So is this thing really that good? Cause I don't watch a lot of TV, I'm a movie guy. I don't have HBO but I'll buy the box set if you tell me to. Tell me what to do, dammit!

Reading Book 3 is the literary version of Homer's conversation with the evil Krusty doll salesman.

...that's bad...oh, that's good...that's bad, so so bad...that's good, omg finally...that's bad...that's good, I think - wait, nope, that's baaaaaaaaad.

That's toward the latter half of book 3, so I'd guess it would be in season 4. I'm looking forward to seasons 3 and 4 already and we're only 2 episodes into season 2.

Read all the books first, and now watching season 1 on DVD. Anyone else in the same boat? I am sort of underwhelmed. I think it would have been better not to read first.

I agree with this.

Watching the show and then reading, you get to find a lot of additions to the story.

Reading and then watching, you get to find a lot of subtractions from the story.

I think the worst part of having read the books first is not being able to invest in certain characters...not naming any names here....Let's just say once you've read about some of the things, you will be careful about who you wedding yourself.

I'm excited for the Battle at Blackwater later this season. That was possibly the best medieval battle I'd ever read and I read a LOT of medieval histories.

The Battle for the Wall is definitely next on my list. I'd put it higher if I weren't so afraid of the god-awful CGI they'd have to use for the the giants and mammoths.

It's definitely worth reading first, if only because they're such great books. The first 3 are absolutely outstanding. 4th & 5th were supposed to be one book and, unfortunately, it shows, but the story is still really solid. Knowing the story and all the characters does take away the surprise when watching the show, but I can still just sit back and enjoy the acting. Dinklange is fantastic and goddammit, the kids they cast are farking amazing.

Friends who haven't read the books are having a little trouble following everyone because there are so many characters and EVERYBODY has an agenda. It's harder to keep track of who's who and who's doing what to whom and why, but not impossible.

Well that's fine but even though I don't have time to read the books I'm not going to whine about plot holes that are explained in the book like I did with Lord of the Rings or The Passion of the Christ.

The dragons didn't, so far at least, so there's hope

What i am looking forward to, dreading at the same time:
-The Red Wedding
-The Plaza of Pain
-Lord Beric dueling the Hound
-"You know nothing, Jon Snow"
-The Brotherhood without Banners

I reread A Storm of Swords so many times between it and A Feast for Crows, that i know it almost as well all of the other books combined.

"IS THERE GOLD IN THE VILLAGE?!"

They have had, what 2 minutes of screen time over the entire life of the show?

So have the wolves. And the effects are terrible.

2012-04-10 04:09:18 PM
The wolf effects aren't that bad, I'm an effects whore and I don't even cringe when they show up. They're not on the level of a feature film but they're not Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus bad either. They're more than passable imho.

2012-04-10 04:09:38 PM
Reading the books beforehand is KEY. I read the series twice within a 3 year period, and it was STILL difficult to sort out all the various houses and connections.

My non-book girlfriend and I spend a nice few minutes after each episode doing a "debrief" where I clarify things and help explain how various storylines connect (without spoiling anything unless she insists on knowing).

I've liked the series and have read the books as well. I think Tyrion by far has the best lines and Dinklage definitely deserved his Emmy. My only complaint has been the wolves...but that's a budget thing since they have to do dragon effects.

People should be careful when they are invited to dinner after a wedding. That's what I'm waiting on. But that's not for a while. Sadly. But I'll take a firery knock-down dragged out defacing battle that will occur at the end of this season. Should be juicy.

How many more seasons before they show where whores go? 18?

So far I'm losing interest in season two. I'll need moar tits and violence if they want to keep me.

2012-04-10 04:45:52 PM
I haven't read the books, but my husband and I are ADDICTED to the show. We only got HBO a month ago, and watched like 4 episodes of the first season every day until we were caugth up. My only complaint is now I have to wait a WHOLE week to get my GOT fix.

Last episode had too little Joffrey. I love to hate him.

And what is up with the Iron Islands guy (forgot his name)? Is he that rape-y/perverted in the book? When we found out who that chick was.... I just.... UGH!

lol, as a female, I actually think they could use fewer tits.

And I'm upset that Khal Drogo is no longer there... he was the only real "hot" one for the ladies.

They've had tits galore.

If you want violence, there's a couple of minor things coming up, and then Episode 9 is supposed to be 1 60 minute battle.

/So May 27th?
