So...the new President's identity was accidentally leaked a day early?

Was Vegas laying out odds on this?

If not: Big freaking deal.

The whole thing?

This happened at my University. We found that our department chair was leaving when someone Googled his name and found a press release from his new university talking about how he was going there. At the time he hadn't told anyone, so it was kind of awkward all around.

Just a note to the subby...

It was cool for 15 minutes to say "accidentally" then not tell what after. Stop doing it. Not funny. Your mom.

"It was supposed to be a secret!"

"Why?"

"Because if you blow a lot of smoke about something and act like it's some kind of f*ckin' state secret, you have GRAVITAS!™"

"No kiddin'? Huh."

Some guy got another guy's old job.

Get over yourselves.

Everybody else probably has.

WTF is with the grimace on the guy on the left? He looks like he's about 3 seconds from shiatting his pants. I can fake-smile better than that and I loathe having my picture taken.

few folks care who holds that post. as long as Rutgers keeps cranking out graduates in need of jobs their work is done. just like every other diploma mill in America.

I've never understood why this university political stuff is such a big deal. I mean, the process described sounds more onerous than most corporate executive recruiting that I've been involved with. And really, what power does the president really have that is particularly important. Sure, universities are pretty big money and there are extended political issues, but in the end it is still just a bureaucratic position.

It's this sort of thing that makes academia silly and elitist (and I'm a multiple-degreed geek who loves academics).

We've really got to stop putting institutional leaders on such a pedestal. They're just people. A CEO is just a person. A Governor is just a person. A President is just a person. And basically they're all just got bureaucratic jobs. No big deal (or it shouldn't be).

The guy is wearing a toupee.

It was a secret because this guy is probably a real "Scott Walker" kind of bastard who is going to do all the down and dirty crap his lords tell him to do before he gets replaced by popular demand. And this guy will walk with a big chunk of money in his pocket. But they didn't want to give any chance of a protest happening before he takes his place, so they kept it secret.

Stoker: The guy is wearing a toupee.

He's the president of the State University of New Jersey. Of course he wears a rug, and from the look of it someone
is missing a polyester doormat somewhere in New Brunswick.

It's the same guy without the toupee, right? He's trying to hold onto the Presidency by faking being a completely different person.

No wonder the sitting President recused himself from the search committee. He can't be there to interview himself!

They don't just do this at universities. For some reason, some corporations think someone leaving is above-top-secret-level information, even if everybody already knows unofficially the person is leaving because he/she has been letting it slip for weeks.

It's like they think going to another job is contagious and if enough people find out, they'll quit en masse. Or something. I dunno ... it's stupid.

Also, just because we're talking about leaving a job:

* When you leave your office door open for every loud, boring-ass phone conversation that no one wants to hear (like your daily call to your mom), but all of a sudden start closing your door (or making phone calls in the stairwell), we all know something's up. Just sayin', it's not the "on the down-low" strategy you seem to think it is.
* When you normally dress like you just mowed your lawn, but then start coming into work wearing a suit or jacket or whatever, we know you're looking for another job. Again, not stealthy.
* When you start taking 2-hour-long lunches outside the office (esp. if you normally eat at the office/at your desk), we know you're going to an interview. Or maybe getting a quickie. Either way, show some respect and try to cover your tracks better. Or just know that everyone who's inclined to gossip is speculating about your "lunch" activities.

Even more surprising: the comments section at NJ.com resulted in actual useful information being disseminated, instead of just middle aged suburban ranting about youth culture and minorities.

jabelar: I've never understood why this university political stuff is such a big deal. Sure, universities are pretty big money and there are extended political issues, but in the end it is still just a bureaucratic position.

I don't know about in general, but there are a few reasons why it's significant in academia.

The biggest reason is that the vast majority of faculty in any department have tenure, or are tenure-track. That means they're planning on being around, or have been around for a long time. It makes it exceedingly important to maintain a good working relationship, then, as you'll be with those people for quite a while.

Another big reason is that the faculty aren't so replaceable. Faculty accept individual students, who then specifically study under them. They're also awarded grants directly- and usually they're awarded in conjunction with several faculty. This means that a faculty member moving can really disrupt the lives and work environment of the students and other faculty, and this creates a lot of tension for the people involved as they grapple with issues of loyalty and money. It works out better for everyone if you can avoid dealing with those anxieties until you know they're a real thing.

The last reason that I can think of is that the academic community is much smaller than most people realize. If a middle manager or supervisor decides to leave a company there will be an endless sea of faces ready to take their job. Not true in academia- there might be a couple-hundred to a handful of people in the world who do what you do. Much like point number one, you have to handle your affairs with the utmost care, lest you burn bridges with one of the five other people on earth who understands what you do.

I'm not saying that every academic job shift is a huge nightmare, but problems can and do arise when it happens. The accepted social norm is that it should be the prerogative of the person who wants to move to open that can of worms when they're ready.
