I was going to panic about the glaciers shrinking but then I read this. I think this cancels it out though, right?

If all the glaciers were all changing size in unison, THAT would be pretty alarming.

glaciers in part of the greater Himalaya range are bucking the global trend of continued ice loss

Let's all read at least as far as the subhead.

It's been known for some time that there are glaciers that are still growing today. They are outnumbered by the ones shrinking by around 10:1. But hey, a few are growing, so let's ignore everything else.

It got pretty cold (down into the 30s) here (NW GA) several nights ago so I can say with 100% certainty this global warming stuff is hogwash.

Well, depending on which part of Georgia, that Atlanta and it's surrounding areas are probably going to run out of water in the next couple of years might get people to sit up and take notice.

...and blame the scientists for not warning them something like this was going to happen.

Subby here. I apologize for the weak recycled headline. When you find contradictory posts on the front page of a major website you just have to point out the dialectic. Please propose your synthesis.

Equilibrist: Please propose your synthesis

Glaciers are affected by both increased precipitation and increased melting. If they balance the glacier could stay the same size while downstream effects are felt. Yada yada, YMMV, not all regions are the same, consult a doctor if you have an erection lasting more than four hours, deposits are not FDIC secured.

You know they're not actually contradictory, do you?

You might start by reading the subheadings of both those articles:

"3D altitude maps captured by satellites show glaciers in part of the greater Himalaya range are bucking the global trend of continued ice loss"

"A couple of glaciers shrinking more slowly than expected does not change the irrefutable fact that most are melting rapidly."

...and cold days prove that global warming is a fraud.

In many ice fields, the lower elevation glaciers are shrinking while the higher elevation glaciers are growing. In the lower elevations, the warmer temperatures cause more precipitation to fall as rain. Combined with more days above freezing, you get increased rates of melt and decreased rates of replenishment. But in the higher elevations, the warmer temperatures are having the opposite effect. If the air is too cold, you don't get as much precipitation as air rises over the mountains. But raise the temperature by a few degrees and suddenly you have more favorable conditions for heavy snow.

A lot of people are pointing to these high elevation glaciers and are pulling a Baghdad Bob. "The glaciers aren't shrinking, they're just moving!". The problem seems to be that there aren't as many areas that can support high elevation glaciers as there are areas that can support low elevation glaciers. You want the glaciers to be as close to sea level as possible, otherwise a great deal of precipitation is lost as rain in lower elevation valleys.

So yes, some glaciers are experiencing growth. But overall, the ice fields are declining in volume.
