Evidence suggests that not only do they think they're quite stupid, they are in fact quite stupid. After all, a fair number of people elected Allen West.

Geography, specifically GIS, or GIScience as we're apparently calling it these days. Actually, that's not really true either, self-organizing maps, which is the newest thing I'm looking at as a tool for what I want to do, isn't technically GIS.

Honestly, it's interesting to me and probably boring as fark to everyone else. But I'll probably be at ORNL this summer, as well as writing a publication and my thesis proposal, so that should let me see better where I want to go.

Toss me an e-mail if you want details, since this probably qualifies as threadjacking now.

Benishek couldn't even get through his opening remarks before attendees began criticizing his support for Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-WI) proposed budget that would increase the cost of health care for seniors by providing "premium support" vouchers to eligible senior citizens.

Seniors facing medical procedures don't want to dick around with finding the cheapest procedure available to them with their government provided S&H green stamps of diminishing value?

Let me dig around in my Big Chest O' Props for my astonished expression. Give me a minute.

Nadie_AZ: OtherLittleGuy: sweetmelissa31: What kind of country do we live in anymore when a Congressman can't even make up facts without being ridiculed in public?

This town needs an enema!

I never understood the rhubarb line. In fact, in hindsight, I didn't understand any of the movie. Much like the GOP of today doesn't understand all the anger towards them. Their agenda makes sense in their heads! And when they are in doubt, ALEC explains it to them.

The problem is that the GOP has flipflopped on many of their positions on the sole basis that Obama wants some things that the GOP wanted 2 years ago, and anything Obama wants WILL RUIN THE COUNTRY.

On top of that, it hurts when they want to lower taxes on the "job creators" when we see unemployment at high levels after two huge tax cuts on the "job creators."

People can swallow only so much bullshiat until it all starts to come back up.

isnt it illegal to diagnose someone without actually examining them ??

Yeah, but since Senator Bill Frist, MD diagnosed her on the floor of the Senate in a speech, he's immune from prosecution.

U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 6, Clause 1. The "Speech or Debate Clause"

"They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place."

A Representative or Senator cannot be prosecuted or sued for anything said in any official speech or debate made in Congressional proceedings. The only accountability they have is Congress itself, such as being censured or expelled. . .and that almost never happens.

"Think" is a strong word, here.

They've spent billions over the last few decades casting driftnets for stupid people, welcoming them in with promises of power and retribution.

They spent millions for demographic studies, focus groups, and neuromarketing studies to make quantify the level of their stupidity.

The GOP's strategy depends not on just getting working class people to vote for 1% policies, but to get them to *zealously* do so.

The GOP knows damn well how stupid their base is. They hand-crafted it to be that way.

2012-04-13 04:26:07 PM
Meanwhile, I just read that our state has an $83 billion hole in funding for public pensions, because the Democrats decided back in 2005 to take a "pension holiday" and delay funding state pensions for a few years. So that they could fund vote-getting programs instead. Then the economy melted down.

So you have Democrats, who sort of know what they're doing, and they cynically mainpulate things for their own short-term political profit. And Republicans, who in spite of adulthood, college education, professional experience and years in the legislature, actually believe that Saint Reagan sticks has ass out of the clouds and farts rainbow ponies and makes everything beautiful.

Here is one of the threads that I can bring up in support of the plain and simple fact that you have to resort to lies to make your arguments, and that when challenged on your lies you will double down and make weak excuses for why you can't provide any evidence for your ridiculous claims.

Didn't you see what he said? It was a different, yet nearly identical, specific example.

Perfectly reasonable to vaguely remember stories and cite them as proof.

You should always check the back seat of your car before getting in, because I read about a guy who got murdered by a dude with a hook for a hand who had broken in and laid in wait in the back seat. Every time I mention this article people suggest I'm confused and its an urban myth, but I'm talking about a similar hook-handed man to the one in the urban myth, only this one happened in a different city, and it was his left hand instead of his right hand. After he was caught, he admitted he did it because the victim was a republican and he wanted liberals to take over the country.

Here is one of the threads that I can bring up in support of the plain and simple fact that you have to resort to lies to make your arguments, and that when challenged on your lies you will double down and make weak excuses for why you can't provide any evidence for your ridiculous claims.

Someone who resorts immediately to lying really has little ground to stand on when criticizing the "level of argumentation" of others. Most people learned in elementary school not to lie, so I guess your "level of argumentation" doesn't even reach elementary school.

Damn. Googling this stuff is hard, but I found something.

http://www.window.state.tx.us/specialrpt/energy/subsidies/ (new window)

It addresses how the term "subsidy" is defined.

