I was quite surprised by how superstitious even well-educated Indians are when I was working there last year. One of the software engineers I was working with changed his name based on the advice of a numerologist and another consulted a different one to see whether their upcoming marriage would be auspicious. Big on horoscopes too. Their fatalism definitely shows on the roads.

It would have been poor manners to ask if they really were farking morons, so I contented myself with eating beef every day in my hotel.

Thing is, not EVERYTHING is about 'cheapest'. Lots is, but not everything. As such, in order to justify the higher US labor costs, we have to be 'more efficient'. This means things like higher productivity or being able to effectively do things they can't.

Both of which tend to be enabled by higher levels of education. But it can be hard - you need superior education, and India has made large gains while we've stagnated. Other realms include infrastructure and access to raw materials. Which, again, India(and China) has made large strides in.

Oh, and on the OP: I've seen enough news of this sort to believe that the whole world is superstitious as heck.

The amazing thing about India and its billion+ people in that relatively small country...they produce some of the world's smartest people, yet they still have some of the world's dumbest tribal-type groups. I can understand these mythological-fearing people still existing in various places in Africa, but you'd think knowledge would be more pervasive in India.
