downtownkid: I like to think of it as an intelligence test.

I wouldn't bet on that. I know people with tattoos who are richer and smarter than I am. They're outliers, but they exist.

kiwimoogle84: HailRobonia: The main difference between people with tattoos and people without tattoos is that people with tattoos don't care that you don't have one.

This.

So....people with tattoos are measurably better?

Good to hear.

These days it means you're just one more of the mindless minion who thinks they're edgy or apart. Yeah, you're edgy and apart, just like the other million people who have the exact same Chinese letter stamp that says "this person likes spaghetti" in Hanzi.

I have tattoos, but I was in the service so it's expected. Now I'm in law school. I can wear a suit and you'd never know.

I have only one tattoo and it is over my heart. It says:

"Please Coroner, try CPR one last time!"

Never said that. But for the tattooed crowd, we don't typically instantly judge people based on their appearance, ink, piercings or none.

SageC: Got it as soon as I got published... still get compliments on going with an old typewriter font and putting it somewhere in plain sight. Tattoos that mean something generally have more thought put into them and have more appeal than the masses of flowers, hearts, names, and tribal symbols so many people do today. As far as being rebellious, I guess it all depends on the tattoo and where.
[i149.photobucket.com image 640x480]">

Awww that's quite nice! I agree on that typewriter font. Makes it look masculine and sort of understated.

Also I really like text tattoos. But not quotes or paragraphs. Too much tat at that point, IMO.

Well it's not a pass/fail test. Obviously having a tattoo of a teardrop on your face or your child's face on your neck indicates greater deficiencies than a poorly drawn rose on your hip.

Another detail: They look okay for about 5 years, and then they start to get fuzzy... and if you gain/lose weight, they turn all distorted and misshapen. So by the time 15 years have passed, for most normal people it's a case of "WTF is that mess?"

Then you have to explain to people why you're so cool for having a multicolored smudge on your arm that... if you squint... looks kinda like a disemboweled Smurf being eaten by an orange and purple paisley goat with smoke coming out of it's arse.

You'll end up being one of the thousands of middle class folks spending a lot of money scraping that crap off their flabby flesh so they don't have to be reminded daily they were dumbasses with no taste.

Jamdug!: I guess I don't really care about anything enough to have it indelibly marked on my skin for anyone to see. And if everyone who is seemingly trying to be counter-culture now has a tattoo, wouldn't it be counter-culture to NOT have a tattoo?

The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Hemp manufacturers, Yoga instructors, Self-Help gurus, Patchouli sellers. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

(snip because your mean words are unnecessary)

So if you want one, get it on a place that gains less fat. And don't get fat. And put moisturizer and sunscreen on your skin, like you would even if you didn't have a tat

Actually, a friend of mine has this beautiful art on her shoulder and upper arm. It's a pitcher plant and a lily (two plants she did her dissertation research on), and the colors are so amazingly vibrant. I asked her about it and she said that she lost 150 lbs and when her skin shrank, the colors got brighter because the ink compressed.

Honestly, in the end, it's your damn body, so you're free to do what you will. That being said, sometimes a tattoo will hinder a job application, or you'll end up like a meme on the internet and be ridiculed, so you really gotta think long and hard if you want to get a tattoo or not.

I don't have tats, but, if I were to make one, I'd probably do a little combination of this:

2012-04-14 03:06:35 PM
There's 2 key problems:

A that a tattoo is supposed to be an expression of YOU. Yet people frequently go to the tattoo parlor with no idea what they want and grab a piece of stock artwork. Or vastly dumber, try to write something in Chinese or Japanese characters which clearly doesn't say anything about that person when they don't SPEAK that language. One of the reasons Chinese tattoos are so bad is there's a chart of Chinese characters listed with meanings which is wantonly inaccurate, if they're even real characters. It's a deliberate joke, one tattoo artists have no trouble selling.

Second is people seem to get tattoos to show how free they are... yet it's really a limitation most of the time. You may change and grow but your tattoo won't. It may be a saying or a band or whatever that becomes woefully obsolete and you can't remember why you ever thought that was a good idea... or an expression of your "slutty" or hard-drinking period that oddly enough turns out NOT to be representative of yourself and your life's work.

I certainly don't speak for everyone with tattoos; but I regret the two I got on my wrists. They were actually kind of an "f you" to the white collar world. I've been working in a somewhat stuffy state taxing agency since high school. I always resisted the temptation to get tattoos because I was afraid of being judged by the old-fashioned 50-something accounting and auditing types that controlled my career. After 15+ years of giving people that don't really give a crap about me way too much power over my personal space, I went ahead and got a couple tats. I like them; but I'm considering getting them removed because I feel like they're going to hurt my career. In civil service, you have to take exams, apply for positions, and interview in order to promote. Tattooed wrists don't go over well in job interviews; nor in managers meetings with tax administrators/executives and elected officials.

2012-04-14 03:11:28 PM
I have to question the sanity of the people questioning the sanity of people getting tattoos, who willingly take the time to post what they wouldn't do in a thread devoted to doing that activity.

I just had a conversation with my now 18yo son. He wants a biohazard tattoo on his shoulder and wanted to know what I thought. I told him that when I was his age, parachute pants were the absolute shiat. Time changes things. This isn't something that you easily erase. Choose wisely. I did however suggest that if he was going to do this, at least do it in kind of an 8bit style.
