I put the blame for this squarely on FOX News' shoulders.

Reminds me of when Limbaugh said he hoped Obama would fail. He would rather liberalism turn out wrong and drag the country down than have it turn out liberalism works and America succeeds.

But in today's more polarized setting, divided government more often results in paralysis and dysfunction; each one party is increasingly influenced, if not dominated, by their most ideological and less pragmatic factions.

Correcting TFA. The Democrats have been swaying to the middle recently, as evidenced by their support of a health care plan once endorsed by Bob Dole, Mitt Romney, Senate Republicans and the Heritage Foundation.

With their unlimited, shameless filibuster, Republicans don't have to have a majority to control the Senate. The article mentioned this but by calling the Democrats more ideological and less pragmatic, they're writing the same false equivalency bullshiat that Obama warned about.

Here's your big hint that the Republican Party is the toxin:

There is nothing Democrats can do that would cause the Republicans to compromise. There is no position, agreement or stand the Democrats can take that the Republicans would agree to. The only agreeable thing that Democrats can do is lose.

They should marginalize the religious right as well. Rockefeller/Goldwater Republicans know how to negotiate and compromise but the extreme right cannot.

Obama will broker a compromise between the Democrats and Republicans and then, maybe, they'll say he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

2012-04-10 05:37:39 PM
The Democrats could fervently advocate for complete anarchistic free-market capitalism and the erasure of any vestige of the welfare state, and the Republicans would find fault with that policy. The Republicans want power and will do anything, say anything to get it. If they suspected that a large portion of the populace wanted to put undesirable minorities in concentration camps, the Republicans would argue for it and accuse Barack Obama of hating the white race for opposing.

Reading about the redistricting changes in 2010 and how they benefit Republican incumbents (by 4 to 1) made me realize that if this keeps up we will drift toward a one party state, where the Republican party controls the entire government, like 2000-2006 but with no hope of change. If fascism comes here (wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross), that's how it will happen. No one will need to promise to take over to fix things because they'll already be in control. We already have the tradition that the President is the leader of his party. When 2020 redistricting happens we could honestly fall into a one-party state.

I'll sound crazy when I say this, but if our country is to be saved, Fox News must be destroyed. Democratic forms of government only work when the populace is well informed. Fox News has been spewing outright lies about Obama and the Democrats since 2008 and they are almost entirely responsible for the current political climate.

My hope is that somehow, the Republicans will implode and the left wing of the Democrats will see the opportunity and split off into a new party. That would restore the ideological balance we had for most of the 20th century.

This is pretty blatantly obvious when the Democrat actually steals their ideas and presents them back to them and they then declare their own ideas big government communism.

Sadly the Democrats have moved so far right the only major difference between them is abortion. So once again our election is based around abortion. Clearly the most important issue of our times.

The Democrats controlled the House for 45 years pulling the same shiat, yet somehow we survived. District maps have been gerrymandered since before the first congress was elected. California doesn't even have a district that is in danger of changing parties - the state is settled the way it is.

The operative word in your statement isn't Republican - it's incumbent. In the states that retained Democratic control after the 2010 elections (and census), Democrats drew ridiculous maps to protect their incumbents just the same as the Republicans. It's getting to the point where each party is colluding with each other to divy up the pie, voters be damned.

The only change that happened this time around is that the Republicans were in control of more state legislatures than usual after the census. Eventually voting will be something people do out of habit, not because it matters. (new window)

Yes and no.... I would amend your comment to "if our country is to be saved, Fox News must become irrelevant". And not through a silencing effort from "the left" etc., but from an awakening of the populace that they have been sold a bad product. From a self-awareness that they cannot rely on base "us v. them" approach to life and and the world...

Unfortunately, I am not sure how disposed our species is to making that leap, let alone, Americans specifically. It's easier, more comfortable, and more natural to side with the one reinforcing what you "know" to be "right" than to question your own beliefs and take the hard actions of growth. This is doubly true when dealing with groups.

I almost think it may take revolution or formation of new countries/nations elsewhere while allowing America to decline into obscurity. No empire can last forever, but from the ashes and good ideas of one failed one, even better can arise. Maybe a morbid point of view, and if anyone can prove it wrong, it's probably the U.S., but at present I don't see too many realistic ways to turn the massive ship that is this country at the angle needed.

The lemmings are out in full force I see.

"Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it"

The truth is....

A. Most Progressives offer America nothing other than new ways to piss money away. 6 Trillion dollars in 3.5 years and we've got 2.5% GDP growth with 10 trillion dollars of short term treasury debt coming due in the next 7 years. Yippie.

B. Most Progressives are either too incompetent to pass a budget or have decided it was their patriotic duty to break the law and not bring one to a vote because the public might actually see WTF they are spending their money on. 1077 days without one. (That's 3 weeks away from 3 years for those of you who took art instead of math in college) Patriots indeed.

C. Most Progressives still continue to fling monkey shiat because they are too stupid or lazy to have an honest debate with honest numbers. I don't know how many times the cost of Obamacare has to be revised up for somebody to call the president out. He lied about the cost. He knew what he was doing. He went to Harvard. He is a Liar.

D. Stands for demonize baby demonize.
.
E. The president attacking the supreme court for doing their job is the only thing unprecidented about them enforcing an absurd legislative overreach and not understanding what the term "Judicial Activism" means.

F. Paul Ryan may give you nightmares, but at least he has the balls to put his ideas on paper for all to see. The democrats in the senate and their fearless leader are all gutless fish.

G. Most Progressives aren't intellectually honest enough to challenge their own positions. They just mock and dismiss like any good closed minded simpleton.

H. Most Progressives actually believe that this president is as popular as the sycophants in the media make him out to be.

Saul Alinsky's streets of Chicago made this president who he is.

"Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it." That's all the this president has to offer. No budget, no plan, no solutions, just class war, race war, sex war, and toss grandma off the cliff for good measure.

What will it say about the progressive movement if the savior loses to the weakest frontrunner in history after being handed the largest one party majority in 35 years when he took office?

Does finger pointing ever get old?

No, and I would presume after that tirade of finger pointing at the "progressives", which by the way you manage include most anyone in Washington shows you know little of the term, makes a certain irony to the post. Pretty much all officials in Washington now are corporate shills, R or D, and your accusations are aimed at the D's which are by no practical measure actually a progressive group. Progressives were chastised by this "Alinsky-model president". Alinsky by the way, provided the model and the form by which a group you seem to parrot here, the Tea Party, found their identity and successes.

You should also look into the original authors of most of the president's implemented ideas and decide if you are ready to demonize Bob Dole, Evan Bayh, or Ronald Reagan as progressive boogey men.

Democrats are not much better than Republicans, and conservatives have items worth debate with liberals as well as with progressives. The importance is not confusing teams with ideas like the party masters would really like you to do. I agree with liberals and progressives much more than I do with Democrats. I am more likely to agree with a conservative on certain items than I ever will a Republican for that matter.
