If I was in law enforcement, I'd use this as an excuse to start a searchable database of breasts.

That's probably SFW. Women at my office look for swimsuits and lingerie online all the time with more revealing pics for display. Oh, never mind, there's probably some double-standard involved with that sort of thing.

At least wait for the statute of limitations to expire before running your mouth, anyways.

For a "Linux admin Hacker" he sure didnt know much about modern smartphones.

When in doubt use the oldest technology you can find. Aside from not doing it in the first place he could have saved himself alot of trouble by using a old poloroid camera and a 10 year old scanner.

Wasn't there a Fark thread a while back about removing EXIF data from pictures before you post them to protect your privacy? And a hacker didn't know how to do that.
FAIL!

Yes. EXIF editing and removal is trivially easy. He was lazy and stupid. No other explanation.

I've used Vueprint since Win95 and checked the data on every picture I opened in it. I payed $40 for it back then, and he kept it updated all the way through 2008. Now it's a free program, and it still works great, even on Windows 7.

Any Pie Left: How DO you scrub exif data from a photo you want to post?

Just a wild stab, but opening the file in question in any good image editor should let you set or erase that data at will. It's most likely in Image Properties or something of the like.

St_Francis_P: If I was in law enforcement, I'd use this as an excuse to start a searchable database of breasts.

Sweet....I could score a great government contract for that. The working concept also allows searches for redheads, asians, group, milfs, midgets, donkeys, and squirrels.

I've never really given EXIF data removal too much thought because usually pictures I post are A)Neither illegal or related to illegal activity and B)Not usually posted anonymously by me anyway.

However, occasionally I've posted photo's where I didn't want the EXIF data on there. I've always just opened the image in Photoshop, made a new blank file, copied the image and pasted it into the blank file and then saved that to use instead of the original. When I check this, the EXIF data appears to be gone, but is it or is there some clever way of recovering that very easily?

That's not his girlfriend.

I just wanted to make sure everyone saw this line from the article.

"[He] created fake events on their online, posted images representing Anonymous and CabinCr3w, deleted the entire administrator accounts except the one created by the attacker," the FBI detailed to Gizmodo.

It's gone. When you copy an image, the image is the only thing copied. Works the same if you copy an image from a website and paste it into your program instead of downloading it.

A little snip (after you're done having kids) fixes that. Take a week off work, and wait a few months, and have fun with disconnected plumbing. For the female Farkers that are finished, there's Essure. (non-surgical)

I dunno, TFA said there were more pics of her on his FB page. I doubt he'd force her to send him normal and safe-for-FB pics. I dunno, it's Australia, so you never know what's normal there.

Reporter fail. The City of Houston is (mostly) in Harris County. Houston County, Texas, is about 100 miles north of City of Houston/Harris County. The story doesn't properly disambiguate between City of Houston (where the local FBI office is located) and Houston County.

Using a little more EXIF data, I was able to extract this

Any chance that he faked the EXIF data? That would be a smart thing to do, I'd think, assuming that you actually want to frame someone.

well you open the picture and take a screenshot. this is especially helpful with things like layers and other hidden data.

2012-04-14 05:13:39 PM
Heh, I routinely look at the EXIF data in photos I find online.

// mostly to find out what camera settings they used

// also, don't forget about embedded thumbnails as well

Well we can't see her face so let's not jump to that conclusion yet.

I also find it amazing how many people do not realize you find a shipload of information of of pics taken by a cell phone.

Pincy: Hey, does anybody know how to remove EXIF data from an image?

There are programs that do it for free, I don't have the one I use in front of me otherwise I would tell you the name but I got mine off download.com which for free does get rid of the info if you pay for it then it does a lot more, like multiple photos at the same time.

2012-04-14 05:21:48 PM
Was gonna comment on the reporting fail of saying County of Houston, but someone beat me to it.

Why was the iPhone in Australia leading them to Galveston?

This particular image's EXIF data revealed that it came from an iPhone near Melbourne, Australia, which then led the FBI to Ochoa's Facebook page

Unless that was a vacation picture of course.

2012-04-14 05:39:01 PM
Don't just delete the EXIF data; change it to something that will cause people looking at it to waste time and money.
