Are you planning to take a steaming dump on every single thread this morning?

As I've said in other threads, I still think people are not recalling Reagan's legacy clearly. The man was pretty conservative. I think he'd be liked just fine by the current crop of GOP's.

I am in awe of that man's ability to troll. I almost want to watch Faux News to see their heads assplode.

That's really not accurate. Reagan was quite conservative, but under his administration the national debt grew and taxes were raised, among other things. Most small-government Republicans would be fine with Reagan, and that's why they venerate him. But big-government "conservative" theocrats like Santorum and the voting evangelical base? They would despise the man, and they don't even realize it.

Perfect examples of why America can't have nice things, and continually finds novel ways to fark up even the most simple concepts. Calling these rubes low-information voters is too generous.

How dare you suggest that members of the Tea Party might be motivated by racial thoughts as opposed to a complete love of their country!

He definitely was, but Reagan would have slapped down Grover Norquist like the little dictator-wannabe that he is.

Reagan was once asked why he left the Democratic Party and famously responded, "I didn't leave the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party left me." And the Republican Party has followed the Democratic Party's lead. They pay lip service to him, like a mascot, but what they are propping up is more of a myth of Reagan, a version of Reagan that is removed from the reality of what he really was and really did. The Republicans recall a time of perceived great success (even though the Democrats firmly controlled Congress during the Reagan Era), without really looking deeply into what the tangibles of his presidency.

Ronald Reagan (Peace Be Upon Him)

2012-04-12 12:41:32 PM
I listened to a half-hour interview with Reagan's chief economic adviser last year on NPR. He outright said that he has no idea where the modern GOP got most of their views about Reagan, and that most of them couldn't be further from the truth. One example he gave was the latest "Reagan never raised taxes" talking point. According to his adviser during this interview, Reagan raised taxes 13 times, and he should know because he made a point of stating that he not only was he heavily involved in writing these documents, but also signed right next to Reagan.

No wonder the GOP wants to get rid of NPR. Nothing will mess up your whargarbl like a full-length, unedited interview, from a key person close to a historic figure, who has no reason to lie about what that person did or said.

2012-04-12 12:58:42 PM
Nowadays, conservative commentators like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh often invoke the former president as a champion of the conservative agenda. Sean Hannity of Fox News even has a regular segment called "What Would Reagan Do?"

Simpson, however, sees a different person in the president he called a "dear friend."

Reagan "knew that it was not right for people to be abused," Simpson says. "Anybody who's here illegally is going to be abused in some way, either financially [or] physically. They have no rights."

Peter Robinson, a former Reagan speechwriter, agrees. "It was in Ronald Reagan's bones - it was part of his understanding of America - that the country was fundamentally open to those who wanted to join us here."

Reagan said as much himself in a televised debate with Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale in 1984.

"I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though sometime back they may have entered illegally," he said.

He's right, even though Reagan made a deal with the devil by allowing the religious right to gain increasing sway in the party he would still shiat puppies watching the shambles they've devolved into and likewise the modern GOP if Reagan were to be magically reincarnated into a guy eligible to run for office would find him unelectable because he would fail to pass several purity tests including overturning Roe v. Wade, Personhood laws, and that insane Grover Norquist pledge.

Ever watch Norquist try to ret-con Reagan's multiple tax increases?

It's like watching a Reed Richards impersonation.

RINO!!!!!

JK. You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. But this needs to be drilled into every right-wing Tea Party supporting Republican's head until they've realized how insane their movement has become.

Weird stuff.

That's another myth.

Republicans controlled the Senate for six of the eight years Reagan was President, not to mention the number of Boll Weevil Dems who voted in the House with their GOP counterparts.

Not weird, bloody hilarious and depressing.

He went through all the effort to write it, then sign it when it was passed. If he "meant" it does that mean he would have put the bill on scented paper, or signed it in all caps? Maybe he would have added "No seriously, I MEAN this" after his signature.

"We in the United States, above all, must remember that lesson [of the Holocaust], for we were founded as a nation of openness to people of all beliefs. And so we must remain. Our very unity has been strengthened by our pluralism. We establish no religion in this country, we command no worship, we mandate no belief, nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate. All are free to believe or not believe, all are free to practice a faith or not, and those who believe are free, and should be free, to speak of and act on their belief."

Clearly the man was a RINO.

I don't suppose that was Bruce Bartlett? He's been quite actively lately speaking out against Republican economic derp. Wasn't technically the "chief economic adviser" but he definitely had a big role in Reagan's policies.

Not anymore.

The instant you desire to watch a movie on Netflix Instant, their patented psychic interpeter delists it from the database and your queue so you can conveniently watch a straight to video sequel or some crappy old TV show. Why? Because fark you, that's why.

And he's been branded a Marxist by the Republican Party for heresy. Kinda proves the point that Reagan is way on the left-hand side of the political spectrum in "Thar be Dragons" territory.
