The pathetic thing is that I can mentally hear nearly every piece of dialogue in the video.

Oh God, not f*cking Crystal Reports. POS. Even worse than Cage's acting, which is a really low bar to slip under.

We're stuck using that, and Business Objects crapware for a lot of stuff at work.

Some of those clips are a cheat... In one of the Raising Arizona clips, for instance, the editor actually recorded silence over top it, even when Cage's lips are speaking.

A lot of people give him guff for no range, and he doesn't have a lot in his voice and delivery.

But after seeing those clips, he's got a lot of body language, a slight posture change and a perm, maybe just a couple extra pounds, and he's a different person. Add in some subtle facial tendencies and maneurisms per character, and you are getting to it. It's the whole package, and he trumps many of his peers(action/comedy/dramedy stars) because he really does have more range.

Even if I can't put it into words, I can see now why I never quite agreed with his detractors.

Not sure if serious.

He is easily the worst "A list" actor in Hollywood. Probably the history of Hollywood. He's only where he is today because of his uncle.

I didn't think anyone actually "liked" Cage, only "liked him ironically".

I don't dislike Cage... but his forte was quirky characters, not being a leading man or action star. When he plays quirky characters he's pretty good. The further into his career he got though, the less he played those parts and the more he opted for the leading man or action roles, which he just doesn't really fill that well. At least not for me, YMMV.

He's a joke now, but back in the Leaving Las Vegas days he was the real deal

24.media.tumblr.com

You know why he makes s**t now? Because he spent years giving great performances in great movies that never made a dent at the box office and then realized that americans like dumb movies where things blow up real good, so he teamed up with Michael bay and sure enough, the money began rolling in. Or in other words:

Proving you wrong right here, buddy. Nic Cage is probably my favourite actor, nothing ironic about it. Sure, dude has been in a lot of bad films (I defy you to find any actor who doesn't have at least some regrettable pics in their career), but - as Roger Ebert said, "Nic Cage is a great actor in good films, and an indispensable actor in a bad film".

It's fine to hate Nic because of his choice of roles, but to say that he's an awful actor is simply wrong. He has some pretty amazing, iconic performances under his belt, and in most cases there is something uniquely Cage that he put into it. Personally, I can't imagine anyone but him pulling off the Sailor role in Wild At Heart.

I pretty much agree. He seems to rise to the material, like any good actor. He was excellent and annoying in Adaptation (personal fav), and perfectly stupid in stuff like Ghost Rider.

I understand how some people might not like his style, but others people seem to expect him to not be Nicolas Cage.

This. It's pretty much a movie about a guy who thinks some chick turned him into a vampire. So, he goes out and gets plastic fangs, slicks his hair back, wears a cape and eventually some dude comes in and kills him for some reason... The parts where I was paying attention were goofy as all hell.

This may be the most ill-informed statement of American exceptionalism ever. Seriously, you're a farking idiot. The reason foreign films seem so good is because only the good ones wind up being shown here. We're the entertainment equivalent of the sushi market in Tokyo.

Look at every shiatty box-office bomb in America, the movies that you see a preview for and wonder "Who the fark is actually going to watch that shiat?". Then check its domestic box office performance vs. foreign box office performance. Then do the same for that little arthouse film that you liked so much (or were told to like so much). See how it did overseas.

The world loves our shiatty movies. Pretending Americans are unique in their love for Michael Bay is incredibly ignorant.

Even a set of sounds has pauses and gaps in it. It's the anticipation of the next note that is music.

But you are entitled to your own definition of music. Which I think is Cage's point.

4'33 was inspired in the composer of the orchestra, John Cage, by visiting an anechoic chamber in Harvard:

In 1951, Cage visited the anechoic chamber at Harvard University. An anechoic chamber is a room designed in such a way that the walls, ceiling and floor absorb all sounds made in the room, rather than reflecting them as echoes. Such a chamber is also externally sound-proofed. Cage entered the chamber expecting to hear silence, but he wrote later, "I heard two sounds, one high and one low. When I described them to the engineer in charge, he informed me that the high one was my nervous system in operation, the low one my blood in circulation."[14] Cage had gone to a place where he expected total silence, and yet heard sound. "Until I die there will be sounds. And they will continue following my death. One need not fear about the future of music."[15] The realisation as he saw it of the impossibility of silence led to the composition of 4′33″.

This is the 2nd time I've seen a reference to the silence chamber this week.

Depends on the film.

Leaving Las Vegas, Bringing Out the Dead, Adaptation, Lord of War? Great.
Ghost Rider, The Wicker Man, Next, Bangkok Dangerous? Awful.
