Should have gone with the novelty mug instead of the plaque. I think they have a version of it on the Fark Store, IIRC.

http://www.gadgetbargains.com/grenade-mug.html

Product Description

This Grenade Mug will leave an explosive impact on all your coworkers! On the side of this Novelty Mug are the words "Complaint Department: Please Take A Number" along with a dangling number card that appears as the grenade pin. Your coworkers will have to think twice before saying anything disparaging about you! So if you're looking for the perfect way to spice up your desk, look no further than this Grenade Mug. It's dynamite!

One day I went back to my apartment from work for lunch and saw the bomb squad, with their truck with the metal disposal sphere, parked outside my building as well as several vehicles from the police and fire departments. They were doing regular maintenance to the furnaces and going into each apartment as specified in a notice given to all residences. Turns out one guy collected fake bombs and left his collection out on the living room table. When the maintenance went in he thought "Holy moly!" and skeedaddled out and called 911. They were very convincing to the bomb squad but determined them all to be inert.

They gave they guy a ticket for one thing or another.

You know, how stupid are the security guards? First, who on this planet above the age of ten hasn't seen one of these? Secondly, even if it was a really real grenade they have been watching too many movies. Do they think a grenade is powerful enough to take down a building? Kill everyone on a floor of a building? Third, if it was a really really real grenade, you have to pull the freaking pin for it to no longer be your friend and go boom. So, as long as you don't pull the pin, nothing is going to happen. Take the suspicious grenade, walk it outside, while NOT, pulling the pin. Keep everyone away from that side of the building while once again, NOT pulling the pin and call the cops.I swear you who said the terrorist have won are right. Hell, they could probably just send drawings of grenades now and have the same effect.

Well, judging the building quality from 9/11, where you could neatly and exactly bring down 3 buildings with only 2 planes; a single grenade would probably have been enough to tear down another of the buildings.

If it was shipped there in a box you have to assume that it is rigged to go off when opened and a grenade could be used to disperse a chemical or biological agent.

billwill: If it was shipped there in a box you have to assume that it is rigged to go off when opened and a grenade could be used to disperse a chemical or biological agent.

Because in that case the terrorist is obviously going to use a fragmentation grenade housing -- designed to produce shrapnel when combined with high explosives and readily identifiable to everyone -- instead of, say, a screw top can which would be just as easy to rig, totally innocuous, and probably more effective at dispersing any chemical or biological payload since you don't need a significant blast to rupture the housing.

So, yes, if we assume that terrorists are so stupid they will actively choose the most obvious and least effective delivery mechanism, this is a possibility.

Do they hire people dumb enough to think this is actually a threat, or is there an ideology in place that you're required to interpret threats according to what the dumbest person and/or your boss might consider a threat or that your boss might consider the dumbest person to consider a threat?

You're probably right. They'd look at the drawing, probably consider it a different way of conveying a bomb threat, and evacuate the building.

I think who ever was in charge of evacing the buildign just did it to be a dick. He was probably bored and needed something to liven up his day, and maybe even get him on the news. Anyone with half a brain (which apparently isn't a security guard) would realise that even if it WAS a real grenade, it would be more dangerous to file everyone past it than to just not fark with it and call the cops.

Most grenades only have a kill radius of 15 feet and an injury radius up to 45 feet. That thing wont even damage all the furnature, let alone damage the building.

And who hasn't seen one of those "take a number' grenades?
There are several people where I work who have inert grenades, both M67 and Mk IIs. Not even the obvious gag ones, but OD green grenades just sitting on a desk.