The federal government provides financial energy subsidies through tax incentives; direct spending for government services; the assumption of certain types of liability or risk by the federal government; government ownership of energy production; access to resources on federal lands and tariffs.

Direct spending: The federal government provides grants and loans to encourage the development and purchase of certain energy systems, such as the purchase of renewable energy systems.

Loans, i dunno. They get paid back. Maybe I can see if the interest rate is below market. Grants OTOH are direct subsidies all the way. But are the R&D grants ONLY for development of renewable energy?

If so, why would Democrats object?

Wait, do those go to oil companies? It's not specific.

http://www.window.state.tx.us/specialrpt/energy/subsidies/index.php# oi lgas (new window)

I see lots of tax breaks, deductions, and credits (some of which might result in zero or negative taxes) and the only R&D grants listed are:

In 2006, Congress appropriated $64 million for Oil and Gas Research and Development by the Department of Energy (DOE). 22 Historically, most of this federal funding has gone to joint projects funded with federal, university and independent company funds intended to develop new reserves and extend the life of old ones. 23 Congress also appropriated $6.9 million for Oil Spill Research in the Department of Interior's Minerals Management Service in 2006. 24

Which I would assume are roughly similar year to year.

Also, they buy oil to add to petroleum reserves. How is that a subsidy unless they pay way more than market price?

The chart at the bottom (I guess this is all for 2006) shows direct spending to be $71 million.
It has $35 billion in total subsidies, but very little is direct spending. Allowing access to federal lands? IS that free? Do they charge for that? How is it spending on the government's part?

Percent of Federal Oil and Gas Subsidies in 2006, by Type
Type of Subsidy.............................................................Pe rcent of Total
Taxes................................................................ . ............87.4%
Government Ownership of Energy Production..............0.0%
Direct Spending.............................................................8 .6%

So, going on a 3 day rant about how a woman who wants an insurance company to pick up the tab for birth control(which most insurance companies don't mind) by calling her a slut and whore isn't an attack on women at all.

Requiring a woman to view a screen of a mandatory transvaginal ultrasound before an abortion isn't an attack on women at all.

Ok, so it IS the tax deductions and credits that they want to get rid of. Some of them are fairly standard corporate tax deductions under a different name. Whatever.

But the language used is misleading. When most people think of a subsidy they think things like farm subsidies, where people are paid money by the government. Tax breaks aren't the same. But it sounds better to say "eliminate subsidies" than it does to say "eliminate tax deductions."

I love how everyone trots out the "Southern Democrat" thing as if that was some kind of slur on the party as a whole. You apparently never heard of a Dixiecrat then, or believe it doesn't matter? You need to brush up hard on your Civil War history to understand why a Southern Democrat IS a Democrat and a racist, and why they support Republican policies and yet will NEVER EVER call themselves Republican. Socialist, a physician has no right whatsoever to perform a procedure on you unless you allow them to. It is not up to the state legislators to decide what medical procedures are necessary just to manipulate women based on their religious beliefs. Do you believe the government should decide what MS treatment you receive should be based on their religious beliefs? Wait until a Christian Scientist gets into power. Here's a Bible. Pray the pain away.

jigger: But the language used is misleading. When most people think of a subsidy they think things like farm subsidies, where people are paid money by the government. Tax breaks aren't the same. But it sounds better to say "eliminate subsidies" than it does to say "eliminate tax deductions."

Actually, it's identically the same thing. There's zero difference between me writing up a document wherein I collect $5 from you, then give you back $10, or me writing up a document wherein I collect $0 from you, then give you back $5. You still end up with $5. Especially if all the additions/subtractions happen theoretically, without any money actually changing hands until I give you the $5. The the outside observer, all that happened was that you ended up with $5 of my money.

jehovahs witness protection: Just how stupid do democrats know their constituents are?

Dumb enought to believe that the ability to right off upfront expenses, which is something that virtually all similar businesses (those that don't see profits in the same year the expenses are incurred) are allowed to do means they are receiving "subsidies".

Dumb enough to think they are thus equivalent to green energy companies, which wouldn't exist without actually subsidies.

Dumb enough to think that programs like Medicare are basically finiancially sound.

Dumb enough to think that increasing taxes on the incomes of the wealthiest two percent would produce enough revenue to fund all of Obama/s wet dreams, and not merely a couple of days worth of his deficit spending.

Basically dumb enough to come to a constituent meeting and spew democratic socialist talking points and expect to be taken seriously.

But then again they're in Michigan, which is home to a special weapons-grade stupidity to dense for logic and facts to penetrate.

