I'll be at that game. And as much as I love Tito, he's absolutely right to not be there. Good for him.

Management of this team reminds me of the new Three Stooges movie - none of it good.

2012-04-11 12:44:46 PM
Good for him. I was disgusted about the way they treated him. I have numerous articles of clothing with the Red Sox logo on them and since all that went down I can't bear to put them on. A couple of hoodies, a wind-breaker, a sleeveless shirt, a number of T-shirts...all worthless trash.

I've only seen maybe an inning of their season so far and that's because I'm not going to leave the room just because somebody happens to have the game on. And I'm somebody who usually watches every single game.

I thought about finding another team to follow, but maybe I'm just done with baseball.

I imagine the Sox were secretly fine with him saying no. A standing O for Tito with the team 2-10 or whatever at the time would prove a little embarrassing.

Well something needs to give. I've been watching the Jays/Sox series and it looks like half of them don't even want to be there. Hell the called third strike that closed last nights game was wide by two inches and Ortiz barely shook his head. The ump was even expecting some sort of chatter and looked shocked when he didn't even get a peep.

It okay, because John McNamara and Roger Clemens will be nice fill ins.

I've always wanted to find a reason to dislike Terry Francona since he managed the enemy, but I could never come up with anything. This just confirms that he's an admirable guy who was unfortunately associated with the kind of franchise that would smear the reputation of the best manager they've had in 9 decades on his way out the door.

And it was Lucchino who was the Globe's source, you can bet your last dollar on it.

My theory is simple: Larry leaked it on John Henry's order. He can't throw his boss under the bus. And quite simply, this team is starting to remind me of the early 80's Yankees, when they still had a lot of the talent from the old days but still couldn't pull it together mentally to go all the way. Not saying that Lucchino and John Henry are the split personalities of Steinbrenner or anything, I'm just saying that the mental composition of this team is farked and it's gonna take a while to fix it.

1. Terry Francona was the best manager for the Red Sox in the history of the franchise. This is a shame. On that note, the Red Sox are bigger (in Boston) than who owns and runs them. The man will deserve a party at some point, and I'd be willing to throw it myself if he doesn't want the current owners and current/former management involved.

2. There is a lot of distracting nonsense going on in Red Sox nation right now. So much that I'm wondering if I'm purposely being diverted away from something else being knocked off the front page. Any news in Liverpool or with Fenway Rausch racing that we should be enraged about?

Epstein not taking a contract-free Francona to Chicago is somewhat telling of some amount of disagreement. But practically every quote that came out in the off-season has Lucchino's fingerprints on it.

I thought about finding another team to follow, but maybe I'm just done with baseball.

Root for the Cubs, your expectations will be so low that you'll actually enjoy it when they do something good

/grew up a lukewarm O's fan, but three years living in Chi near Wrigley was enough to convert me-Cubs fans just seem to be having more FUN than other fans (especially Sox fans)

Which Sox are you talking about here buddy?
Also live on the North Side - but am a fan of the White Sox (Don't hate the Cubs, just not a fan) - also, I think I am having fun?

This is on Leyland. Sure Valverde is a solid closer, but by the time he came in the bases were already juiced. Dude had no room to work.

I kinda feel the same way. Despite the fact the current ownership group essentially brought the team its first world series in 86 years, I can't wait til they get bored with their little toy and sell the team. They're assholes.

BunkoSquad: I imagine the Sox were secretly fine with him saying no. A standing O for Tito with the team 2-10 or whatever at the time would prove a little embarrassing.

That would be epic, and you know damn well that's exactly what would happen.

Bad: hard for the Yankees to catch up to the Rays if they keep winning.

I love the ESPN commenters. There is just so much hate and unrest.

agricultureGnome_32: The Red Sox have been baseball's defining franchise for the past 100 years. And Francona delivered America it's two most significant sports titles of our generation. While it's a shame they are on bad terms at the moment, I think we all know deep down that just like Clemens, Pedro, Nomar, Damon, and Wakefield before him, Francona will return to Fenway someday to bask in the glory of a standing ovation from the greatest fans in sports.

Tell Your Friends Atlantis Georgia: And then you woke up in a cold sweat?

caram7: This is a joke, right?

El_Chubbo: "Baseball's defining franchise?" The 86-year-loser that was the last team to integrate because their owner was an unapologetic racist? Someone's trollin'.

Eh, that's pretty debatable. A better manager would have taken away their beers and chicken, then beat some motivation into them. (Also maybe he would have benched Lackey.) A better manager also would not have lost so many games to the Orioles.

It's pretty awkward to be in the position as a "fan" of a team, where you've lost all respect and faith in the organization...particularly the brass. There's a huge difference between "eh, our GM sucks" and "wow, the leadership are literally comprised of some of the biggest assholes in sports".

This resonates strong with this long-time Chavez Ravine denizen. Until new ownership is in place and until Vin is back in the broadcast booth, I'll approach this season as a restricted free agent. Made Spring Training in Phoenix a ton of fun; I caught every Cactus league team except the M's and A's. Two of the three fans I saw kicked out of games wore Dodger blue, one before the third out was recorded in the first inning of an Angels/Rockies game.

That's completely subjective. What made Terry a "better" manager was that he treated his guys like men. Like they were all in this together. That's what was making that team work for so long. Had he been (your version of) a "better" manager he would have treated Manny differently, there would have been much more drama and they probably would have lost Manny in 2004.

It was a house of cards that he kept together for a very long time. A lesser manager would have made the house come crashing down far far sooner and it would have extended the loser-mentality legacy that the Red Sox had been enjoying for 86 years.

I was talking about last year, upon the idea that he should've been considered for manager of the year. There's no doubt he did an amazing job throughout his tenure as manager - just not really last year.

I thought before I clicked that they wanted to get rid of Bobby V. We've looked awful so far, although it's too quick to change managers.

John Henry and co. saved Fenway, brought us two world series, and threw all that goodwill away with the atrocious manner they smeared and dismissed Francona. I've gone from viewing them as the saviors of a great franchise to hoping they sell the team ASAP before they can do any more damage.

That's how I feel. They swooped in...did the exactly right things to appease Red Sox Nation (and in fact invented Red Sox Nation), then they just totally blew it.

AND DON'T THINK THAT THE RED SOX DON'T HAVE SOMEBODY IN THIS THREAD SEEING WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THEM. THAT'S WHAT THEY DO.

Yanks_RSJ: I've always wanted to find a reason to dislike Terry Francona since he managed the enemy, but I could never come up with anything. This just confirms that he's an admirable guy who was unfortunately associated with the kind of franchise that would smear the reputation of the best manager they've had in 9 decades on his way out the door.

And it was Lucchino who was the Globe's source, you can bet your last dollar on it.

This. I'm surprised that Tito didn't go all Michael on Lucchino saying "You broke my heart, Larry. You broke my heart."

wut

The whole reason it's 1 game to begin with is A) it's supposed to be a "punishment" of sorts for not winning the division and B) to impact the schedule as little as possible.

Now, had I my druthers, the wild card round -would- be a best of three, but they'd be three straight days, and the divisional round would be a best of 7 like all the other series.
