Trolljegeren: Don't just delete the EXIF data; change it to something that will cause people looking at it to waste time and money.

Yep, this. If you're doing illegal stuff and really, really, really need the entire Internet to see your handywork... put some thought into it.

Pincy: Hey, does anybody know how to remove EXIF data from an image?

1) photograph said picture with an old VHS camcorder
2) play VHS tape on video monitor and take a Polaroid photo of it
3) fax Polaroid photo to Zimbabwe
4) fly to Zimbabwe. While wearing gloves, put faxed pic in envelope and then mail to recipient.
5) LOL

Can't you scrub the EXIF data off a pic or something?

Smoking GNU: Can't you scrub the EXIF data off a pic or something?

Yeah, you can. I use XnView to scrub my pictures before I upload them to my photo sharing account. There is a surprising amount of information that gets recorded in the EXIF tag.

/it's not paranoia when they're really after you

Destroy the entire economy..... get nothing.

Change a few events on a website..... arrested.

I'm so glad this country has its priorities in order.

Breasts, what can't you do?

Wait, I see you were being sarcasmic now, its more fun to put places you have never been in those fields, I just put Maine in most of my photos. A buddy of mine puts Saturn on all his pics.

MarkEC: Wasn't there a Fark thread a while back about removing EXIF data from pictures before you post them to protect your privacy? And a hacker didn't know how to do that.
FAIL!

Well, the first thing I would do is falsify the EXIF data, pointing towards someone I hate.
Though for non-criminal activities, leaving rude and lewd messages is more common.

orclover: For a "Linux admin Hacker" he sure didnt know much about modern smartphones.

When in doubt use the oldest technology you can find. Aside from not doing it in the first place he could have saved himself alot of trouble by using a old poloroid camera and a 10 year old scanner.

Or just not thought bragging about what you do is a good idea. Rule of thumb no mater what it is that you do, don't talk about it, just do what you do and keep your damn mouth shut.

Even if the EXIF data is removed, it is possible to track images to a single camera, given you have enough images to compare. Here's how... Every image sensor is unique. Every image sensor produces certain signal to noise characteristics. Those characteristics are like fingerprints or DNA. Digital camera identification from sensor pattern noise is one more additional method that can be used to tie any camera to it's owner.

wannabe hackers, hear this:

You need to keep all your "I wanna be a hacker" pursuits completely and totally separate from your "I don't want to go to jail" pursuits.

If you want to taunt authorities with a pic online, send someone to buy a camera. Then take your picture and save it to a flash card in the camera. Remove flashcard. Have purchaser return camera for cash refund (tell them not to sign their real name to anything). Take flash card to internet cafe. Get behind 7 proxies. Upload pic. Burn internet cafe to the ground. Flee to a country with no extradition. Change your fark handle. Tell no one (as in NO ONE) what you've done. Become more paranoid. Get institutionalized (because that's way better than PMITA prison).

Then, you can be a "l337 h@xxor" without having to go to jail.

It's a trivial matter to strip EXIF data out of a photo.

That seems like a retarded waste of time when you can easily remove all EXIF data very simply with virtually any image editor... if I want to strip EXIF I just open the image file with a program like paint and then save it with another name.

There is virtually nothing in left.

From the CBS Houston site:

According to Gizmodo, Ochoa allegedly used the Twitter handle @Anonw0rmer to link to a site boasting personal information on law enforcement officials, along with a picture of a young women in a low-cut shirt that read, "PwNd by w0rmer & CabinCr3w."

Good jorb!

Abe Vigoda's Ghost: So are we checking the box to ignore the profile tag?

Yep. By default it will be unchecked (and retain the EXIF data).

For those without Photoshop, you can do this directly in Windows 7 by right-clicking on the image and going to Properties. Click the Details tab.