So, going on a 3 day rant about how a woman who wants an insurance company to pick up the tab for birth control (which most insurance companies don't mind) by calling her a slut and whore isn't an attack on women at all.

Requiring a woman to view a screen of a mandatory transvaginal ultrasound before an abortion isn't an attack on women at all.

Creating zoning requirements that are impossible to meet and completely unrelated to medical procedures that apply exclusively to places that perform abortions isn't an attack on women at all.

Requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admittance into a hospital isn't an attack on women at all.

Trying women who are pregnant if they have a miscarriage isn't an attack on women.

Trying to stop women from making the same pay as men isn't an attack on women.

You made a claim so you do the googling, silly person.

I tried doing your work for you, trying to support your claims from an internet source, but the sources are all over the place with the figures, all of which are misleading. Some say they are net tax eaters, but they did the math wrong (on purpose probably). Some say they pay 40% tax rates, but that's worldwide, not just US taxes and they don't say what the US rate was.

It seems that actual taxes paid to the IRS are hard to come by but it looks like effective US tax rates for oil companies are something like 10-20%. If you see something different, look at the source. "Progressives" will list negative numbers and "conservatives" will list 40-60%. There just doesn't seem to be an unbiased source for this information

Fark Liberals? What kind of blinkered and limited attitude created that concept?

It's my impression that the majority of Fark members are people who are open to clicking on all kinds of links to see where the Internet can take them. How else could you explain the weird and wonderful, the shocking and revealing, the obscure and fascinating mix of links which Fark provides?

I have learnt a lot of stuff which I never considered before through being a regular Farker, both from the articles AND from members' posts. And why would that be? Because to be the kind of people who are open to clicking on links and searching for deeper knowledge about issues, you are in the main people who are open to new ideas. People who are not afraid to look reality in the face and admit where you could be wrong.

In short, unlike conservatives who back themselves into a an ideological corner and refuse to go outside their own headspace, your exploration of new ideas gives you all a firm grounding in reality based considerations of what is really going on in the world.

Conservatives, who would rather everyone mindlessly parrot Republican talking points, absolutely HATE people like you, who can think independently and come up with conclusions which profoundly contradict the spoon fed crap they are trying to project into our minds. The more independently thinking people there are in the world, the less power these douchebags will have over us.

To their petty little minds, we only seem to be Liberals because we regularly find evidence that contradicts their points of view, and to a conservative, not mindlessly accepting what they say is the very worst thing you can do to them.

So to all Farkers- Keep Farking, you're doing a great job!

Yeah... nobody's upset about medically necessary ultrasounds before procedures such as a cervical biopsy. People are upset about medically unnecessary ultrasounds being ordered before an abortion, as well as other laws such as forcing doctors to withhold vital health information if they think that somebody might want an abortion if she knew this info.

Most political/professional communications for the public aim for about the 8th grade in reading comprehension. Well, up until recent times.

I live about three miles from him, just across the river on the Wisconsin side. but I work in his district. I work at a very large company and he is like a god to most of the people in the area. He is heavily supported by the Tea Party (that does explain a lot) and used to work at he only hospital in the area. Dickinson County Hospital, DCH or as it is known around here,

He was a big dog at the hospital, I don't believe Chief of Staff but along those lines, it looks like he wants to run the country like he helped run the Hospital.

nope.

A. The "Southern Strategy" was invented by liberals in 1968 to attack Nixon annd the GOP. (War on women comes to mind)

B. Many leaders in the South had indeed resisted de-segregation in the 1960s, some going so far as to suggest "massive resistance" to court-ordered equal accommodations for black and white Southerners.

C. Every one of those segregationsts was a Democrat. George Wallace, Bull Connor, Lester Maddox. Democrats every one.

D. Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, were elected by appealing to a united South. Yet no one called any of these Democratic presidents racists because they appealed to Southern voters. No one calls them racist now.

E. Yelling racist and bigot and charging cowardice are the only stratagem left to liberals who cannot win on the merits of their arguments.

G. It's not that liberals are ignorant it's just they no so much that isn't so.

The problem with health care vouchers for the elderly:

Who will insure them?

They are going to require medical treatment and end of life care. They are actuarially uninsurable because they will receive more treatment than what they are putting in. There is no way a private company could make money insuring them.

The option is to let them die, bankrupt their family, or subsidize their health via higher taxes or insurance rates. In all but the first case we will still have to pay for their care.

Roy_G_Biv: jehovahs witness protection: Just how stupid do democrats know their constituents are?

I'd say let Canada have Michigan, bu tI'm prrety sure they don't want it.

