FuryOfFirestorm: muck4doo: I take it inconsistencies aren't really that important to you, as long as the rest of it tries to support your religious beliefs.

I'm an athesist - WHAT religious beliefs?

An atheist? Then you do have religious beliefs. You have found your truth, and have faith in it. Was hoping you would say agnostic. Now, why is the whargarble your buddy above posted important, even though it now looks like you're admitting yourself that it is bullshiat?

JohnnyC: Bigdogdaddy: They're not a religion yet they want their own chaplins?

Still trying to find a way to fark that chicken, eh? When will you finally admit to yourself that not having a religion is not a religion? People want to be afforded certain powers and what not and there are loops that people sometimes have to jump through in order to gain said powers. Such as being able to legally perform a wedding for someone. The rules state that you have to be a "minister" and what not. So atheists have occasionally set up dummy "churches" to "ordain ministers"... however, it is merely a workaround for old ass laws that prevent people from doing things like I mentioned and not some admission of religious intent.

As an atheist, I believe that what we have here, right now... it's all we have. We have to make the most of what we have right in front of ourselves. For me this includes trying to help you get past your delusional belief (and I stress that word) that people who don't subscribe to religion or gods or great spirits or any of that stuff are NOT members of a religion. Even one less person in the world who is focused on nonsense instead of our very real world, the better. All in all, I think the world will be a much better place when people, as a whole, evolve beyond the need for supernatural explanation for our world and its business.

Perhaps the real deal is you just like saying things like that because atheists find it offensive and ignorant (if not willfully ignorant)? If so, you're just an asshole (troll, windbag, bully, etc). But on the off chance that you're just slow on the uptake (since I know for a fact that this kind of thing has been explained to you before and you're still pretending not to get it), you're wrong. Atheist people are not members of some non-believer religion... it isn't based on faith... it isn't based on belief... it's just that we have looked at the world and found it (thankfully) devoid of the supernatural.

s2s2s2: I get called on equivocating when I say Atheism is a religion, but the multiple definitions come about by the change in perception of a word, based on usage.

So define it. Give me your improved definition of "religion", preferably with citations to show this is due to "the change in perception of a word" rather than just you misunderstanding what the word means.

hubiestubert: It's easy to be rude to folks, but if you treat them like you expect to be treated, then you can move on. Even find some common ground. It's the insistence that someone has to be right, as opposed to the idea that maybe, just maybe, everyone might just have piece of it. When you can sit folks down and find common ground, then you can discuss things in a reasonable manner. And it doesn't add to the general level of dickishness to the world.

If I ever ring your doorbell to sell you something, whether the newspaper or my (lack of a) religion, the way I would like to be treated is:
1) Tell me to "fark off"
2) Slam the door in my face.
3) Call my wife and tell her what just happened. I probably am developing a brain tumor.

Apples and oranges. Nobody has ever claimed Al Franken or Ronald Reagan to be the Earthly offspring of the One True God.

More to the point, nobody has ever claimed Jesus is the same figure as the many religious figured before him that share similar origin stories, so your analogy is flawed.

However, Christianity does claim, by nature of claiming Jesus to be son of the One True God, that in his case the story is the unquestionable truth, while in the other, earlier stories with both broad and quite specific similarities, are myth. That makes it pretty difficult to take seriously the the "unquestionable truth" of the Christian story.

Glad you are easily amused. By the way, he started with bullshiat, and even you acknowledge it was bullshiat. It's a waste of time on my part to sit there and wade through the rest of the bullshiat. His "remaing" points were not valid. He never had a valid point to begin with, other than his own personal beliefs. Those I can respect. Bullshiat like saying Isis was the virgin mother of Horus, so that is just like Jesus is exactly that, bullshiat. Don't sit there and lie to me about what other religions say, and then expect me to take you seriously. The fact that you are defending that stupidity says a lot about you, to me.

So your argument is that a belief in god and a disbelief in god are equally ridiculous and both require proof?

Yes, and he admitted that part was in error. Yet it does not invalidate his point, which was that there are parallels to Jesus in other religions, nor did you present anything to refute that point. You just zoomed in on one minor inconsistency, and keep pedantically dwelling on it.

I wouldn't be an atheist if I believed in any gods, would I? The point, which you keep missing (or avoiding) isn't that those gods aren't myths, but those myths are similar to that of the story of Jesus. Which leads back to my question: Why do you think their claim of a holy entity born of a virgin is myth, while your entity born of a virgin is true?

Mock26:

Prove that this supposed god from your particular mythology is real. And while you are it be sure to disprove the existence of all other Gods and Goddesses.

John 10.37 "If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father."

John 14.6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me."

That would take a long time to explain, but I will put this to you bluntly: I do believe that other gods exist. God(Yahweh, THE GOD) talked about punishing the gods of Egypt. Why would he say that if other gods didn't exist? GOD also said have no other gods before him. Why would he say that if other gods didn't exist? The book of Enoch called them the Watchers. Jude quotes Enoch in the New Testament. I believe there is something to it, even though that isn't orthodox Christianity.

