The only history my alma mater has is that Elizabeth Taylor stayed there on one of her honeymoons when the main building was a hotel, and that the guy who shot John Lennon went there for a semester. I don't know why we didn't start making up more interesting history.

We aren't always fun, but usually we're accurate. And if we don't work for the government, the bias isn't usually that bad. I was told when I began my road to a history degree that I'd be able to use it to either teach history or tell stories at pubs and parties.
At least they were half true...

borg: The best part about being a tour guide is making shiat up.

That's what I was thinking. When I was touring schools I asked tour guides specific questions to see if they would bullshiat me or admit they didn't know.

"This is a nice painting of an old man, why is it here?"

A tour guide on Mackinac Island gave a very similar story about the natural land arch on the island involving the indians that lived there. He also claimed the indians thought the island was a giant sleeping turtle.

I imagine if I could meet one of long ago natives to Mackinac, that he would just say yeah that arch thing is just something we throw stuff through for fun. Then he would tell they decided to prank the French when they showed up by telling the "turtle story".

/for those that don't know the French visited the island first
//the french are why people pronounce the "c" at the end of Mackinac like a "w".
///i don't, i pronounce the "k" sound at the end, don't care about the French

Let's see, UVa got Notre Dame's Chapel by accident, a girl walking across the symbol on Beta Bridge will be pregnant by the end of the semester, the spot where they had the car accident in True Colors is cursed to result in a sleazy movie career.

Yeah, why would we want transparency from the studies performed by scientists that influence political views? I mean, it's not like if he were wrong, we'd find ourselves spending billions on nothing, right?

And really, why all the sociopolitical poking about Virginia in a thread about the University of Virginia? Hey, UVa is on the planet Earth, and you know, humans are prone to violence, like murder and war. Man, that stuff sucks and is 100% related to the topic of the article, right? Right?

Georgia Tech has a big steam plant that pipes heat to various buildings, and there's one manhole that vents steam. At least one of the tour guides would lead people through it and then mention that it was radioactive steam venting from the nuclear reactor.

Alas, the Institute no longer has a reactor.