My formerly-Republican brother (Michigander) turned 65 around the time the Medicare D passed. He was enraged that he wouldn't be able to get prescriptions in Canada anymore. Denishek should have known better. Sault Ste. Marie is minutes away from Canada. There are parts of Michigan that are north of Canada (hey, Detroit!), and people have been going over the border for cheaper, better medical care for years. One of my cousins offered to put me up if I would just get lasik in Canada instead of the U.S. because she said it was better there and cheaper (ten years ago), even with 100% out of pocket. Seriously, people in Michigan know for a fact that they can get great care over the border because they go over the border for great care.

MFL: A. The "Southern Strategy" was invented by liberals in 1968 to attack Nixon annd the GOP. (War on women comes to mind)

When your agenda amounts to "barefoot and pregnant", you should expect to be called on it. I would no more vote for Rick Santorum than for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and for exactly the same reason.

1) I might care that these guys were Democrats, if any of them were on the ballot.

2) Jesse Helms was a Republican. I might care, if he were on the ballot.

3) Wilson was about as racist as they come. Not only did he bring back segregation in the executive branch, his ideas of national self-determination was good enough for Czechs but not for Vietnamese.

It's not just the wealthy or old people. I live in Kansas and the people in Missouri are damn near as "conservative" as my state is. There's also Oklahoma and Nebraska and they border us. Even Colorado is purple. Most of the radical conservatives that I know are under 50. and I know it gets worse as you go south and directly east of us.

What I meant is that the rich people are rich because they did not underestimate the stupidity of the American public. Being that they are in the habit of not underestimating stupid people, and given they are conservative, they apply that lack of underestimation to politics as Republicans.

*This message was not paid for by The Conservancy of Liberal Seriousness*

Hi! Rod Hardbody here and I want to tell you about a candidate who has garnered my support this coming election season. Oh, those fat cats in Washington have many names for him but to you and I, he are Serious Cat. And friends, you don't need me to tell you, this is serious election.

images.cryhavok.org

You know, sometimes people ask me why I'll be voting for a cat in the up-coming elections, and, I can see how someone unfamiliar with the main points of the campaign might be a tad confused with my choice but, for me, it's his stance on the issues.

I mean, he's serious about taxes. He's serious about healthcare. Heck, I even get the sense that he's serious about me, which is amazing really. I'm trying to remember the last time a candidate was really serious about me... Ha! I try not to be too serious about myself so, it's good to know he'll be on the job, you know, handling those serious issues as they arise.

Plus, with this cat, I don't even need to worry about patriotism. Serious Cat has that covered with his big-ass badge that is at least ten times the size of our sitting president's questionable choice in lapel adornment. As an added bonus, mail-in voters will notice that it even has his name on it. That, to me,is a pretty serious demonstration of the cat's intentions.

And, yes, his critics and skeptics are right to point out that, the red, white, and blue of Old Glory on his button do somewhat resemble the flag of the Netherlands but, it is Serious Cat's position that one must always conduct themselves in a serious manner when dealing with the Dutch. (Yes, no matter how funny they might talk.) The fact that The Dutch are keenly aware of this only goes to showcase how poised he is on the inter-national stage. I've even heard some who'd go so far as to say his foreign policy in general is both very serious and also very cat-like. I think we can all agree that these are important qualities to have in a serious candidate today. Qualities that Serious Cat has shown in spayeds.(Sorry)

The fact that there are only ten stars on his piece of flair has also drawn scorn from those other candidates but, seriously? How many do you need?

Oh, and Serious Cat has set his whiskers adrift to all of today's hot-button go-get-em issues, too.

I mean for one, he is SERIOUS about taxes. Now, I'm pretty sure that if there is one thing that all Americans can agree on when it comes to taxes in this day and age: it's that we have got to approach this thing with some seriousness. Who you gonna' call? That's right. You are going to call the most serious cat you know! There's just no other candidate out there today who can claim to be as serious a candidate as Serious Cat. (Frankly, if your candidate isn't Serious Cat then, well, your candidate is kind of illegitimate by definition really. Serious Cat doesn't want to rub your face in it but, the carpet didn't crap itself, ya' know?)

But his far-reaching platform doesn't end there: The cat is SERIOUS about healthcare too!!! No shiat! We got all these other clowns down here blatherin' and carryin' on about healthcare.... Aww shiat, gotta' pay for healthcare... aww shiat, buy your own damn healthcare... Got shiat growin' outta my shiat, could use some gotdamned healthcare... Blah-blah-blah! I mean, not one of these clowns has the answer. Then up steps my man(?) Serious Cat, and bam; bring some seriousness to that situation right quick.

