My teacher used to make comments to the boys about how you filled out your gym shorts. If you weren't running fast enough, he'd come up behind you and smack you on the butt.

It is too bad the teacher did not call the parents and say "Hey, your son was about to get his butt kicked. I stopped it and he tried to hug me. Unfortunately that is against the school policy and I had to write him up for it. If you do not agree with this rule then you should consider coming to a school board meeting and suggest this policy be changed".

Unfortunately in post 9/11 America, suggesting bad legislation be changed is classified as "Taking the law into your own hands".

Sometimes it seems as if the (often conservative) animus towards teachers is from some collective grudge against former instructors in the form of concern trolling.

If one of my third grade students tried to hug me, I may allow it to happen for a second.

If one of the eighth grade students (such as the kid in the article) in the school tried to hug me, no dice.

I think age matters a bit in these cases.

tasteless: Ok no hugging. Whatever. And no fighting. Ok. Those are the school rules. Neat. But to physically touch a student in a manner that leaves marks? I can't leave marks when disciplining my OWN child. If it was my child, I'd kick the teacher's ass. Period.

Dude. If I tried to hug you, and you rebuffed me by grabbing an arm, chances are you'd leave a bruise. Not by being eeeevil and violent, but just because I have very fair skin and bruise that easily.

If I had grown up in this day and age, my parents would have had child welfare knocking on the door every other week. People were always asking me what happened or where I got that bruise. I'd look down, noticing the bruise for the first time, and tell them hell if I knew. Which was true, and still is. I just pick up random bruises walking around and living my life.

This kid's parents are mad that he was suspended. They were looking for any pretext they could use to get back at the teacher. Unless they have photos and it's a huge bruise, it's more likely that the teacher was startled and the kid just bruises easily.

Since the parents appear to be making a legal issue out of it, if I'm wrong, I'm sure their pictures and such will show it.

Actually, I know a handful of teachers personally and have met some of their teacher friends. I have also dealt with teachers throughout a significant period of my youth as most people have and I get the joy of interacting with my children's teachers. I realize that in America if you comment about someone in a negative way then you are a dick whether you are correct or not but yes most teachers are idiots. In most cases teachers become the administrators so I don't see your point in trying to shift the blame to them. Sorry if this conflicts with your world view. Having said that, I don't just blame the teachers. They are just part of many problems that are in our education system.

Because kids (and their parents) will make up anything for a payday. The most miserable semester of my existence was my student practicum in preK. As a male teacher, you are VERY aware of how kids approach you physically, and you spend almost all of your energy fending them off. Kid needs to get their pants zipped up? Go see the female aide. Kid wants a hug? Draw me a picture instead. It's quite the stigma you carry as a male elementary school teacher--about 75% of the parents automatically think you're a perv.

Overpaid isn't my issue. I just think they should contribute more to their own pensions rather than just having it handed to them. I think the same thing of a lot of civil service jobs.

I teach in Ohio - we contribute 10% of our salaries to the pension fund... 10%, not 1% not 5%, 10% - they're thinking about making it 14% to insure the system remains solvent indefinitely. It's definitely NOT the same story as you might have heard a couple times.

You got it! It's the overpaid teachers' fault! It's a minimum wage job that should have zero benefits!

Oh that's not what I said. But I do know many teachers who complain about having to contribute 1% to their retirement plans when they already get paid twice what I do and only have to work 30 years to hit retirement. If I want any kind of retirement, I contribute 5% to a 401k that gets 3 % match and I don't get a pension. I don't complain.

Performative contradiction.

I was stating facts, not complaining. I'm grateful for a 3% match in this economy. It was a compare and contrast of overinflated benefits the teachers get vs what other occupations get. I'm not grousing thinking I should get more, I think they should get less.

A lot of my friends and family think the same way (I'm the weird one, because I want society to be fair).

I was once told, in slight anger, "NEWS FLASH! Life isn't fair!" As if I didn't already know that, and I wasn't working to try to fix that issue. That was just a few weeks ago.

It's funny, out of all my friends and family, I've been to the most countries (lived in some of them for extended periods of time), I'm the most educated, and I'm the only one who actually does paid and volunteer work to try to improve the world; yet, I'm the one who's viewed as a fool who is out-of-touch-with-reality (mostly for my political beliefs; I'm not republican).

Average pay of a teacher in New Jersey is approximately 55,000.

They threw an absolute shiatfit a few years ago because they couldn't be bothered to put on average $700 a year for their health insurance.

But they have no problem giving money to their union. Who then in turn makes media buys to try and paint the governor as a bad person because he had the gall to ask them to put a little money away for the betterment of the state.

Oh, and BTW, instead of compromising, a lot of teachers in NJ lost their job.

Way to go.

THIS.

Mrs. RyansPrivates is a highschool teacher who teaches AP English / AP History for a school district that routinely graduates 2k kids from her school. This is the work of an associate professer, but she gets none of the prestige, status or commendation. I work in an IT industry where I routinley work 50-60 hour weeks. My wife works more hours than I do during the school year. Sure she gets summers off, but I make ~2x as much as she does for definitely less than 2x the work. She is also f'n brilliant.

So maybe this point is true Elementary school teachers. Maybe. But many high school teachers, especially in larger suburban districts like my wife are doing more than 90% of the workforce. The real problem in teacher pay compared to the school administration. My wife is driven. She is smart. But she loves teaching. Teaching is at odds with her drive; the only way to advance and make more money/influence is to get out of the classroom. That is messed up. There are deans and vice principles for every aspect of the school and they all make more money than my wife and the other teachers. They don't do shiat but yell at kids and make sure kids are in class. That is the real crime.

Nice deflection. You can't use the excuse that teachers are low-paid in this example so you try to flip the table. In some areas, I admit, teachers are low paid and underappreciated. But in other areas, especially NJ, teachers are well paid and over entitled.

If you can explain to me what makes a New Jersey teacher so special that they don't need to pay for any of their health insurance, I'm all ears.

So maybe the problem is your wife is too comfy in her tenured job instead, of, I don't know, getting the associate professor position that she thinks she's entitled to.

The street goes two ways. Your wife isn't stuck in that job. And there's other jobs out there in education.
