spongeboob: Dinobot: Couldn't she have gone by Mary or Theresa instead?

/there is a reason why I don't use my middle name
//My mom gave me a girly one.
///*shakes tiny fist at mom*

Mary and Theresa are very very common names in Catholic circles while Soledad is not common at all. Guess she just wanted to be a little more memorable.

//Being not of Spanish heritage I don't know if there is some other reason due to Spanish naming conventions.
///What is your middle name, please.

Well, there are many Spanish compound names for girls, most of them after a specific variation of the Virgin Mary. Maria del Carmen, Maria del Refugio, et al.

/no one gets my middle name.

Heh. That's silly. In Spanish it would be Maria and Teresa.

Next, you are incredibly wrong. Soledad is one of the most common names for girls in Spanish. Here's a link: Link (new window) Yes, I know it's in Spanish, that's the point. Some of us are bilingual. If you are not, use ctrl F "Soledad" on the page translated "Names for girls" what do you see?

I was flipping around the AM radio dial just for shiats and grins when out of the blue every right wing talking head was going full bore on Soledad O'Brien as the most evilest evil to ever evil. Now that I see Ailes has sent out orders, I get it. If she's pussing off the Fox machine she must be doing something right.

Interesting typo. Paging Dr. Freud...

Any Pie Left: Soledad used to be the host of a computer-tech-related show early in her career, and damn, she was hot then. Seemed to really be into the show too, only later did it turn out she thought the whole thing was lame. Especially having to interact with a virtual co-star called Dev Null.

I'm pretty sure that was Erica Hill, not Soledad O'Brien. However, that does not change the hotness factor. Both are smokin'.

Never said I wasn't silly. I caught the Maria not Mary after I posted, but she herself said she was named after the Virgin Mary, and Maria=Mary

And no I don't speak Spanish (well or with a vocabulary of more than 40ish words, but I'm working on it) and don't interact with a lot of people with Spanish names where I live now. I didn't know that Soledad was a common Spanish girls name. But Soledad is working in the news field for main stream America and a google search for Soledad and reporter the first five pages are all her except for one link on page two for the Soledad Bee.

If you can't see how Soledad would be more distinctive then Mary/Maria or Theresa/Teresa for the majority of Americans I don't think I can change your mind.

spongeboob: a google search for Soledad and reporter the first five pages are all her

OK. I tried your search. Here are the different reporter Google hits in the first two pages:

Soledad Onetto
Soledad Cedro
Soledad Inocente Isidro
Soledad Aznarez
Soledad Vásquez Martínez

I don't think you are trying very hard or you are being deliberately disingenuous.

Here are my search results none of those people are on the first two pages. I don't know if it a quirk with google or what. I am searching using "reporter Soledad" no quotation marks in my query, using them here to show exactly the two words I am searching for.

Hey spongeboob I may have figured it out. Your Google search may filter out a web page with any Spanish words. Since I speak both Spanish and English I don't have that filter set. When I set to restrict, these reporters named Soledad disappear.

Based on your PA location, Google filters web pages with any Spanish words. It is the default Google setting. Cool, no?

ecmoRandomNumbers: AeAe: Sabyen91: farkityfarker: Is it possible that he really didn't know that the term "Soledad" has far more meaning than just a prison name?

Probably not. When someone has a name you don't usually think...prison name, so he might just be one farked up moron.

It's funny, because as a parent, I named my girl "Alcatraz"... such a beautiful name.

Alcatraz is a bird (pelican or gannet, depending on the region) in Spanish. It comes from Arabic.

Perhaps you're trolling, but here's why.

tl;dr: There are so many Spanish-speaking women named María de this and María de that and María del otro that most just use the second part of there names. Thus "María de la Soledad" might be called just Soledad.
