BS. She may have sold 40% of the weed sold in Tulsa but she didnt supply 40% of the weed. There is a reason we call it weed. The stuff is everywhere. I promise you if you can find more then 10 acres of wild land in one spot it will have a patch of marijuana in it. And that doesn't count the acres and acres of the stuff set up along the Arkansas River.

Under the box spring was a vacuum-sealed bundle of bills, labeled: "$15,000." In fact, when officers counted, the total was $15,020.

The police are keeping the $20,000 under heavy guard in the evidence room until Federal prosecutors and take possession of $30,000 .

What, what?

The drug ring was a family affair, police said. Mayes' son, Jerry Dorsey, was arrested Monday on charges of possession with intent to distribute. He was carrying nearly 2 pounds of pot, as well as drug paraphernalia and $2,100 in cash, and driving with a suspended license, authorities said.

He said authorities had been investigating the drug ring for several years. They only learned the identity of the kingpin around noon Monday. Several hours later, they searched the home and arrested Mayes.

Why can't she just be a god-fearing, NRA loving old coot who thinks she has the right to bear arms.

Also the weed doesn't hurt anyone, people with guns hurt people. The people with guns who might want to hurt granny are only there because of the prohibition on pot. If it was legal granny could call the cops if someone wanted to rob her but because of prohibition if you have a large enough operation you'll need some protection from real criminals. Almost everything that is negatively associated with pot only exists because it's illegal, if it was legalized all the problems the war on drugs is supposed to help with would be eliminated.

Why would you assume that? I know lots of people who love everything about the plant and would definitely love to operate a legitimate business involving it. Have you not seen anything about the medical marijuana culture in California or Colorado?

There is even a documentary show on the National Geographic channel about this family in Colorado that grows pot and operates medical marijuana dispensaries. I think it's a family of like 6 brothers. They even had an episode where the proud grandson was showing his 90 year old grandmother the prize bud from the last harvest. She enjoyed seeing what her grandson had accomplished and they talked about how they used to work together in her garden when he was a kid. The mother was talking about how proud she was of her sons for starting this success business and how the new laws had enabled her sons to be productive tax paying businessman instead of leeches on society rotting in prison (well that last part was my wording of what she said). But it was actually quiet touching. They are savvy businessman who operate a large grow-op and several dispensaries. If the state had a more traditional model all the brothers would be in prison costing the tax payers about $40,000 a year per brother, and the huge cost of having a drug taskforce. Instead they are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes and running a legitimate business all while helping people feel better. It's a perfect example of how messed up our war on drugs is and what things could be like if this war was ended.

There are plenty of other legal crops she could grow or legal business enterprises she could have gotten into why didn't she pursue one of those options? The reason is the profits are artificially high because the limited supply of people who are willing to grow and sell it because of drug laws.

And even if it is legalized in the next few years, any of those amendments will more than likely come with clauses against retroactively pardoning and releasing prisoners charged with M.J. crimes.

It's always a good idea to have a plan after retirement. Many seniors are not content to sit home and play canasta, or while away the hours on the golf course. Retirement can be an excellent time to start a second career. Starting a small business can be especially rewarding, and will give one the benefits of being able to set one's own hours and control how busy one wishes to be.

lilstonehenj: violent crimes are down, yet prision population is up

Not that I agree (I think a modicum of violent crime is natural) but you don't realize the fatal flaw in your logic do you? Violent crime is down and prison population is up. I wonder why that is? (Certainly not because of grandma, I'm VERY pro legalization or decriminalization at least, but that's certainly a conversation in and of itself however it hasn't anything to do with this article.) It could well be that because the fact that we'll imprison pretty much anyone that violent crime is down. That would be because, you know, they put the violent people in prison. Prisons aren't full of weed smokers.

This shyte needs to stop.

Cannabis is safer than alcohol (you can't overdose on cannabis like you can with alcohol), doesn't induce the violent behavior associated with alcohol, and doesn't promote cancer the way tobacco does.

The whole "dangerous drug" crap just doesn't fly with what 3 generations of Americans experienced first hand after prohibition, nor does it reflect the findings of modern research.

This product needs to be legalized, regulated, and taxed for medicinal use, industrial use, and recreational use.

We need to STOP criminalizing citizens for cannabis.

