Doogles4221: I am proud to say I voted to Frankin, and will be happy to do it again in 2016.

If there were more politicians like him, you guys might actually be able to get something done.

"This isn't 'Saturday Night Live,' Al," Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had to remind the freshman senator after Franken made faces while McConnell spoke during the Supreme Court nomination process for Elena Kagan.

LOL.

Like he doesn't?

Ditto.

Eddie Adams from Torrance: Vice President Joe Biden described former Saturday Night Live comedian Harvard Political Science Graduate (cum laude), Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. as a "leading legal scholar," presumably in the Senate, today.

I love that the Republicans want to point to the fact that Franken was an incredibly successful comedian and comedy writer as some sort of proof that he's not also one of the smartest motherfarkers in the Senate.

Being smart does not make one a leading legal scholar. Seriously, are liberals this dumb?

Perhaps the one that let Oily Taits have a law license?

C'mon now, you just aren't trying. You need to reboot your reality so it's compatible with the latest release of GOPREALITY 5.7

You'll know it's working when you believe that Al Franken and Joe Biden are mouth-breathing idiots, and that Obama is a cluelss community organizer, whose Harvard law Degree is meaningless because he only got it because he was black.

As a secondary check, you should now believe that Sarah Palin is a strong, intelligent woman who strikes fear in the hearts of libs, which is why they had Katie Kouric ambush her with all those unfair questions, and that Michele Bachmann, Alan West, and Herman Cain are serious, thoughful intellectuals who are the leading lights of their party and geopoltical geniuses

There, now that didn't hurt a bit, now did it?

That would be my current home state of VA. You can sit for the bar either after earning a law degree from an ABA accredited school OR if you are certified to have "Read the law " under a qualified supervising attorney (new window)

Once upon a itme that was the only way to become a lawyer, apprentice yourself to an existing lawyer or judge and have them sponsor you for membership in the bar when they felt you'd sufficently "read the law". Then in late 1800's early 1900's standardized bar exam came into being and forr a while there was a hybrid system where you went to law school for two years learning black-letter basic law and then spent a year interning with a lawyer or judge "reading the law"

No that would be CA one of the only states in the union to allow you to sit for the bar without having gone to an ABA accredited law school (going to an unaccredited law school is only a slightly less wasteful use of your money than putting it in a pile and lighting it on fire). Thus A) it has one fo the hardest bar exams in the country and B) all the biggest nuts and wack-a-loons in the profession (and that it really saying something) tend to be members of the CA bar

You need a pretty big city before the public library has a good selection of law texts. It would probably take three bucks worth from the local law school library... though the amount of material available via Google might be enough to get you "law scholar".

Everybody who graduates from Harvard gets the honors. Even after the 'grade inflation scandal'.

It's a chicken-and-the-egg kind of problem. Harvard gets to pick from the highest achieving and most driven applicants, and most of them become high achieving and driven students.

//It's a good thing it's plural, as a single honor sounds like the English for 'louse'
///And who'd want a lousy degree?

Which is still not sufficient to qualify one to sit for the bar exam. He's a smart guy. So is my gastroenterologist. He's had some success as a writer, but has he had anything published in any recognized legal journals or reviews?

That's farking awesome. I'd like to see Presidential candidates even writing the names of States on a large map. Would be an awesome debate question in a debate. "Governor Romney and Mr. President, please fill in as many state names as possible in 10 minutes on the large map next to you."

No. I disagree that he's some sort of a legal scholar. But he's still a bright f*cking guy. I mean, with a degree in poli sci from Harvard, he's more qualified than most people in Congress. I dislike seeing him being dismissed as a mere "comedian".

But, no...he's not a legal scholar. Biden's an idiot. That's pretty well established.

Very true. And being a leading legal scholar from the right just means you're versed in the Bible.

//i'll take the intelligent but questionably-versed Mr. Franken, please

I love that every conservative media outlet has run the story with just the fragment of a quote. No one seems to have access to this "pool report", or cares to post it in any event. I'd love ti know the context of the remark. But in any event Franken is a clearly sharp guy who takes this very seriously, and I could easily believe that compared to the rest of the Senators, he is something of a leading scholar.

A specialist in a particular branch of study, according to Merriam-Webster. Is he? So a "leading scholar" would be someone who knows more than most. Does he?

Could you imagine the cognitive dissonance when the GOP screeches about how he's nothing more than an actor? The mental gymnastics and talking points would make the last 4 years look like level-headed discourse.

The only former SNL cast member I could get behind would be Bill Murray. Or maybe, Garrett Morris.

Poe's Law, sarcasm, trolling, whichever.

Anyway, the questions are serious. For all I know, the man gets home and spends all his time reading law books. I don't know enough about the man to know if he's a specialist in the study of law or, if he is, if he knows more than most other people.

I've agreed with several of the things he's done during his time in congress, but I also thought his support of SOPA was completely misguided. That's about as much skin as I have in this game.
