People should turn this into a Rocky style event complete with costumes. I'll gladly throw a diaphanous curtain over my bra and grannie panties.

Man, I hope I'm not in boot camp for that.

Why does every frame of this movie look like someone's last known photograph?

2012-04-13 06:39:13 PM
CRAAAAP I could easily get there from Cincy, but I'm moving outta here in July.

*stamps foot*

Oh, well, hopefully I'll be able to catch the broadcast from somewhere else.

What is the obsession with this film? It seems to have become some sort of bizarre underground shiatty movie cult thing?

That film isn't funny bad. It's hurtful bad.

Much respect for whoever comes as Apollo Creed.

I would love to check this out if it's going to be in New York City, but WTF? There's no follow up info at all. At least, none that I could find.

Does anyone have info on this?

There's no theater information yet, they just announced the live event today. I'd assume theater info would be out closer to August.

Is there any info on what theaters participate in these sorts of things? I'd love to try and catch this if there's one local.

kroonermanblack: What is the obsession with this film? It seems to have become some sort of bizarre underground shiatty movie cult thing?

It's one of the progenitor of the 'Delusional Filmmaker' genre, post Ed Wood, where the director honestly thinks he's making an incredible piece of art, rather than total shiate. Guys like Harrold P. Warren (Manos), Claudio Fragasso (Troll 2), Tommy Weiseu (The Room), and James Ngyen (Birdemic) actually believe in their minds that they're the next Orson Wells. They round up local theater schlubs that need money and have zero talent, since any local theater actor with any amount of talent sees the train wreck the movie will become from a mile away and stays the Hell away from it. They also usually stiff the actors and crew on money and wages; in James Ngyen's case, he violated child labor laws in California regarding treatment of minors in a movie production, keeping a girl in Birdemic out of school for almost a month and not providing a tutor. Hipsters love the films for reasons known only to hipsters. Some people love the films because they enjoy inflicting mental pain on their friends. Basically, these films are so bad, they make MST3K films look like Academy Award contenders (yes, I know Manos was done MST3K; it's so bad, it bends the laws of time and space to achieve a kind of cinematic recursion).

Also, Manos is really the only one of these films that's actually watchable thanks to Mike, Bill, and Kevin's riffing; The Room was still unwatchable crap even with the RiffTrax, and I don't think they've attempted legendary shiate-piles like Birdemic or Troll 2 yet.

2012-04-13 07:25:11 PM
Will this be the new remastered HD version of Manos, or the old "last known photo" version?

2012-04-13 07:27:28 PM
You know I'm down. I'd love to see what all-new riffs the RiffTrax trio will come up with for this.

buckler: That film isn't funny bad. It's hurtful bad.

I bought the new Shout Factory double-disc edition with the unMSTed movie.

Amazingly, I find Adam Sandler movies more difficult to get through than Manos.

Yeah, I'm lookin' at YOU, Bucky Larson.

Keep an eye on the Fathom Events website.

They usually have a list of participating theaters. (As far as I can tell, such a list is not up now.)

FirstNationalBastard: Will this be the new remastered HD version of Manos, or the old "last known photo" version?

Heh, I wasn't under the impression that the remastered version was finished, so I'm guessing they're going with that "last known photo" version for maximum laughs.

There will definitely be showings in NYC. That's where I saw the last two, and there were multiple theatres broadcasting, uptown, downtown, wherever.

Figures. Also, I'll admit i wasn't looking very hard to see if they *had* done them. I suspect that both are going to be like 'The Room' RT: doesn't really make much of a difference or distraction from the crappiness of the movie.

Quite true. It is also, however,a fascinating snapshot of abhorrent filmmaking, which accounts for its enduring popularity. If you've always wondered what inspired the likes of Vincent Gallo and Uwe Boll, look no further!

The Birdemic Rifftrax is one of my favorites.

I love how that's one of the ones they still reference in other riffs.

Transformers: Dark Side Of The Moon scene in which Sam is being attacked by a Decepticon bird.

I guess I'm the opposite in that the better I think the film is, the less I enjoy the rifftrax. The Birdemic and Troll 2 ones are a couple of my favorites, but I couldn't get through The Dark Knight.

Anyone in South Jersey want to throw an (admittedly tiny) Fark Party?

The theater I go to usually has like four people for these things (and me and my husband are two of them).

My favorite movie is Independence Day. The RT for it is HILARIOUS.

The RTs for the LOTR trilogy are also hilarious. You'd think that 'haha, Sam is fat' jokes would get old...BUT THEY DON'T!

I hope it shows in Kentucky. I will dress as Torgo if I can. Manos is my favorite MST3k episode. I even named my cat Torgo.