Except how they didn't even know she existed before her son narced her out on some penny-ante charge. Most likely her son was on some bath salts and just started making shiat up so they would let him slide.

He probably told them she knows where Hoffa is buried. This gave the police an excuse to talk up how important yet another pointless pot bust was.

The other big complaint to me about the drug war is they admit its a billion dollar business yet they get less than 100 million every year. They try to say doing drugs makes you not be able to function at all but using commons sense and logic there are millions of people using drugs on a daily basis that function just fine and aren't addicted. Fix addiction and you fix a lot of issues.

Jails are not the cure for addiction.

Got a new idea...

Part of the motivation for allowing casinos and untaxed cigarette sales on Indian land is to allow them an industry which is profitable because they've got a privileged right to it.

I think we should extend this concept. Once you're over 65, I think you should be allowed to grow and sell pot. Because, Social Security ain't gonna be able to pay the bills here. And old people are great gardeners.

Lived here all my life and while out here on the western side of the state I haven't seen too much of it just mainly plants here and there growing wild, back in the southeastern part of the state where I am from, it grows everywhere like ragweed. and then in the really woody secluded areas is where you find the cultivated plots. Family used to own 370 acres outside of Atoka. It grew wild all over the place and rumor has it not only our land but the surrounding properties there were plots of it planted and maintained. Hell not to mention, Broken Bow lake, that area you couldn't step two feet without bumping into a plant.

While I can accept that granny ganja supplied more than they busted her with, to me this just makes the cops look even more ridiculous. The article cites the police as claiming, "...authorities had been investigating the drug ring for several years." So, in several years they didn't manage to work out (or even roughly estimate) when an operation that supplied up to 40% of pot in the area would have a significant quantity on hand? I'm not mathematician, but it seems like 40% for 4 states would have to be in the hundreds of pounds. They managed to bust her with 4 pounds. Meanwhile, just a bit south, 1.5 tons are confiscated by a cop who spent like an hour investigating ( New Window ). The whole idea of drug busts is to justify the insane amounts of money spent investigating and prosecuting offenders. 4 pounds of pot isn't likely to cover the cost of the press conference.

Well, of course, it wasn't like they could actually PIN anything on her. And she didn't pull the trigger. And the truth is that it may not even be true! But the rumor around here is that you don't interfere with her turf or you'll end up like those old boys from the Banditos that tried to get a larger piece of the pot market. For all I know, it's just a rumor that was started as a warning to stay away. But I just know that I've heard of this woman, and I know next to NOTHING about the local drug culture, and I've heard that she's a vicious old broad that you don't want to cross. I guess 20 years in the business will make you pretty ruthless.

I'm not saying that weed is a huge deal, or that weed distribution is a big problem or whatever. That being said, I'm not at all surprised about the bust. If you can't bust her on some murders that have been rumored about, you get her for whatever you can.

Why the need for 2 guns?

The weed trade in the Midwest is an EXTREMELY non violent enterprise. All the shootings and violence over territorial disputes come with the meth trade. As to why the guns? In that part of the Midwest, owning only two guns is basically considered being unarmed. Besides cops get awful creative when trying to bring firearms into a drug bust. I once represented a 65-year old meth dealer, a retired pharmaceutical executive who was busted with a large quantity of meth and, the cops said two guns, which made him eligible for a mandatory 5 years in federal prison for "use of a firearm in the commission of a felony"

There were only two major problems with the Police's story:One they claimed he pulled the meth out of his pocket and dropped it two the ground as they approached, allowing them to legally seize it and giving them probable cause to arrest him. The problem was, the quantity they seized, packed as tightly as humanly possible was still the size of a large hardback book, not something that fit in anyone's pocket. The second was that the police report claimed that upon being arrested the man supposedly asked the officers to enter his house and (without a warrant) and secure the firearms therein because he was worried some kid might come along and hurt themselves with them.

The only problem was the cops were too stupid to recognize that the guns in question were collectors items. One a pistol manufactured by the Vichy government during WWII in extremely limited quantities in an oddball caliber for which ammunition is no longer made (and he had none for it)

The other was a 17th century shotgun (worth about $20k) that would be taking your life in your hands to fire (assuming you knew how and had black powder and percussion caps handy)
