After he rescued the woman, Cory Booker went back in for the snakes.

So the neighbor came out about even, then.

Though, you could argue at least the flames might deaden the pain of living in Newark.

Two things...

"His security detail assisted in the rescue." Newark really is that bad, isn't it. Security details are more a mexican border town thing.

Second, it's true that politicians will do anything for a vote.

Well this version is a bit less egregious than usual, so I'd let it stand.

But I still thought "I wonder who set the fi-ire", so I'm a bad person. :)

Most big city Mayors have some sort of a security detail.

If you haven't seen it, watch "Street Fight" - a documentary about his first campaign for Mayor. He seems like a pretty awesome guy.

And cynical assholes will write off literally anything a politician does as "getting a vote." So they can't win in your book, and thus I'm not that surprised they really don't care what you think.

Newark is such a shiathole that I am surprised it doesn't spontaneously combust anywhere the mayor is at any given point in time.

I don't like Corey's politics but he will actually get his hands dirty, especially around reporters.

Normally, if a politician rushed into a burning building to rescue someone, I'd assume it was a reelection ploy.

But Cory Booker really is just that much of a badass. I am so cynical my heart is a just a container of salt harvested from the tears of broken childhood dreams, and I actually believe he did this just because he's a farking wonderful human being.

He'll never be President. We don't deserve him.

Anyone wanna road trip to Newark and start passing out flyers? If he still likes us in four years, we'll probably run at least one state apiece.

My 6th floor apartment (not in Newark) has bars across the windows. The previous owners (renters?) wanted to make sure kids didn't accidentally fall from an open window.

The documentary Brick City focuses heavily on Booker, and he comes off as both brilliant and extremely principled. Here's a guy who grew up wealthy-- his parents were executives at IBM. He went to Stanford and got his B.A. and M.A. He gets a Rhodes scholarship, then goes back for his law degree at Yale. When he graduates, he has one of the best academic pedigrees anyone could hope for.

And what does he do with that? He works in free law clinics for the extremely poor. He moves into one of the worst areas of Newark and becomes a full-time advocate for better living conditions. He spends months living in a motor home, leaving it in the worst parts of the city so he can document why Newark is in such bad shape, and advocate for solutions. Even after he's elected mayor, he walks the streets of Newark, sometimes in the middle of the night, with his team to ask people what is happening in their neighborhood and what they'd like him to do. He holds office hours where people can come in and explain their issues to him-- in a city of over 300,000. And apparently, you know, in his free time, he rescues people from burning buildings.

He's been in Newark since 1998. If it's all just a plan to run for Governor, he's really, really patient. Talk about the long game. And if he runs against Christie, it's be the biggest charisma gap since Nixon vs. Kennedy. Booker is a handsome All-American football star who commands a podium as well as anyone I can think of. Christie looks like he has inflicted himself with Types Two Through Nineteen Diabetes, and sounds winded if you make him talk for more than 30 seconds. Christie was born in Newark. He moved out to the suburbs, got his law degree, and went to work for a private law firm in a wealthy area. You couldn't write a better contrast.

Brick City gets weighed down by segments about a couple of families who come off, frankly, poor as a result of repeated bad decisions. (Spending your weekends with your kids at gang reunions and pointing out that you aren't committing crimes with them any more isn't exactly making a clean break.) But the segments on Booker are extremely compelling.

This. I like Obama and he makes Obama seem like... I don't know, something less than Obama.

He can hold a room of businessmen or locals in his thrall while speaking extemporaneously. He genuinely seems to live what he preaches.

His only problem is his personal life. Not married, might have a long term relationship with this white woman he's been seen with. Might be gay. Won't fly on the national stage.

Frank Lautenberg is a million years old, y'know. I would think it would be an easy call for a blue state like New Jersey to go for somebody who's not a Republican and not a crook.

If that's his worst "issue", I'm OK with him being President as of tomorrow. Doubly so if he answers all questions about his personal life with "None of your got damn business. Anyone else have a question about the issues?"

Yeah, but most people have some sort of brain thingy or other. If the angels tell him to help people, I think we should just let him listen to them.

So he claims. I won't be satisfied until Sheriff Joe and his experts in the Cold Case Posse verify that his long form birth certificate isn't a forgery. WE should probably get Trump on the case too, just to be sure.

As someone who campaigned for Booker in his first (failed) bid for mayor (against Sharpe James, who to this day I still can't figure out why people kept voting for him), I'm getting a kick, etc..

I saw him speak at a conference once and have been following him on twitter since. I'm fairly conservative politically, but I'd vote for him in a heartbeat given the chance. Character trumps politics as far as I'm concerned, and Mayor Booker has it.

He's a Democrat, the people that have a problem with him not being a breeder would never vote for him anyways.

Besides, it would be refreshing as hell if a politician was single and admitted to all the road strange he was getting. "Yes, I had physical relationship with Mrs. X. We're two consenting adults, we made a connection and enjoyed each other company." Again the only people who would have a problem with that is the people who would never vote for him.

Your post made me read his wiki article. To call his story "extremely compelling" is a vast understatement. It doesn't even sound like he could be a actual person. If you tried to base a character off of him in a movie, you'd have to tone it down so it could seem real.

I can't say this enough. I love the guy.

But the democratic party is a huge diverse tent. And to win you still need independents.

He doesn't come off as gay, but I can't tell half the time, and you can be sure they'll be playing his awesome defense of marriage equality as some sort of "proof."

Plus given the shiat Obama has had to put up with, can you imagine if Booker was banging a white lady? Heads might literally explode.
