Chinese Democracy didn't crash land, it's just not one of the original classics and there's no way it could ever be; it's a lot more intricate than the original 'stomp stomp stomp stomp' type beats and *gasp* i find myself listening to some of the tracks and liking them.

And it got me a free 20oz Dr Pepper.

I think they were a great band, but I don't think they were an important band. Donovan doesn't belong, either. At this point, Wenner is just trolling Rush, Yes, and KISS by letting a bunch of good but unimportant artists in. FFS, the Jam isn't even in!

Kiss it the most overrated band in history.

Not Hall of Good

By that logic, Guns deserved to get in purely on the fact that they still have the biggest selling debut album ever.

And some people are arguing that this wasn't a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham?

Can't blame Axl or anyone else for staying the hell away. What. An. Embarrassment.

Flagg99: As was pointed out by Axl himself in the online chats a few years ago, the "forcing the band to sign over the name" argument is bs. It's a fairy tale. Lots of people believe it because he makes a good bad guy but the reality is that would be a contract signed under duress and it never would have held up in court. Given how often Slash has dragged him to court (over licensing songs in movies for example) you would expect that to have happened by now.. If that story were true.

I'm not calling Axl a liar, but it's basically been his word vs. that of Slash, Izzy, and Duff, so the story has been tilted against Axl for some time now. And some people sign bad contracts because their band mate says, "Trust me, it's in your best interests!"

Not to throw water on one particular argument, but the reason the Beastie Boys didn't perform is that Adam Yauch is recovering from cancer, and they didn't want to go on as a 2-man band. So they declined to perform without him and a (very lame) tribute performance was put together.

Not quite the same as the Guns n' Roses (minus half the band) that performed the same night. Hate on Axl all you like, but leave the Beasties out of it. If you examine their entire catalog, from Pollywog Stew to their latest album, they have as much a right to be there as GnR, and far more of a right than farking Madonna.

Hrmm... no. It's pretty much agreed grunge killed hair metal, and that was led by Nirvana. Hate all you want, it's true.

Guns n Roses opened the door. Nirvana happened to be standing there.

I wish I could blame fame on the reason Rose is such a douche, but I know it's not (probably hasn't helped matters, granted). The choir teacher at the high school I attended my freshman year used to teach in Laffayette and happened to have him in her class back when. He was a self absorbed, arrogant little douche that refused to take any form of direction. He was regularly disruptive, and just an all around horrible human being, just like he is now.

The man could of had a stellar career (instead of just the great few years before the band unraveled) with his talent, but unfortunately it's almost a waste because of his complete and utter inability to work with anyone.

I hate that whole sham of a hall as much as the next guy out there, but if you're asked to go to a farking hall of fame induction as an inductee, you stop being a selfish, self-centered dick who seemingly can't deal with his ex-bandmates being popular too and show the fark up, end of story.

That's such a load of bs. Most farkers do nothing but whine about the HOF because Rush isn't in it. If it was anyone but Axl most would be loving this, but Axl brings out the haters because they blame him for breaking up the original band, despite there being many, many reasons beyond his control issues (drug use, fame, Slash trying to force him to sing specific lyrics/locking him out of the songwriting process, Izzy leaving the band early on, Duff nearly dying, Etc.).

Paul McCartney no-showed the HOF when he was fueding with the other ex-Beetles members. You didn't see the hatefest then.

Is there a reason Rush isn't in yet?

Someone mentioned Mötley Crüe and Tesla being washed up. Crüe are one of the biggest summer tours every year. Tesla are on tour right now, will tour with the Scorpions this summer, and thanks to DYI, are making more money today than the did in their 80s heyday. And they're consistently one of the finest live acts you'll ever see.

No idea. You would think, as a band that inspired an entire genre (prog rock) pretty much, they'd be sho-ins. I'm pretty sure the selection process is private.

In any case, it makes me wonder... a band like Tool (based on album sales/popularity/impact/influence) could be on the ballot in a few more years. I think 2015. There's no way they should be in before Rush so...

I think it's so cute how some of you guys want to "school" me on this topic. Omitting the big, obvious bands, I don't need to be told about Mother Love Bone, Green River, Mudhoney, Tad, Gruntruck, The Melvins, Screaming Trees, Skin Yard etc... I'm intimately familiar with the "Seattle Sound", and who was a part of the movement.

Look- Appetite For Destruction has sold approximately 28 million albums worldwide. Nevermind has sold over 30 million albums worldwide. Appetite came out four years prior to Nevermind, and thus has had a four year head start.

I like Appetite too. It's a strong album, even today. And while GnR may have had a hand in killing hair metal, Nirvana was the final, definitive nail in the coffin. And I stand by my assertion that GnR is just hair metal without Slash.

Can't post pics easily from the phone, but he's rocking a full can of aquanet in the welcome to the jungle video. And his Use Your Illusion look was often more Miami Vice than metal.

GNR best band in the world from 1987-1992.

Nirvana didn't kill GNR. The Use Your Illusions albums came in 1991, same as Nevermind.

GNR then went to the longest tour ever in the history of rock. 1991-1993. Which is why they didn't record anything else and by the time the finished the tour, the musical landscape was very different. Heck, Cobain blew his brains off in early 1994, so GNR ended up doing a covers album.

Also, GNR sounded nothing like hair metal. NOTHING.

Hair metal was VERY dependent on synthetizers. GNR had a SOLID blues base. They were sleaze rock + blues. Van Halen's Jump is orders of magnitude more hair metal than anything GNR put out. There's not a SINGLE GNR song that uses synthetizers, EVERYTHING is organic/analog: real drums, real guitars, real bass, real voices. Not a shed of electronics.

that said, it's because they're Prog that they're not in the Hall of Fame.

Your assertation is wrong. Stand by it if you like but Izzy Stradlin was never a hair metal guy, he was a straight up rock guy. Guns also showed a punk influence (It's So Easy) helped along by Duff.

Yes Nirvana was the final nail in the coffin but if it wasn't them it would have been Alice in Chains or one of the other big four. Hair metal however lost all legitimacy because of Appetite - an album that was a lot more raw and real than anything Tesla or Bang Tango or Poison was going to do.

I'd suggest looking at the video for Welcome to the Jungle also. That's the one time the band has their hair done up - but notice the Axl "character" doesn't. At the end you see him with just straight long hair. It's almost like that was the moment they said "yeah here's what you're used to but we aren't that."

I love Nirvana but hair metal needed no help dying out. The legit bands from the 80s survived however.

Piano, keyboarded instrument that facilitates keys moving hammers striking strings to make a noise. Legit, takes talent to play.

Synthesizer, keyboarded instrument that facilitates keys activates an electrical waveform to make a noise. Garbage, chimpanzees could play.

The Crue played Red Rocks a few years ago. Awesome show, awesome venue. Def Leppard is going to headline the Pepsi Center in a few months. Largest indoor venue here in Denver. Tesla and Slaughter have also been through Denver in the last 5 years.

GnR? Well, I love GnR but they played at a 6000 seat former hockey arena out in the burbs.
