(Crystal Ball)   Larry Sabato releases his first slate of possible VP contenders. Will Romney choose an exciting, unvetted choice or the solid, safe choice which would make the ticket a white bread sandwich?   (centerforpolitics.org ) divider line

Of Romney does pick anyone other than a white guy, the Left will just piss and moan about him trying to pander to minorities. If he picks a female, they'll just yell PALIN redux!

He will likely choose the most DERPy of the DERP brigade, and thus will ensure that the first Black president serves 2 full terms.

Not a bad list. Smart enough to not even consider most of Romney's primary opponents.

If Rubio has presidential aspirations, he wouldn't surprise me as veep pick. I think Chris Christie does have presidential aspirations, and he's aligned himself with Romney already, but they'd have to overcome his in-your-face personality and his promise to serve out his term as governor. And, quite honestly, his weight.

Rubio has this questionable ancestry that makes him a big no-no as Veep. Christie isn't a bad choice but I think he knows this ticket could bomb a future career, plus he won't be handled. Romney isn't going to allow his VP a voice given how much he flips positions.

I think the safest pick is Portman, but he doesn't help enough with the Fundies. Rand Paul is an underrated choice I think, but has some of the same problems. Gets Tea Party support which is big though. McConnell is one I hadn't thought of that makes sense.

I'm thinking Mitch Daniels. He's the only one in the bunch whose "personality" will not overshadow Mitt's lack thereof.

You know, there's a professor at UVA who offers a $100 bounty on snatching Sabato's rug off his head at a public forum. He recently withdrew that bounty because Sabato got a halfway decent rug that at least admitted he was getting older, and the professor was afraid that if someone snatched the hairpiece, Larry would return to the old one.

Dead for Tax Reasons: The list of non-whitebread choices is significantly shorter and easier to list

Yeah, well there aren't many non-white males in GOP positions. Any of the acceptable women are going to be Tea Party women, and they are inevitably going to make people think of Palin unless they come out hard with her basically being as smart as possible. This will of course weaken Republican support since she would look like an out of touch liberal for sounding smart. The other options are too moderate for what is needed for the VP spot this time. So it won't be a woman. There are no good Hispanic choices that want the job and don't have a controversy with them. Nobody will believe that a black choice is anything except a hopeless pander and won't work.

That leaves white bread and Fundie appeal. Any kind of small government appeal is also good. It's why I think the "smart" choice is Rand Paul.

In the Smart Woman category Olymipia Snowe would be pretty awesome, and would lead to a whole round of Margaret Chase Smith retrospective pieces that would make the Republicans seem less anti-woman to the folks who have forgotten that MCS died in the 90s.

/Too bad the Tea Partiers basically led to her saying "screw you guys, I'm going home".

Anyone with presidential aspirations for 2016 isn't going to want to be associated with the Romney ticket. It won't help them and will probably hurt them.

Except Romney needs derp for the base. He's somehow considered to be too moderate, so someone like her is a no-go.

He's moderate like a protagonist in a Bioware game is neutral. In other words, he flips positions so regularly that he only ends up moderate if you take the average.

Yup, and those oil berms were such an effective deterrent to the oil spill that the oil just stayed away!

Governor Harkonnen is the most likely choice. He's already identified himself thoroughly with Romney, and would bring a level of nastiness and assholery that GOP voters like to see in their ticket. If he doesn't get it, they are for sure going with a Southerner, which might include Nikki Haley but is more likely to be a white guy.

Richard Burr has been a farking disaster for the state of NC. He got lucky to be re-elected and only because of the Tea Party derpfest that was 2010.

/Kay Hagan is only slightly better. NC has some awful senators.

Actually, pretty much anyone Romney can pick will be torn apart on the issues. Just like Palin was. Like the issue of what newspapers or magazines she like to read.

Nah, like silver. It's nouveau-riche, over inflated price for what it actually is, and it has to be taken into for treatment every few years to remove the black marks.

Basically - it's the Sarah Palin of pawn shop fodder.

I've heard of this based on the logic of "Dumbocraps only voted for Obama because he is black so if we have another black guy then they will be totally confused and no longer vote for Obama because the cartoonish strawman I created is real!"

After my snarky previous comment, I like the list for the most part, although I think some of his top tier choices are fatally flawed. Basically, it's either Rubio or some "white bread sandwich", I think, with an outside chance of Huckabee.

I'm kind of expecting Bachman.

Her sky wizard derp will cover his space alien derp.
She's anti gay, but has a husband who could have starred in Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. (perfect Romney mentality)

She has personality to overcome his lack. She's like a throw rug over a stain, you will never know it's there that way.
Plus she's a woman and you know how they vote for the sisterhood instead of their own best interests.

The perfect Republican combo.

You can be a white male and not "generic" and "white bread". Huckabee, Rand Paul, and Christie qualify. But folks like Portman are completely boring; hence, "white bread".

I think Christie and Paul are horrible choices that would do more harm than good. Huckabee is a great choice (from a political stand point) but I doubt he would accept the job.
