Kind of bummed that the series that I'm most looking forward to watching (the bloodbath in Pennsyltucky) is coinciding with the beginning of the end of my Detroit Red Wings playoff hopes. Time for dueling flat-screens tonight, I guess!

At any rate, here are my picks for posterity:

Conference Semifinals:
Canucks
Sharks
Coyotes
Red Wings

Rangers
Bruins
Devils
Penguins

Conference Finals:
Canucks
Red Wings

Rangers
Penguins

Stanley Cup:
Canucks
Penguins

Stanley Cup Champions:
Pitstburgh Penguins

This of course comes with the caveat that if Sidney Crosby gets concussed by the Flyers (highly probable), all bets are off...

Anyone But Vancouver.

If Vancouver beats LA, fine.

But then St. Louis must beat San Jose and Chicago MUST beat Phoenix.

That would set up Vancouver/Chicago in the second round and that is the playoff series that I desperately want to happen.

THE NHL PLAYOFFS ARE SERIOUS BUSINESS!!! NO FUN ALLOWED!!!

(I thought professing my, as well as Jesus', deep abiding passion for you WAS pretty fun!)

In all seriousness, though, I don't think fun is allowed under the NHL Playoff Thread By-Laws until Smiths has started drinking. But I am admittedly a little rusty on the rules.

Seriously though, Preds are on a roll, Red Wings are struggling and if we lose to them this year there's going to be hell to pay.

The Preds are a dangerous team. If they beat Detroit, I see them in the Conference Finals. BUT. If Detroit is truly healthy (which they haven't been since February) AND if they all elevate their game to the next level (as they do every year), they will win.

They've also made Rinne look pedestrian most of the year. They seem to have an idea on how to beat him, unlike most other teams in the NHL.

Should be a hell of a series.

Plus it will be nice to see Suter in his future home at Joe Louis Arena.

I'm pretty sure he's already started.

Predictions (because I keep going back and forth on some series)

Rangers in 6
Bruins in 6
Devils in 6
Flyers in 7 (only because I almost expect Crosby to not finish the series. If I'm wrong, it will be Ilya the Choker's fault)

Canucks in 7 (O/U on times Luongo gets pulled for Schnider: 1.5)
Sharks in 7 (Blues seem to be slumping at the wrong time and one of their goalies is day-to-day)
Coyotes in 7 (goaltending, goaltending, goaltending)
Predators in 6

Conference Finals

Rangers over Bruins
Canucks over Predators

Stanley Cup Final

Rangers over Canucks

So it's time to start the prop-bets, eh?

So far we've got:
Over/Under on Number of games Bobby Lou (A.K.A. Lou Wongo) gets pulled for Schneider: 1.5
Over/Under on Koharski Donuts: Bakers Dozen, obviously.

I'd also propose:
Over/under on number of periods before a Detroit goal is disallowed because of Holmstrom interference: 2 (I'm taking the under).
(Sub bet 1: O/U on number of posts before a Red Wings fan is called a whiner: 100)
(Sub bet 2: O/U on number of posts before a Red Wings fan actually whines: 500)
Over/Under on number of games before Crosby is reconcussed: 4
O/U on minutes before Pierre McGuire says something stupid: 1
O/U on number of games before a controversial hit comes before Shanahan's Shanaban: 3

What else we got?

Also, everyone be sure to get your Idiot Edzo Bingo/Drinking Game Cards ready. Phrases to look for this year are:
1) Happy human
2) To all you young hockey players out there...
3) The period of the long change...
4) Active sticks
5) The most dangerous area of the ice
6) Any mention of a USHL team
7) Any mention of a small town in Illinois (e.g. "I'd like to send a shout-out to Delores Kennick in Effingham, who turned 94 today and is rooting on the Chicago Blackhawks)

Horton.
Sedin.
Toews.

There are some key players that are coming into the post-season with big question marks. I'm guessing Uncle Gary isn't too happy about that. Not unhappy enough to do anything serious about reducing concussions, mind you. But enough to feign some semblance of an emotion.

Yeah, not really a surprise there considering what happened to Savard a few seasons back.

It would be nice to have Hortie in the line up, of course, but I think the Bruins have enough depth to make a solid run without him. Let him heal fully and come back next season...

Though, I hope he still brings a little bit of the Garden with him on the the road games. : )

I'd also propose:
Over/under on number of periods before a Detroit goal is disallowed because of Holmstrom interference: 2 (I'm taking the under). Easy under
(Sub bet 1: O/U on number of posts before a Red Wings fan is called a whiner: 100) Under. And I'll probably be the one to say it first.
(Sub bet 2: O/U on number of posts before a Red Wings fan actually whines: 500) Under, but not by much
Over/Under on number of games before Crosby is reconcussed: 4 Under
O/U on minutes before Pierre McGuire says something stupid: 1 it will be before faceoff
O/U on number of games before a controversial hit comes before Shanahan's Shanaban: 3 It will come in Game 1 of Philly-Pitt

What else we got?

O/U on weak goals Ilya the Choker Bryzgalov gives up: 4.5
O/U on times it's mentioned that Shane Doan has never gone beyond the 1st round of the playoffs: 3.5
O/U on times they say Chara's the tallest guy in the league: 3.5
O/U on times the Vancouver riots are referenced to on Fark during the playoffs: 125
O/U on drinks Smiths has during the playoffs: 100
O/U on when Smiths says something to get himself permabanned from Fark: May 1

The only bad news is the uncertainty surrounding my favorite hockey club. My heart thinks that they can make the Conference Finals. My head tells me the Preds are going to whomp 'em good.

O/U on times it's mentioned that Shane Doan has never gone beyond the 1st round of the playoffs: 3.5 Over. But this will be the last year they will be able to say it.

As a Wings fan, I'm trying in vain to come up with good reasons why or scenarios where this Wings team can beat Nashville in a 7-game series, but I can't think of a single one.

Nashville will win this series going away in 5 games. I wouldn't be surprised if the games aren't even close, either. And I'd put money on them getting destroyed tonight.

This feels like Nashville's year.

Look, Detroit has shown on many occasions that they can play like an elite team. They showed it in the 3rd periods against St. Louis and Chicago, respectively, at the end of the season. They also showed it before the injury woes hit. They seem to be able to turn it on at the flip of a switch. This has been the Red Wings MO for much of the last few seasons. Johan Franzen is the living embodiment of this. He lazes his way through the regular season, showing few (if any) flashes of brilliance, and a general malaise that would get him traded in most situations. But when it gets near playoff time he awakens. It's maddening, but it's what this team has become.

Unfortunately, the rest of the league is catching up with them talent-wise, making it harder and harder for them to dig themselves out of the holes they put themselves in.

So, what I'm saying is that if the team we saw play the final period and OT in the STL and CHI games decides to play 60 minutes, they can win. But the probability of that happening consistently? Low. These guys CAN win. I'm not sure they WANT to win. And that's the most disappointing indictment a Red Wings fan can level at this team.

All that said, I think they're trending in the right direction. Helm returns and he's a playoff BEAST. In addition, the emergence of Nyquist has been refreshing (I look forward to him taking the worthless Hudler's spot in the top-6 next season, and Jiri can drag some other team down). Finally, if the Defense doesn't tighten up, I don't think Babcock will hesitate to bring Brendan Smith in. The kid is the real deal and has earned himself some post-season ice time if/when one of the back-end regulars slips up. The availability of these three players and what they bring to the table is encouraging if things don't go well in the first pair of games in Nashville.
