Actually, first off, that late 20s / early 30s thing is balderdash. We don't know how long people lived in pre-history, because there are no historical records from pre-history (that being, y'know, what the word means, like, y'know, duh!). We do have a few skeletons that we can determine the approximate age of death of, and of those that lived to die of "old age," they were considerably older than that (70s or so).

Secondly, it's balderdash for another reason: when it's said that people in the Middle Ages only lived to their thirties or so, that was referring to average lifespan. That takes into account deaths from all causes, including, but not limited to: accidents, violence (including warfare), poor sanitation, infant mortality, infectious diseases (smallpox, TB, etc.), famines, etc., and those things tended to kill people who were nowhere near dying of "old age." That tends to skew the average lifespan downward considerably, and few of those have much to do with diet.

The properly relevant statistic is the nominal lifespan, the age that people lived to who died of "old age"! That has not increased anywhere near so dramatically.

The rationale behind the paleo diet is that it's the diet that our bodies evolved and were naturally selected to handle. The Neolithic Revolution only happened a few millennia ago, not even remotely enough time for our species to have evolved a whole new digestive system optimized for grains, let alone processed foods, etc.

I'm not a paleo fanatic (ah loves mah junk foods), but its rationale is nowhere near as "bizarre" as you made it out to be.
