I don't dislike Cage... but his forte was quirky characters, not being a leading man or action star. When he plays quirky characters he's pretty good. The further into his career he got though, the less he played those parts and the more he opted for the leading man or action roles, which he just doesn't really fill that well. At least not for me, YMMV.

Proving you wrong right here, buddy. Nic Cage is probably my favourite actor, nothing ironic about it. Sure, dude has been in a lot of bad films (I defy you to find any actor who doesn't have at least some regrettable pics in their career), but - as Roger Ebert said, "Nic Cage is a great actor in good films, and an indispensable actor in a bad film".

I pretty much agree. He seems to rise to the material, like any good actor. He was excellent and annoying in Adaptation (personal fav), and perfectly stupid in stuff like Ghost Rider.

I understand how some people might not like his style, but others people seem to expect him to not be Nicolas Cage.

If you ever want to see Nicolas Cage act more batshiat crazy than he has in any other movie, watch "Vampire's Kiss".

This. It's pretty much a movie about a guy who thinks some chick turned him into a vampire. So, he goes out and gets plastic fangs, slicks his hair back, wears a cape and eventually some dude comes in and kills him for some reason... The parts where I was paying attention were goofy as all hell.

Look at every shiatty box-office bomb in America, the movies that you see a preview for and wonder "Who the fark is actually going to watch that shiat?". Then check its domestic box office performance vs. foreign box office performance. Then do the same for that little arthouse film that you liked so much (or were told to like so much). See how it did overseas.
