Now, the even more intense and even more meaningless Phase Two begins. When Phase Two is complete, we will know which bland, middle-of-the-road corporate spokesman will lie to us for for the next four years. It's an epochal day.

Holy hell, they really seem to hate Romney as much as they hate Obama. A lot of em are gonna sit this one out from the looks of it.

Romney is a Massachusetts Republican, which is a Blue Dog Democrat in many Republican strongholds.

That, and Mormon is just about as much an "other" as "Kenyan".

doesn't matter. the GOP rank and file will STFU, wipe their brains clean and vote for Romney. they'll forget they voted against Romney, they'll do what the party orders them to do.

I think you're right, but it won't be as unimous as it has been in the past. I still say a not-trivial percentage stay home.

What if they get gay marriage and abortion referendums on the ballot?

I'm hoping it'll backfire and draw more liberal leaning voters to the polls to say "Enough of this shiat".

Oregon has a drive to get personhood amendment that explicitly bans all abortions added to our state constitution, no consideration for women's health and safety, as well as some birth control methods.

I think they'll fail to make the ballot though, and even if it somehow makes it and then somehow passes, a federal court will probably nullify it based on existing case law.

At this point republicans would be smart to let Obama have it. Democrats are more apt to shut their mouths and let Obama trample people's rights and keep tax cuts for the rich than they would if Romney was in office.

the freepers are having a mental breakdown right now, but again - its early. by the end of the week I suspect they'll have worked their way around to accepting Romney as the opposition candidate.

You may be right. But it will be interesting, to say the least. This will send shockwaves through the evangelicals. Don't expect them to accept this without freaking out.

of course they'll freak out. then they'll convince themselves that they cannot go against the will of god, and that'll be that.

On one hand, I feel bad laughing about it considering his daughter is in the hospital again with pneumonia for a second time this year.

On the other hand, most parents who have to deal with a child with the same disease she has also go into debt because of the huge health care costs. And yet, he doesn't support fixing the health care system or going to a national plan.

I hope Obama can tell me how to feel.

zedster: Zion (Hebrew for penis)

No.

"Zion" is the Anglicized form of the Hebrew word "tsee-own" [tzadik-yud-vav-nun), a euphemism for Jerusalem; though really it's a placeholder for "rebuilt center of Jewry, complete with Temple." I think it's also the origin of the English word "scion".

"Zayin" (also the 7th letter of the Hebrew alphabet) is a slang term for "penis", due to the shape of the letter in modern Hebrew block print.

I've corrected this mistake before. I really hope it's not a "thing" now...

I was taught that in Lutheran school as well, although my teabagger dad is favorable toward Mormons having worked for a company owned by a Mormon family for 40 years. I don't think they care if it gets overturned. Then they can use 'activist judges' and a slight rewording of the same bill to get people to the polls next time.

Really as long as they get the fundies to the polls for something they will vote (R) and that is the only goal.

No one ends their campaign anymore. Besides the financial implications it suggests you've been defeated. Suspending a campaign implies that it's just on hold. Herman Cain "suspended" his campaign back in early December. Presumably it's still in a state of suspension since he's never announced an official end to it.

Not that I am an expert on aboriginal literature in Canada but I'd suggest that there are a number of awesome books on Louis Riel. But, more importantly, Alanis Obomsawin's documentary of the Oka Crisis, Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance, covers a lot of similar themes up to (nearly) the present day, and you can watch the full feature film on the NFB's website.

make me some tea: Annnd here it is, from TPN's Judson Phillips:

Rick Santorum is suspending his presidential campaign, in effect making Mitt Romney the Republican Presidential Nominee.

From the AP:

A Republican close to the campaign says the former Pennsylvania senator was to make the announcement Tuesday in his home state of Pennsylvania, two weeks before the GOP presidential primary there. Santorum faced a tough fight in his home state against Romney.

Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich are technically still in the race, but Santorum's withdrawal effectively ends the race.

For the Tea Party and conservatives, we have a lot to think about.

This should have been the year of the Tea Party Presidential candidate. We should have been able to offer the American people a clear choice between Obama's vision for failed socialism and the end of America and the bright, shinning, city on a hill that is America. We could have offered them the hope of a great future.

Now, to get Obama out of office, we have to support a Republican who is only slightly less liberal than Obama. At least he is a natural born citizen and not an anti-American Marxist.

Romney is a soulless technocrat. To him, everything is a problem to be solved.

The passion of patriotism and conviction do not enter into those equations. Romney is a big government, statist Republican. He also made it a point to win the nomination without conservatives and the Tea Party.

For conservatives, our future now lies with trying to put conservatives in control of not only the Senate but the House as well.

Romney now needs to reach out to conservatives, not go left as a lot of his advisors are going to tell him to. This election is a referendum on Obama. With unemployment at record levels and gas prices causing major economic damage, Obama is very vulnerable. But surveys on Tea Party Nation show that one quarter of Tea Party supporters will not vote for Romney in the general election.

If a quarter of Romney's base stays home, he ...

The only outreach the party will do for them is to push them further under the bus.

Face it, his beliefs are crap, even his name means crap. I applaud his principled stance, but you know who else fought for his shiatty beliefs until he was hiding in a bunker? Rick took the high road and got out once the nation decided his beliefs are too shiatty for anything but a shiat burger like him.

"Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity."
