jimmy buffet can't sing, can't write, and can't play guitar. yet he is a multimillionaire because people pay him to do those three things. it beggars belief.

Jazz Fest is barely about actual jazz, and has been so for decades.

It's more of a big music festival than anything.

To quote Arlo Guthrie: "Well, that's America".

/I wouldn't go insofar as to categorize myself as a Parrothead, but I enjoy Mr Buffet from time to time.

I'd like it if the people who now identify basic activities like "being at the beach" with established brands because of marketing efforts would shoot themselves in the farking face. But we can't always get what we want.

Note to FlashHarry: Just for kicks contemplate this. If you are saying something is wrong with so many people having a different opinion than you...just maybe it would be better to find out why. My guess (or opinion in this case) is you have never really listened to him. Could be you only have heard his Margaritaville or Cheeseburger song. If that is the case you are missing a lot of good lyrics and music. Of course you may choose to just keep your opinion. Either way as you say he has millions and most likely will not be affected by your opinion but you will be missing something that makes a lot of people feel good. Enjoy your Buffettless existence. It is Buffett by the way.

I went to my first "Margaritaville" in the Montego Bay airport just last week.

It was pretty much the epitome of why I hate American "travelers". That being said, the burgers weren't half bad.

Subby, Jimmy Buffett got his start busking in NOLA. He was even the subject of last year's collectable Jazz Fest poster. That's kind of a big deal, if you're into such things.

This story is outrageous! Buffett is replacing noted Jazz Icon Eddie Vedder. Talk about a mismatch when it comes to Jazz.

the moral of the story: don't expect to be a multimillionaire just because you can sing, write, and play guitar, because you may be missing the most important element, which you can't learn to do and is hard to define.

Don't make the mistake of assuming that everyone who like Jimmy is only a fan because of a marketing effort. When it comes to care free beach sitting day drinking awesome times (yeah I just raped english) Buffett is hard to beat.

Having worked at a bar for many years whose owner was a die-hard parrothead, whose dog was named "Buffett," would play hours of his music every night, and had a band every week who would play Margaritaville a few times per gig, I now have a Pavlovian response to his voice. Yes, the kind with drooling and barking.

I came here thinking this had something to do with Peter Buffett, son of Warren. He IS a jazz musician.

I'm O.K. with this. I like a lot of early Buffett.
Jazz Fest is actually Jazz and Heritage Fest. The Heritage part includes everything from R&B, cajun, zydeco, hip hop, bluegrass, rock and/or roll, etc.
I suggest to subby that you avoid this festival. It's already too crowded every year. I hope it rains- scares away the liters.

The problem comes when you live at the beach and are so sick of most Buffet music you could scream. Particularly when you play music, lots of it and well, but that's all the tourists want to hear. That's when you want to shoot them in the farking face. Seriously, people, expand your farking horizons a bit.

Good luck with that. I avoid it like the plague (and I live in NOLA). Better festival, with equally as good food: French Quarter Festival. Starts today. And best of all... its free.

In the grand scheme of things I can respect a guy who sells a lifestyle he's willing to live. He doesn't take the whole thing seriously; refers to it as a Summer job that kept on going. He is by no means the best at anything; there are better songwriters, better players, better writers.....but he had the sense to put it all together and the tenacity to realize if he could keep doing it he could sell the hell out of it.

...and sell the hell out of it he has.

With all due respect to Mr Buffett and Mr Robinette (the creator of the Buffett poster), that particular poster is generally regarded as somewhat less than collectable.

I had a buddy who was a parrot head, and like another poster said, early Buffet is incredibly composed and well written, some heavy duty real country songs. Unfortunately, you only ever heare the greatest hits tracks in bars.

Buffet is from Mobile Alabama, and spent his summers in New Orleans as a kid, and even played Preservation Hall as a young man. Buffet is more fitting at the festival than most.

Buffet's version of Stars Fell on Alabama is an amazing version of the old standard.

So who said to compromise anything. But to change your opinion because you have more data or just now "get it" is no crime or sell out. Plus if you just want to swim down stream because the herd is swimming up stream there is always the chance there is either a Crock or a waterfall downstream. The best option is to get a better perspective and the whole picture before deciding to go rogue or join in the fun. My comment was no more than that. Get all the data if you are going to offer a opinion otherwise it's not worth the ink or breath it takes to communicate it. Maybe he did. But Buffett is fun and warm evenings and partying and just plane feeling good. If you have something about those things that makes you mad or bad so be it, you'll never like Buffett. Just don't listen to his hits and think you know Buffett. He is very talented. I like his music. As for the circus, parrotheads and Finpeople they can have it. I went to a few concerts and they were fun but after a few I was done. I will never stop listening to A1A or Coconut Telegraph. It also helps to have lived in the Keys in the late 60's early 70's.

Plus, if he's doing an acoustic show, he'll probably do a lot of older stuff. Saw him many years ago on a tour with just him and his guitar, it was great.

Jimmy Buffett is an American Icon. I think a lot of people are just jealous because he still makes huge $$$ touring while more modern acts can't sell out a cheap nightclub

Exactly. Like The Dead, his fans are annoying. But he's cool. Not a big fan, but some of his songs aren't half bad.

I saw a show like that. He rolled out a lotto machine with a song title on each ping pong ball. He'd pull one, read it , then play that song. Fun.

Did he steal that idea from Elvis Costello or vice versa?

Other jazz luminaries appearing include:

Bruce Springsteen, Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Foo Fighters, The Beach Boys, Zac Brown Band, Ne-Yo, My Morning Jacket, Bon Iver, Cee Lo Green, Florence + the Machine, Feist, Bunny Wailer, Bonnie Raitt, Maze, Steve Earle, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Ani DiFranco, Better Than Ezra.

So... um.... yeah.

The jazz festival in Iowa City has went downhill a bit over the years. But at least it's still predominantly jazz. The Heath Brothers will be there this year, so that's good.

A thread about Jazz and NOLA?

Galactic - Ash Wednesday Sunrise (new window)

check out Late for the Future and Crazyhorse Mongoose as well. lotsa good stuff, and the newer stuff is pretty dagn good too, changed it up a bit since Houseman left, but Stanton Moore still puts it down. You just might dig it.

Jimmy Buffett's most popular and most played songs are mediocre. Unfortunately, his best songs are rarely, if ever, played in public. That is the real tragedy.
