(Washington Examiner)   In a scathing commentary on what's wrong with the American government, Joe Biden calls Senator and former comedian Al Franken a 'leading legal scholar'. Wait, he was being serious?   (campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com) divider line 128

I'll bet a week's pay that Al Franken has one of the highest IQs in Washington. Bet he can write a funnier headline too.

Yeah but it would still get redlit.

Hey, Subby? I know you can't stand Franken, but if you can get past his sometimes... ponderous elocution, he's actually quite intelligent.

Vice President Joe Biden described former Saturday Night Live comedian Harvard Political Science Graduate (cum laude), Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. as a "leading legal scholar," presumably in the Senate, today.

I love that the Republicans want to point to the fact that Franken was an incredibly successful comedian and comedy writer as some sort of proof that he's not also one of the smartest motherfarkers in the Senate.

Franken is one of my favorite senators based solely on his intelligence. And I don't even agree with him all the time - I just appreciate that he's not a retard, and this is a trait I'd like to encourage in our governing bodies.

-1 for you submitter.
1) If Franken was a tard, you still wouldn't have a point.
2) If Biden was ignorant, you still wouldn't have a point.

I agree--I love Franken (except for the SOPA BS), but 'scholar' necessitates study. Franken has a bachelor's in poli. sci. He's a lawmaker but I don't think experience or a career can turn you into a 'legal scholar'. You need a law degree at minimum. Biden is suggesting that Franken somehow mastered the field of law without an education.

Franken is a good senator without that ridiculous moniker.

It was fun a few months ago when I was watching Trading Places with a group of people mostly in their 20s and had to explain to them that one of the goofy baggage handlers was being played by the right honorable senator from Minnesota.

To be fair, "law schools" are a relatively recent event. Previous to relatively recently in our country's history, lawyers often got their training through internships.

Not to denigrate formal learning at the post-secondary level, but it's quite possible to stand with scholars on a topic without actually having formal learning in the discipline.

Could you imagine the cognitive dissonance when the GOP screeches about how he's nothing more than an actor? The mental gymnastics and talking points would make the last 4 years look like level-headed discourse.

The only former SNL cast member I could get behind would be Bill Murray. Or maybe, Garrett Morris.

Harvard Law was established in 1817, and Marshall-Wythe was established in 1779. Did you perhaps mean "previous to our country"?

... lawyers often got their training through internships.

But that's true. Still is, too. A fresh graduate, particularly from a full-time day school with no work experience, is certainly not ready to represent clients. It's just that now, "internships" are highly-paid "junior associates".

For those who do not want to read the article, here's a summary:

Joe Biden called Al Franken a "leading legal scholar"
Al Franken was on SNL
Mitch McConnell had to remind Al Franken Congress is not SNL during Elena Kagan's confirmation
Elena Kagan is on the Supreme Court defending ObamaCare
ObamaCare is unconstitutional.

Yep, Joe Biden making a comment about Al Franken naturally leads us to how bad ObamaCare is. People actually read this website. People like subby.

You need a pretty big city before the public library has a good selection of law texts. It would probably take three bucks worth from the local law school library... though the amount of material available via Google might be enough to get you "law scholar".

being smart doesn't make one a "legal scholar", much less a "leading" one, however. I think Inigo Montoya needs to pay ol Firebird Joe a visit

Very true. And being a leading legal scholar from the right just means you're versed in the Bible.

//i'll take the intelligent but questionably-versed Mr. Franken, please

My point is that you could be a lawyer in most of the US until relatively recently without ever going to law school by serving an apprenticeship for some longish period of time. I think there's still one state where that's marginally possible.

It's sad that most people only know who he is because of the SOPA thing because it's probably one of the only things he's supported that is questionable because he really is a great politician otherwise. We need more politicians like him.
