Bah, when I was in middle school, they would line us up in the hallways, douse us with pepper spray, and we called that lunch. Kids today....geez

LavenderWolf: They don't just pepperspray you in military training, either.

But I doubt it would make you softer.

The Spartans used to whip their kids to the ground routinely to see who was the toughest. They did worse also.

They'd have probably paid handsomely for pepper spray to use in training.

This guy is dumb for using pepper spray inside. I get that.

Any cop with half a brain, especially if kids had to go to the ER, would have claimed "accidental discharge".

Yeah, we should totally base our society on an ancient warmongering fascist city-state notorious for child abuse!

If you're trying to get a population to accept having their heads kicked in by security forces you gotta start working on them while they're young.

Just came to thank subby for the proper use of too, to, and their. Pepper spray worked wonders for subby's education.

Superintendent Jerry Payne confirmed a school resource officer did spray and said he did it to force students inside classrooms. Payne said the students took too long to get to class, so the officer pointed the spray toward the ground, not at students.

Oh ok then. Using chemical weapons in a middle school as a tardiness enforcement tool is probably a-ok in this sense.

Treat kids like prisoners, act surprised when they act like them. USA USA USA

I would have never made it through school nowadays. I occasionally had a pocket knife and in high school had a mini pharmacy in my locker. If someone had a headache and they wanted an advil or something I'd give it to them (gasp!).

You forgot about them throwing 'defective' babies off of cliffs. When you had a baby you had to present it to the government elders. If they didn't like it for whatever reason, off the cliff it went.

That must be where Letterman's old "throwing watermelons out the window" deal came from.

Doesn't surprise me. Not even slightly.

Kids are treated like prisoners or livestock in schools these days. There's no respect and no basic human decency. The schools in my hometown would have just harassed and threatened the witnesses into silence, and the story would exist only as a rumor.

Crunch61: I can't believe people feel the need to have police in our middle schools in the first place.

You're trolling, but just to get it out of the way; I can't think of a single situation where using OC against a hall full of tardy middle school kids would be justified on the Force Continuum. Even from the scant facts available, it sounds like a firing at a bare minimum is warranted. More than a few criminal charges also come to mind.

Since unpopular viewpoints have become trolling, I'll growl on that this cop is not omniscient and admits to only knowing scant facts but still makes a judgement. Some might say he's acting "stupidly."

Three weeks of paid administrative leave and reassignment to an elementary school. When a cop screws up, they just need a vacation. It's the way they roll.

Meh, we kind of do know enough to say that this school resource officer has no business holding that job. The principle says he deliberately discharged chemical weapons inside of a crowded middle school hallway to "force kids into the classrooms".

I get the whole "don't rush to judgement guys!" angle, but save it for shiat like the Trayvon Martin trainwreck.

Can't the teachers (the male ones, at least) claim the same thing when they get caught with a student?

"Resource officer"? What is that, an Orwellian abuse of language for a 'security guard'?

Gyrfalcon: I dunno, middle school kids could use a shot of pepper spray six or eight times a day just to keep the hormones down.

in a more serious vein, WHY would anyone have pepper spray in a MIDDLE SCHOOL? Unless you work for the Youth Authority and it's part of your regular uniform.

No need for pepper spray. The "resource officer" should have simply formed a squad of some of the larger students and equipped them with clubs. Perhaps they could all wear some sort of uniform - perhaps brown shirts - to signify their authoritah.

2012-04-12 09:36:16 AM
Aren't they are simply doing what any good school does and preparing them for adulthood?

"Why would you need pepper spray?"

"Well I'm absolutely not permitted to carry a gun on premises, and this environment can turn deadly at a moments' notice. It's why I'm here in the first place. My job is to protect these students and foster a safe learning environment where they can all maximize their potential."

"And why did you USE the pepper spray?"

"Because them farking disrespectful dicks didn't move when I told em to!"

"And you wonder why people call you Officer Cock-knuckle?"

"I do wonder that. Yes."

DrBenway: FTA:

Oh. The junior high school students were taking too long getting to class. And after all, he didn't actually point it at the students. He merely pointed it at the ground. Clearly, this was a perfectly reasonable response and was totally justified then. Pepper spray as motivational tool. How... resourceful.

Yep, it sounds like Superintendent Payne needs to go the same way as the Resource Officer ... out the door with a pink slip in hand.

I hate frivolous lawsuits against school districts. That said, I hope these families sue biggly. Perhaps then someone will make a rule about pepper spray in a school. Hell, unless a kid is running the halls killing at random, what could possibly be the justification for this?

Why is he not in jail? Seems like assault to me. He attacked children with a potentially deadly weapon. Many of the students he hit didn't do anything wrong at all but where hospitalized because of his actions. Is the school/police force paying for that? This is not the richest community after all.

The appropriate way to fight back is to sue. I wonder if there's video of the incident.

If a direct spray is ok against peaceful, sitting protesters that won't move, indirect spray against school children is fine too.
