Absolutely not. It's far too dangerous. Not even football-level protective gear is enough to ensure the safety of our would-be professional Ultimate Frisbee players. Think of the frisbee-ers. Don't allow professional Ultimate Frisbee.

I think a modified Guts game would be more suited to current audiences. Heavy discs with sharpened edges and catchers have armored gloves. It would be bloody but popular.

A guy I work with has a separated shoulder from Ultimate Frisbee.

Not from the "sport" but because he's such a whiny, yapping little biatch that he got dropped by another player.

Only if it's played the way we played in college - after every goal, by either team, everyone has to drink a beer.

(to this day, I can't remember how any of those games ended.)

Marijuana and Frisbees don't mix. In between the time someone has thrown the Frisbee to you and it actually reaches you, you've already zoned out and forgotten what you're doing. Then you end up catching a Frisbee with your face.

Ultimate Frisbee would automatically be more watchable than soccer. And it would be great because more people would play it and it's a way more fun game to play.

Is this the minor leagues for that disc golf crap?

2012-04-12 12:01:47 PM
no...but why not give it a try? and if it's really just $2500 for a "franchise" maybe we should get a fark.com sports tab fundraiser going and become joint owners of a professional sports team. don't lie you always wanted to own a sports team. and i think it goes without saying that given wisdom observed daily on this tab we would make the greatest ownership group of all time. OF. ALL. TIME. a model franchise it you will.

The Philly team has cheerleaders.

As a business venture, this I don't think this is going to work at all. AFAIK they aren't even selling beer at the games. And it's beer, not pot, that Ultimate no function well without.

Solty Dog: Is this the minor leagues for that disc golf crap?

No, disc golf and Ultimate Frisbee have about as much to do with each other as football and soccer. Tangentially related, but not at all the same game.

/love disc gold, never played Ultimate, but I do have a friend who is PDGA and has ranked nationally in Ultimate
//it's a great reason for a walk in the park
///and a lot cheaper to get into than ball golf

Stoned or not, ultimate frisbee is fun as hell. Plus, it's easy to get girls into the game, so that's cool too.

I'm all for this. I straight up loves me some Ultimate.

On kind of a related note. Here in Columbus, the OSU Rugby team has lost it's field to the Quidditch (sp?) club. I guess the Rugby team has been practicing on the field for so many years at a certain time that it's just been assumed that the field belonged to them. Quidditch Club applied for that practice slot and now the Rugby team is SOL.

I guess there is a OSU Rugby Twitter feed that has been pure comedy gold over the last week or so...

Good for them. I'd probably go watch. I enjoyed it the one time I played Ultimate. I love disc golf, or just playing catch with a Frisbee. Dream of a day when disc sports are taken seriously.

Hah, we were talking about this league at Ultimate last week. Some of the guys are going down to see the Detroit game in a week or two. A league could work, but they need to start out smaller, more local, cause they won't be making enough money to cover travel costs.

It's hellishly fun to watch, even more fun to play.

I know you're joking, but my brother played competitive travel hockey for years without serious injury, and then wound up with a badly herniated disk in his back from playing parks and rec league Ultimate.

Oh, and CSB, my dad's college buddy from his college frisbee club (yes, this was the late '60s/early '70s) is one of the people who invented Ultimate. Dude managed to turn his frisbee hobby into a successful career at Wham-O and then Mattel.

Most of you haters wouldn't be able to last 15 minutes on the field. Ultimate has the pace of a hockey game but is played in an area with the same perimeter as a football field. The only difference is the end zones are 20 yards deep instead of 10. Unless you suffer an injury, you can only substitute between points or, under the new AUDL rules, during timeouts. That being said, I wouldn't expect anything less from Fark for the comments above. Though, I'm upset no one has asked if this is the sport with the dog.

If you pinch it, you'd lose power and control -- and you'd probably have a hard time faking a throw. The one thing you could do from a forehand position is to fling it from that upside-down hold that some people experiment with when they're just tossing around, which would at least have some power but is still difficult to control.

My girlfriend plays Ultimate Frisbee and after having been to some tournaments it is amazing how different the mens and womens games are in terms of culture.

The sportsmanship in in women's ultimate is almost sickening! If someone falls down or gets run into there is almost an instant "are you okay!??" by the opponent. After the game each teach usually serenades each other with songs that have ultimate frisbee words thrown in.

On the mens side, everyone is just drunk and belligerent.

I used to tear it up in some Ultimate, then the asthma got to be too much. Now my games consist of me standing in front of my endzone to defend a few throws and then launching it 60yrds while the rest of my teams run out to catch it.

2012-04-12 03:12:59 PM
I haven't seen an Ultimate game in 30 years. Back then it was the favorite counterculture sport for folks willing to do more work than hacky sack requires. A key feature of the uniform was bandannas, lots of bandannas. From what I gather from my niece Quidditch has replaced it as the dorkiest team sport on campus, so maybe Ultimate has a chance to go mainstream.

You don't need any power to throw one of those Aerobies though. If you really wind up you can probably throw one 150-200 yards. They're kind of a pain in the ass. They're almost invisible from the side at a long distance because they're so thin and they break pretty easily. I guess a forehand fake would be pretty tough but I think that'd be the least of the problems.

Having never smoked pot I still love Ultimate and play whenever I get the chance (not enough lately). I've never been into watching others play, but usually because, like with most sports, mediocre play is torturous. I might be willing to give pros a chance though.

Went to their website.

8 teams... at least they aren't trying to be lame with some 4-5 team league to start with.

$9.99 PPV to watch live tho..... that isn't going to get you any fans dudes... just stream your games for free on Ustream or Livecast.

Wonder if they've tried to get on CBS Sports Network... seems like they'll take just about anything right now, especially in the summer when they don't have any college sports going on.

Sounds like he'd be the handler (think QB, but poorly named), but as soon as he makes that first pass, they're on their own to work their way into the end zone. Can't travel with the disc, so they'd be down a man if he didn't run up for support. You always want to have a deep man to discourage the long bomb, but this is almost to his team's detriment offensively.

Deep (safety), or Middle (MLB), to use NFL terms, are the most fun positions to play, as you get to knock down passes all day (if you're quick, and they don't realize the white kid with glasses has a 10' reach).

/Damn, gotta find me a weekend pick-up game

The upa.org website used to have a place where you could go and find pickup games, but it looks like they removed it on site redesign (poor decision). Usually a google or facebook search will find some games.
