Women and children fir...ah, screw it

They really should have vetted the new Republican Party slogan before they released it.

Hey, women say they want equality, then they can damn well run for it.

I can understand prioritizing children, because they're young and haven't experienced the world. Ideally you want them to pull through to live another day.

But women? Why would they be any different to men?

Granted, if my woman was on board, I would give her everything I could to make sure she survived. But just some random lady? No way.

I agree about the kids first thing, especially since they take up less space allowing more to be saved. After kids, I would say young parents, regardless of gender. Then, adults in a roughly younger-to-older fashion.

I hadn't explicitly thought about it before, but it doesn't surprise me that in the chaos of a real disaster people wouldn't abide by the women and children first thing. For those who don't, survivor's guilt is actually deserved.

Women are useless in a catastrophe. Can't forage. Can't hike. Can't make camp. Can't row a boat. Can't navigate worth a damn. Can't hunt. Can't shut the fark up for one minute and let the men think.

They just attract sharks.

Women should be considered equal adults, and be in line along with men, after children.

Children should go first because they are innocents who haven't had the chance to grow up to be like all the other assholes you and I hate.

Plus, putting them all in one of the first lifeboats together would be lulz-worthy as they struggle to control the boat, argue about who should do what, and inevitably collapse into cannibalistic Lord-of-the-Flies-style in-fighting.

I am shocked that in a disaster everyone is out for themselves. It's almost like asking people to be calm and exit a burning building in single file.

There's also this little gem...

They also point out that in more recent disasters people show altruism to more vulnerable people generally, such as those with disabilities.

"Please, good 76 year-old sir with diabetes who does not have his insulin and will probably die anyway before being rescued, take my young, healthy place."

Reminds me of the BSG miniseries, when Boomer and Helo rescue a few people from Caprica. Your ENTIRE SPECIES is on the verge of extinction (as the President continually reminded us) and your top priority is to evacuate Methuselah's grandma?

"I can understand prioritizing children, because they're young and haven't experienced the world." it's morally right.

Keep it simple. Why do Farkers have to long-windedly have to rationalize everything? It's funny when you have someone like Capt. Sully be applauded for being a man's man by Farkers but then on the other side you read Farkers saying in an emergency it's every woman for themselves.

I hear their menstruation attracts bears. The last thing people on a life boat need is to be attacked by bears.

Emergencies are characterised by panic, confusion and stampeding. You don't prepare for an emergency by having polite social compacts. You prepare for them with proper rehearsals; staff who are trained to evacuate passengers; proper signage and directions; safe, clear and intuitive exits; and systems that immediately alert people from outside who can respond appropriately.

Oh, but "captain is last off" is still a bloody good rule.

A counter argument could be made that society has less invested in the education and life experience of children, therefore young adults are more valued.

/not making that argument

skinink: I can understand prioritizing children, because it's morally right.

Is it?

Maybe intentionally holding the kids back and seeing which ones make their own way to survive would cull the population of inferior DNA, one day leading to a superior human species able to weather any storm, up to an including the death of Sol and the end of the Milky Way.

Of course, those guys would be dicks, but hey they'd be live dicks.

Morals are relative. For instance, I find it perfectly acceptable to save myself first over anyone else. You can biatch at me all you like before you succumb to the smoke.

If you aren't fit enough to push/shove/punch your way onto the lifeboats, maybe you weren't meant to survive.

Quite a few of the feminist writers during the Titanic craze actually did. I'm kicking myself for not remembering the author of the quote, "We can work like men, and we can die like men!" In protest of the "women first" rule for the lifeboats.

In our new, enlightened age, I wouldn't want to cross some PC line and offend a woman by offering her a seat on the lifeboat first. So I would take it just to show my support for gender equality. Hey, you're welcome.

Self interest is instinctual.

Clearly the best solution is to prioritize based on BMI. The obese, smokers, sickly, and the weak will have to be culled. The healthy will be encouraged to make for the nearest island and started conceiving rapidly so as to build a new civilization. A council based on visibility of Abs shall be established to act as a governing body.

During an evacuation, I'd think that having one group congregate while selectively letting others through would cause an even smaller number of survivors overall.
