And subby, would it be too hard to link to the single page version (new window)?

She's kinda right, though. I met her in person once. She's kinda cute. Much cuter in person than on film. And she has a great rack.

I like her boobs.

What was the point of that article? Yeah, she's ugly but we can call her a talentless hack anyway because she's a woman and should have to work five times harder to break into Hollywood than a guy?

How many female SNL stars had a big post-SNL career?

Jane Curtin did well on TV. That's all I can think of.

There's got to be more to being simply replaced on 30 Rock. Perhaps she rubbed TF the wrong way.

OK, Tina Fey, duh, I told you my popular culture knowledge sucks.

Any other females?

As for they guys. Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray and Chevy Chase all had careers after SNL.

Yeah, I realized that too shortly after posting. But since around Will Ferrell/Tim Meadows, I can't think of anyone that can beat that.

I believe she's good friends with Tina Fey., which is why she was supposed to be on 30 Rock. Dratch just isn't all that funny. I really can't say 30 Rock would be better with her instead of Jane Krakowski.

Isn't the career of a former SNL person always a crapshoot?

Besides, if you made your ... un-Hollywood ... looks part of your act, don't be too surprised if that's all you're known for.

But if She Were a Dude, She'd Have Her Own Show

...that might get canceled after 13 episodes. Again: An SNL gig is not a promise that you'll be doing anything in 10 years.

Chevy Chase still seems to find work almost 40 years after he left the show, despite being universally described as a smug, arrogant asshole.

Plenty of women who are not attractive by Hollywood standards have had long, successful careers in comedy - the difference is they're capable of being funny outside the context of a one-joke sketch. She isn't.

It's the same reason why Dana Carvey has had no career outside of sketch comedy. Everything he ever did was one-note.

Agree with the limited appeal arguments.

If she were more beautiful (even the glamour shots in GIS aren't that appealing), she would have more opportunities, but her lack of lasting talent wouldn't sustain her. She can do character acting, but it takes more range to sustain a leading role.

I'm sure we can come up a long list of better women who haven't gotten the opportunities they deserve.

Delightful as Dratch is in interviews and in her book, there is something uncomfortable about this framing. If we accept the premise, that Dratch hasn't cracked Hollywood because she isn't good-looking enough, then there would seem to be a feminist obligation to support her, to buy all her DVDs, go to her movies on opening night, protest the studio heads who reject her. Indeed, on Jezebel last week, Dodai Stewart was outraged on Dratch's behalf: In a post titled "Hollywood Thinks Rachel Dratch Is a Troll (But if She Were a Dude, She'd Have Her Own Show)," Stewart demanded, "where is Rachel Dratch's Garry Shandling/Larry David-esque TV show?"

Because she wasn't that funny and is only generically pretty. Dratch is creative, and is a great ensemble player. When your balls drop you'll see everything so much more clearly.

I loaded a replacement host file that disallows Hulu from showing commercials. The shows would still run, just have to wait through the minute or two of dead air (where the commercials would have been).

It re-directs certain URL addresses to 127.0.0.1. So no "drive-by" malware installs!
It's at mvps.org (new window), and it works.

FTFA comments: I usually don't have much sympathy for celebrities, but y'all are having a debate about whether a woman's bigger problem is that she's unattractive or untalented? We could have just driven to her house, punched her in the kidney, and saved ourselves some time.

2012-04-14 08:09:00 PM
Here's the thing. Even though Hollywood has a sex-difference in terms of the roles available for people who aren't blindingly attractive, and that's regrettable, Rachel Dratch has no expectations of having amazing roles land in her lap solely because she was on SNL. Particularly because she sucks. Have you heard from Chris Kattan lately, either? The people who succeed from SNL are usually the ones who create their own projects. Even Victoria Jackson has her own projects. (Shudder)

Also, poor Rachel Dratch, bemoaning that she only gets offered lesbian roles. First of all, it appears that people do actually want to hire her for something, then. Second, pity Rachel Dratch!! There is clearly nothing worse for an actress than being associated with the hideous lesbians. What humiliation! (Sidebar: considering how most lesbians I know are much hotter than Rachel Dratch, and the many actual lesbian actors who are hotter than Rachel Dratch, the fact that studio execs want to hire her is really much more insulting to the lesbian community.)

Heh. I always figured lesbians were the only women free from the "who's the prettiest" contests, but I suppose some things are universal.
I guess it's like people not being patriotic until a national tragedy happens.

Rachel Dratch was an improv comic. A very good one. She was hired to do SNL for her comedic skills. And she did a good job.

30 Rock hired her then decided she was too ugly to be funny and replaced her with that whoor-biotch Jane Krakowski.

Let me tell you, I would put Rachel Dratch's rack up against Jane Krakowski's any day. Then I would snuggle my face between the four of them and produce a repetitive bilabial fricative sound until God called me home.

Asides from your bizzare lesbian rant, which I have to admit I didn't read fully because it was just so farking bizzare, I agree with what you said.

She's about as succesful as her talents appear to warrant.

I don't know what's bizarre about it. Rachel Dratch is complaining about only getting lesbian roles. I love lesbians, so I think she shouldn't act like this is so terrible.

I saw her at Second City about 20 years ago. Steve Carell was in the same show according to the program, but she's the one I remembered. And Melanie Hutsell, but she was already somewhat known for the Jan Brady bit.

She always looks like someone who would be really cute if she would wear a little more makeup. A little light eyeliner, some mascara, a brow definer, and a little color on her lips would go a long way towards making her look less mousy.

She really is great and Keen Eddie is very deserving of its cult classic status. One thirteen episode season nine years ago and people still ask me if I've seen it. Anyway, IMDB says Rachel Buckley has done commercials lately. That's a shame.
