Salt Lick Steady: I feel this is a good time to tell people about the most glorious snack food ever made: NongShim Onion-Flavored Rings.

They're in a green bag and should be available at your local korean market.

/they used to be stick-shaped

I used to get yam chips with black sesame at the local Asian market but I can't find them anymore.

Speaking of which, why bother with ramen when you can have

IBreakdance2NIN: odinsposse: The whole point of ramen is that you need calories to survive and ramen has just about the cheapest calories you can get. In my poor days I stocked up on ramen, frozen vegetables, eggs, milk, and potatoes not because it was the healthiest thing but because I could eat for a week for about $20.

Exactly. Rice, beans, and lentils are also go-tos.

Get a couple of Topsy-Turvy tomato planters. Those things take off like rockets. I grow tomatoes and eggplant.

will_2679: Maruchan ramen. Hard boil two eggs. Dice a clove of garlic and a green onion. Start ramen and add flavor packet immediately along with garlic and onion. Bring to boil. While waiting for it to boil slice hard boiled egg. Once boiling remove from heat and put in bowl. Top with boiled egg and any left over green onion. yummy!

You realize that you are odd... right?

If you are into Ramen of and manufacturer, why wouldn't you use the dry minced onions an garlic you can get in the spice section and are cheap? Also Hard boiled eggs? That's weird. Why not just fork scramble the fresh eggs in the bowl you'll be eating from, and when the noodles are done, stir the soup clockwise while drizzling the eggs in?

If you're going to eat them as-is, Maruchan beef flavor is the best, hands down. Putting other things in it always tastes better, of course, but sometimes you don't have that luxury (or only have the cup kind).

2012-04-14 07:18:15 PM
Maruchan wins hands down. Have some side-by-side if you don't believe me.

/Creamy Chicken flavor FTW
/usually stir-fry some chicken and add alfredo sauce and Zatarain's to mine

StoPPeRmobile: fark all that!

[www.wegmans.com image 200x200]

If you are going to bother with cooking eggs, just mix a couple of eggs with a little bit of flour, then drip into boiling broth.

Cheap, low sodium, tasty.

Care to explain the point of the flour? Never heard of it (for any soup).

2012-04-14 07:21:03 PM
I go with Maruchan. Top Ramen farks up my stomach for some reason.

Chicken flavor for me. Add some diced chicken, a bit of frozen spinach, part of the spice pack, pepper (black and cayenne), garlic powder, and a touch of soy sauce.

The only reason I eat ramen is because its cheap. I've looked at the 'good' brands and paying a dollar or more per pack just seems to defeat the purpose.

Screw that cheap assed ramen shiat. What you want is yaki udon with beef. One extra step and a different universe of taste from grill fried noodles with thinly sliced beef and some veggies.

Heaven in a bowl.

Once in a while I eat the shrimp flavored ramen in a styrofoam cup. I don't know how 14 cents worth of noodles and salt can fill anyone up. I usually feel worse and more hungry after eating one.

(The noodle pierced hot dog sections)

I'll take movie quotes for $500.....

Joe Clark: Yes, you do! You smoke crack, don't ya? You smoke crack, don't ya? LOOK AT ME, BOY! Don't you smoke crack?
Thomas Sams: Y-yes, sir.
Joe Clark: You know what that does to you? Huh?
Thomas Sams: No, sir.
Joe Clark: [taps Sams' head with his finger] It kill your brain cells, son. It kill your brain cells! Now when you're destroying your brain cells, your doing the same thing as killing yourself. You just doing it slower! Now, I say, if wanna kill yourself, don't fark around with it. Go on and do it expeditiously! Now go on and jump! JUMP!

9beers: Nong Shim Shin is the best but it's not as common. Mostly found in Japanese or Korean grocery stores.

I hereby certify that I made all of the above myself, from scratch, except the noodles, which I bought freshly made in Chinatown here in Victoria. Oh yeah, and the pink swirly narutomaki, that's store-bought.

Trust me on this one. Make a bag of slightly crushed Nissin chicken flavored noodles and a box of Kraft mac and cheese separately. When both are done combine them, and serve with grilled cheese triangles dipping them into the broth. Instant palette boner, and possible visit to the heart attack ward.

Both Top and Maruchan are awful, to the point of darned-near inedibility. Nissin (Asian-market only; not the stuff that's customized for American / European tastebuds) or Doll, all the way.

May I also recommend the web-based RamenWalker on YouTube, which reviews ramen restaurants around Tokyo. It's all in Japanese, but the food looks delicious and the girls are cute, too:

About 30 episodes, at 13 minutes each. You will learn a lot about real ramen.

Or there's this 5-minute promo video for what's basically a ramen-only food court, but is the most over-the-top but awesome food porn you've ever seen. SRS BIZNIS!
Link^

If you go looking for a show called "Tokyo Eye", they did a good episode on ramen just a couple of weeks ago. It includes the most expensive ramen you'll ever find (I think it was $100/bowl...oh and they're only open one day a week, and the restaurant requires a membership. And a reservation.)
You can find the episode here:

Top Ramen doesn't use soy flour in the noodles, which is important when you have a soy-allergic kid.

Maruchan, pork flavor. Add Litehouse blue cheese dressing. (Everyone tells me it's disgusting, but I like it).

Wife has pork flavor ramen + eggs. I find that is far too sulfury.
