Mitt: "Let me get back to you"

Press Release: "Although Mitt Romney doesn't actually own any albums, he enjoys much of Perl Jam's music."

Q: "Does Romney support the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which makes it easier for women to sue over pay discrimination and was Obama's first signed law?"

Aide: "We'll get back to you on that."

Press Release (Next Day): "Although Mitt Romney doesn't own an iPod, he feels Apple's use of FairPlay is an acceptable use and of value to the market and shareholders, many of which are his friends."

red5ish: So, did they ever get back with an answer?

They'll probably do what they normally do when they get put up against something like this:

"We think that this is a state's rights issue, not a federally mandated one."

2012-04-12 02:45:07 PM

Sir Vanderhoot: "Of course Mr. Romney supports women's rights to equal compensation for the hard work that they do. Unfortunately, though, a good idea does not always make a good law, and many excellent ideals have been twisted into poorly thought-out laws in the past. I haven't looked at the wording on this particular bill, so I don't think I could say if it should be passed as law. The devil is often in the details, and I'm not one to throw my weight behind something I don't fully know the consequences of."

Bam. Plausible deniability without working yourself into a corner, and you still care about women's feelings. Any competant worker should have been able to come up with an appropriate non-answer that still sounds good to both sides.

The law was signed on January 20, 2008. If Romney is so concerned about women's employment, could he have bothered to learn about that important law in the intervening few years?

More importantly, that statement would apply to ANYTHING. Romney wouldn't be willing to throw his weight behind ANYTHING because you can't fully know the consequences of any law or policy.

Oh, I see - Mitt Romney stands for absolutely nothing. So, I guess that works just fine.

That's because their campaign is about nothing but "we have to get Obama out of office."

Borg tractors will repel it.

And as for why no slugthrowers (regular guns, like we think of them) - they are not good to use in enclosed, space environments. The gasses are poisonous in closed systems like a starship. Also, if the Borg are on your ship and oyu need short-range weapons, you're all ready well past losing, generally.

Romney hasn't shown any ability to learn from mistakes. Poor AI.

What's better is that they haven't even learned to keep focus on one issue. After that "92% jobs lost" stat hit the air, just about everyone from Politifact on down was proving it wrong. Instead of accepting the correction and moving on, the Romneyborgs were diverting time and effort AND keeping their stupidity alive and in the air by demanding a public retraction. It's like they haven't realized the best way to avoid looking bad is to let time bury the mistakes.

No, they're not Borg. They're more like the Binars.

/Soz dude, didn't make the cut this season.

I do, however, retain the right to engage trolls who bring fresh derp that I deem "credible" in the sense that it might be able to sway low-info voters in the general and thus needs to be countered as simply and effectively as possible. Trolls who just bring out the same old false equivalency arguments, false absolutist statements, ad hominem attacks and long debunked talking points are an utter waste of bandwidth who are rightfully ignored. If a righty here on Fark is gonna try to attack the left's position with a crayon at least let it be a unbroken one. The fresh derp trolls cannot be reasoned out of their positions, of course, but in essence what you are doing with them is talking over their heads to anyone who might be reading along and actually buy into their sins of omission, misstatements, embellishments and outright fabrications. I Iike to think of them as being like a faithful old hunt who seeks out the latest talking points from derp central and then deliver them here at Fark at our feet like a dead rat covered in drool expecting praise for their actions. Sure they end up get beaten over the nose with a rolled up copy of their derpy posts filled with corrections as a rule but it doesn't appear to deter them much. And ultimately this beats going out and looking for the crap oneself.

Saves time, doncha see?

He could, but he's not going to. He's not going to need to, and it's not to his advantage to further alienate moderate Republicans. Smart money is to smother him with kindness.

Obama could win this thing without ever releasing a negative ad.

I was thinking that. Maybe the Democrats could run a series of ads featuring telegenic people from Massachusetts who would have died without Romneycare. They could thank the Republican nominee for the reforms that saved their lives by making it possible to get the care they needed and also for being the inspiration for Obama's Affordable Care Act.

No, it's a matter antimatter reaction.

Yes, I know too much about Star Trek tech.

I bought this game (new window) thinking it was something else, turned out to be a Star Trek engineer simulator that only had a paper cut out running missions based on the load out and specs of your ship.

Lucky LaRue: Also on the first day of the general elections, the first hyperbolic article on the subject was published by TPM.

Yes exactly...

Except for the fact that its not hyperbole - the Republicans are on record with these policies. Possibly Romney has not supported them but he didn't speak out against them either. There's no undoing it now.

2012-04-12 08:22:02 PM

palelizard: Makh: Seriously? Those were the candidates they had? Most of them only sound sane when they keep their mouths shut. The rest cannot even do that to look sane. They peg simple basic questions as gotcha questions, alienate large groups of people and they cannot even take the time to make sense of what they say into something coherent.

The most legitimate criticisms the Right could come up with run along the lines of "You aren't fixing problems fast enough". Obama's been proven strong on foreign policy, the usual Dem weak point, and the healthcare issue has been out of the news long enough it would be hard to dredge back up, particularly without the base screaming "Socialism!".

Obama, as an incumbent at the beginning of the primaries, appeared to be (whether one believes he is or not) a moderate President, with a couple of decent victories to tout and no serious screw-ups. With the incumbent advantage and Obama's known campaigning ability, that's a pretty tough situation to overcome.

Most of the GOP heavy-hitters and non-crazies sat this one out, knowing losing to Obama in 2012 would kill any 2016 chances, when a serious competitor would have a significantly better chance at victory. They let the far right drag out the crazies and put them on parade, which made the season wacky and entertaining, but most of the shenanigans will be forgotten by 2015.

Who are these GOP heavy-hitters and non-crazies? I'm not snarking you, it's a serious question.

MithrandirBooga: Walker: Republicans: "Democrats are waging a war on women because of...well......jobs. Yeah jobs."

It's clearly working. This morning my facebook exploded with a half dozen people screaming about how the "Democrat war on women" is evil and must be stopped. People whom have never uttered this phrase before are suddenly acting like it was well-known and has been ongoing for years.

I tell you, I am duly impressed with the efficiency that the Republicans are able to roll out their marching orders and have people believe in utter nonsense. It takes mere hours, and people already believe that there's always been a Democratic war on women, and that 99% of all layoffs were women.

I dropped a few fact-check links on those threads, but I'm expecting a derpstorm of "LIEBERAL LAMESTREAM MSM MEDIA" comments in return.

But they're not the people he is targeting. Those types will vote for him / against Obama regardless. He now has to try and win over thinking people.

You're making the mistake of thinking Republicans actually want it fixed.

They will pretend they care to score political points but things said during the the primaries have shown that they hate women, poor people, socialists, thinking people, do-gooders, gays, scientists, the type of Christian that actually follows Christ and too many others to count - the list is long but distinguished.

And they want all of these people marginalized as much as possible.

No - photons have shielding to prevent them from being tractored. But it uses a ton of power on large ships. A photon is nothing but a triggering device and propoltion, so it can afford the energy. A ship with Life Support and gravity things is more challenging. It could work in theory, but the size alone makes it a challenge. Plus, I think the federation would not want to make kamikazi shuttles (they actually made jokes about this during DS9 - how many shuttlecraft they lost)
