genetics course at my uni that once a year had a lecture on genetic deformities (backed by video) that was one of the largest attended each year (they moved the usual lecture room to the largest in the science department just for the occasion.) So glad a mate doing science told me to come along, it was eye opening and image-burned-into-brain type stuff *shiver*

Oh a health science's subject also had a requirement where you had to see an autopsy sometime during the term. I accompanied a friend doing the course - that was even more burned into my brain - wow uni rocked :D

Some of the footage shown in 'History of WWI' was also pretty disturbing (again not a course I was enrolled in, just rocked up for interest sake :)

Meh on porn - amateurs.