Did you 'believe' in Santa or the Easter Bunny as a child?
Why?
Do you 'believe' in god?
Why?
All three are childish myths.
`
As to the Isis/virgin birth posts up-thread, which Isis are you referring to? Like every other mythology, excuse me Religion, the details/attributes of the characters change according to the needs of the elite that promote each individual mythology.
A modern day example of this is the 'Christian' religion. Which Christian are you? Baptist? Mormon? Quaker? Catholic? Why not be a Calvinist or some other more obscure off-shoot of the same 'Religion'?
Like Alchemy, Religion is based on the desire to know, understand and ultimately control the world around us. The reason no one argues about their 'faith' in Alchemy is NOT because Alchemy is the 'One True Science'tm it is because 'Alchemy' is no longer relevant to todays society. Alchemy passed out of fashion because it was based on 'real world' observation and fact. As the Priests of that particular sect of Science were continually proven wrong the faithful followers lost their faith ie Lead + Magical Substance/Process = Gold has been proven false to the point only a child or ignorant rube would believe in it.
Religion has the advantage of not needing to produce ANY real world, tangible results. I can say that my God protected me and my family from that fire/earthquake/act of god and it is a proven fact that MY GODtm did protect us.
The 'reason' the others died is "God works in mysterious ways" or some other bullshiat platitude.
On a side note I ran across this saying earlier today :
If you want to feed a man teach him to fish,
If you want him to willingly starve for you, teach him to pray for fish.

Well, what I believe isn't the problem with Jesus' origin story. The problem is the belief among Christians that this origin story is the absolute truth (based on nothing more than the book in which it's published), and the beliefs of other religions (including those of preceding ancient civilizations) are false. (And not only that those beliefs are false, but that those beliefs are false because Christianity is true.)

I do not suppose to put words in the mouths or thoughts in the minds of all Christians everywhere, but by and large this is one of the tenants of Judeo-Christian belief (depending on how you interpret Exodus 20:3 - "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" - among other Bible passages), and is certainly one of the core beliefs of the noisiest (and nosiest) Christians who seek to impose their belief system on others by law and decree.

Sarcasm aside, I'd rather be led by an honest man than a hypocrite and liar.

I find myself saying the same thing. Your honest man tends to be a liar and hypocrite in my eyes. Go ahead. Throw John Kerry at me again.

I will start believing in the existence of a God
when I watch an actual miracle on youtube. Why has no miracle ever been recorded despite the fact that they apparently used to happen all the time? It's almost like it was all bullshiat.
`
But there are miracles happening every day. In the last week there were 2? 3? 6? earthquakes affecting thousands of people across the world. Very few people died from these quakes. It is truly Miraculous! If YOU would only profess your belief (and money) in MY God I can assure the health are safety of you and your loved ones. In exchange for your faith (and money) MY God will provide for you a beautiful manson in Heaven and provide for all of your spiritual needs!
`
If you can't/don't believe in god then it is your lack of faith that is to be blamed. It is never gods fault because My God is perfect in every way.
`
Yeah, who need facts/proof ? Just believe what I tell you because I'M telling you, child.

100 Watt Walrus: muck4doo: Best we leave it to those without morals to lead.

To whom are you referring?

Don't worry. Not Obama, bro.

Gonna continue going with a big "maybe" or "I don't know yet."

100 Watt Walrus: muck4doo: 100 Watt Walrus: muck4doo: Al Franken went to a public school. Reagan went to a public school. Reagan was involved in Hollywood. Franken was involved in Hollywood. Reagan had a wife. Franken had a wife. At age 12 Reagan started making career decisions. At 12 Franken started making career decisions. Reagan had 6 best friends. Franken had 5 best friends and a grilled cheese sandwich. Reagan once peed outside. Franken once peed outside. It is only obvious now that Al Franken must be Ronald Reagan.

/Do you get how dumb the Zeitgeist poster looks now?

What makes you so sure all the Gods of old are just myth?

Well, what I believe isn't the problem with Jesus' origin story. The problem is the belief among Christians that this origin story is the absolute truth (based on nothing more than the book in which it's published), and the beliefs of other religions (including those of preceding ancient civilizations) are false. (And not only that those beliefs are false, but that those beliefs are false because Christianity is true.)

I do not suppose to put words in the mouths or thoughts in the minds of all Christians everywhere, but by and large this is one of the tenants of Judeo-Christian belief (depending on how you interpret Exodus 20:3 - "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" - among other Bible passages), and is certainly one ...

No one knows any absolute truths other than God himself. He could sit there and blurb out all the answers to us, but what would be the fun in that?

muck4doo: And like a Pharisee, you ask stupid questions. Yes, there really are stupid questions. They are asked by stupid people.

How is asking you to prove why your religion more valid than another a stupid question?

Of course, I did not nor would I have ever voted for Mr. Kerry and his sleaze-bag of Vice Presidential nominee. Considering I've voted straight ticket Republican from '04 onwards (as I have little use for the socioeconomic panders of the left), I find this assertion amusing. You mistake my disinterest in social conservatism for liberal advocacy, good sir. Why would I have this account (aside trolling) were I an avowed Democrat?
