tsunami warning issued for southern Thailand

The Reuters news agency is reporting that Thailand's national disaster prevention centre has issued a tsunami warning in six southern provinces along the Anadaman coast.

Residents in Phuket, Krabi, Ranong, Phangnga, Trang and Satun were ordered to move to higher ground because of a possible tsunami, an official with Thailand's National Disaster Prevention Centre told Reuters by telephone.

You just know there's some poor Indonesian guy who's literally just finished putting the final touches on the home that was destroyed in the last tsunami who's about to have an epically bad day.

rynthetyn: I'm kind of surprised, nothing has popped up on my facebook feed yet even though I've got friends who should have been close enough to feel it, including in Malaysia. A month or so ago when there was some really minor earthquake near Delhi, half my feed seemed to be posts from people freaking out about it.

If they're very close to it, their power and/or communications may be out. Or overloaded with traffic.

Shadow Blasko: puffy999: TV man claimed it was a slip fault, which is very, very good.

Yeah.. I just heard the same. *crosses fingers*

I thought only subduction quakes could get this big

This would be a MASSIVE slip fault earthquake though, wouldn't it?

BUT until that is confirmed, I'll hold my breath. It was not on the same fault as the last quake, I do not believe, which again is a good thing.

Apparently, the 2004 tsunami was triggered by a 9.1 quake at 30km, this one is about 8.9 at about 32km.

Expect trouble.

Uh oh. I really hope this was just someone accidentally dropping a cinderblock beside the seismograph.

nekom: Shadow Blasko: Nothing on local media yet... I suppose the likelyhood of a nasty tsunami mostly depends on the type of the quake.

I'm no geologist, but I believe it makes a HUGE difference whether or not it was (for lack of the proper term) a slip or a bump. I'm pretty sure the depth is very important as well. 8.7 is no small deal in any case.

Yeah, if it is a megathrust earthquake, it's going to be nasty.

Reuters and the BBC are saying it was an 8.9... But "Great Quakes" are always modified when more information comes in. 8.9 would put it in the top 10.
