The crucial thing is they failed to predict three-way kissing, body shots, whale-tails, tramp-stamps, bathtub girl, and Teabaggers.

Eisenhower was not in the Third Grade in 1962.

Actually, the changing face of futurism is pretty interesting. Roughly the same kinds of predictions have been made, in general, since the Industrial Revolution, and only the forms have changed.

It's interesting what people have guessed correctly (the internet, space travel), and what they've guessed wrong (flying cars and floating houses, jumpsuits, jetpacks, pill food), but it's also just interesting that in over a century most of the guesses have stayed largely the same. Everybody wants to fly, and apparently most people are sick of cooking.

Maybe when they said "we would have people eating paste from tubes" they meant "we would have to deal with paste-eating people on the intertubes."

Vindication at last for the 500 scientists taken from their families and forced to live underground since 1962 and work ceaselessly on Project GoGurt

Well the kids back then are the ones that have built this future over the last score, so thanks for taking a totally divergent direction because of greed and farking OUR future.

They probably also thought that if they were responsible they could have a reasonable hope of a career/decent job, own home and raise a family. Well,,, at least we got cheap beer and free porn.

Um, third-graders in 1962 got that. All of that. They were able to cash in on the housing bubble and watch their 401k's inflate to the moon. Their children, however? Yeah, not so much.

Exactly my point. Greed by the powerful has stifled or stolen and destroyed new technologies that would allow this to be possible. All in the name of keeping their assets. Nowadays, if a child has imaginative thoughts and dreams they are labeled as ADD and put on pills that kill their spirit and imagination. Again to keep the powerful in the money.

I don't expect you to understand.
I do expect you to call me a tin foil hat wearing loonies though

skinink: I wonder if any scientists would have predicted that by 2012 porn would be basically free and easy to get.

Well, yes and no. The sticking point is that, way back when, few futurists described "porn" in any explicit way in their predictions. But, for instance, Bellamy's 1887 book predicted that by 2000 most people would receive all manner of culture at home through a cable telephone network. If they'd realized how blase we would publically be about porn by now, they would have figured it would be included.

A number of contemporaries imagined that glass or metal tubes would be used to multiply and reflect cultural events, live or recorded (as lithographs, photographs, etc), to people's homes, where they would be reconstituted by speakers and lenses. They also imagined books that could turn to the right page when you told them what you wanted to read about.

On the other hand, they predicted that diseases would be cured painlessly through electric shocks and that the world would be divided between totalitarian dictatorships and socialist utopias. Bellamy predicted credit cards but said that money would be doled out entirely by the government on an egalitarian basis.

Rich's prediction for 2062: "We will have a cashless society and use digital money stored on an all-purpose device that fits in your pocket."

Something around the size of a card, that you could use to debit your account, or perhaps draw on a line of credit to pay for things. Some amazing futuristic device like that.

Savage Belief: It's too bad greed and quashing of imaginative thought has not allowed any of those predictions to come true.

Actually, it has much more to do with the following two things:

1. After we nailed the moon landing, our country's scientific efforts as a whole shifted away from space travel/exploration, and

2. Noting how handy computers were during said space race, it was determined that this was a more fruitful line of scientific inquiry, coupled with the fact that we now needed an instantaneous, near-indestructible communications network during the cold war= computers+internets= today's state of affairs.

Dear Boomers,

You buttmad cuz there are no rocket cars, jetpacks, and colonies on the Moon now?

Well, guess who's fault is that?

YOUR'S!

Instead of building for that future, you decided instead to get stoned all the way to 1980, and THEN decided to become soulless yuppies to wreck our economy, THEN you decided that it was time to explode the housing market cuz you just HAD to have that brand new Hummer and McMansion to show everyone how successful and important you are.

Thanks for giving us this sh*t-bomb of a "future", a-holes!

F*ck you. F*CK! YOU!

Signed,

People born after 1963