And finally my friends, Serious Cat is... well he's gosh darned serious about YOU! It ain't the little you either. It's the big one. So let's all put our paws together this election festival season and vote for Serious Cat. Because He are Serious Cat. This is serious election.

Lord_Baull: Considering they consistently get 49-51% of the national vote, I'm gonna say, "Pretty f*cking stupid, Gene."

I'd say not.
Consider that out of those citizens who could vote, less than half do in most elections (only 41% for the 2010 general election). This is how republicans gained so many offices that year both national and local.
When more people vote, democrats win (63% in 2008 for example).
Republicans know this, and have put forth their best effort to reduce the voting population as much as possible
Within the total voting population there is a hardcore group of people who always vote, all the time, in all elections, That group is mostly white, mostly male, and mostly conservative, with a fair number calling themselves "christians".

So yes, you have a crunchy stale core of stupid, but unfortunately it's wrapped in a soft mushy coating of laziness. That is what needs to be changed, since there is no altering the minds of that hard core of conservative voters. Remember, this is the same group who elected a slew of republican scumbags who bleated "JOBS! JOBS! JOBS!" for months before november 2010 before unleashing their true goals of rolling american society back 100 years.

If I had voted for any of them I'd be pissed... doubly so if I were a woman.

Democrats lose election because not enough people vote, since there are more people who would vote democrat than would vote republican. If we had the type of voter participation numbers as the country of Malta (95%), it would be impossible for democratic candidates NOT to win elections.

tl;dr - it's not stupid causing so many of these problems as it is laziness. People need to get off their asses and VOTE instead of b*tching and whining about the process and the results.

/have voted in every singe election since 1980

It's tempting to say "oh, they're just stupid" and move on, but it's not that simple. My uncle is basically the Fark stereotype of a rabid conservative. Seriously. It's like having randomjsa at the dinner table on holidays. Moo-chelle's room service lobster spree? Heard all about it. Arugula-gate? Heard all about it. Given enough time he'll eventually spout every one of the Fox News talking points, no matter how ridiculous.

But here's the kicker. He's not dumb. In fact he's quite intelligent. He was head chemist at a Fortune 100 company. As long as the topic isn't politics, we have amazing, insightful conversations. But as soon as the topic turns to politics it's all out the window.

Now if he was making those intelligent, insightful arguments for conservative policies that would be one thing. But he's not. He's "just asking" where the birth certificate is.

The only caucus that didn't go for Santorum was the one that was held weeks after the original caucuses were held because a fight broke out. And Ron Paul won that one.

The cities (STL, KC, and Columbia) are pretty liberal. The suburbs are very conservative as well, especially the ones around KC (where the Jesus Camp kids are from). The county I live in St. Charles is very Conservative as well but some of the suburbs closer to St. Louis are a bit more moderate due to the influence unions have had on St. Louis.

But yeah, the rural areas aren't that much different from it's neighboring states but thankfully places like STL and KC tend to cancel the derp from the more rural regions out in MO.

Something Oklahoma can't say.

This whole thread was bizarrely entertaining from the start(and I read a LOT of threads).
Started off with a divisive, yet humorous opening headline. The expected initial fight scene among the usual suspects was pretty standard fare, but out of nowhere a heartfelt life-choice discussion between GAT_00 and sweetmelissa31 takes center stage. The following romantic sub-plot between sweetmelissa31 and Jackson Herring seemed somewhat out of place in the overall narrative, but you know what? Looking back it really worked for me. Then we had the slow steady buildup to the final fight scene which exploded into the thread with a 3 vs 30 hopeless melee in which no one wins, but the principal players all maintain their honor while fighting to the death for their beliefs.

So it was Crouching Tiger with political twits instead of Chinese warriors.

Really? Why?

After all, he was friggin' elected.

The fact that there were some reasonably sane people in that room doesn't mean that they represent the majority of Americans, sadly. After all, and I really do need to reiterate this, he was friggin' elected.

In terms of politics, he's an idiot. He got stomped by a bunch of little old ladies and gentlemen, folks that had to explain to him that we lost our "USA is Number One In Everything" cachet a long time ago, particularly when it comes to social supports like healthcare. If this had been a pre-election town hall meeting, and he had been publicly dope-slapped like this prior to his election, I'd also feel more hope for this country. But, instead, he was indeed elected, and the overall political I.Q. for that state dropped a few points.

For the last time, "Fark Liberals" means nothing. The joke started with "Fark Independants," who claimed to be independant but were fully in the tank for the Republican Party. Fark liberals, if anything, would indicate people who AREN'T liberals, but who pretend to be on Fark.

I know you're just trollin', but come on.
