I give it 2/10 he is trying way too hard

Twitter rumor going around right now that there are only 26 college degrees between all players and coaches currently in baseball. That can't be right, can it?

If the Marlins had fans, you would have a good point there.

Marcus Aurelius: Sure Batista was a fascist butcher, but he was OUR fascist butcher.

Only in his second term. In his first term, he was a quite liberal and progressive reformer who ousted the previous fascist butcher.

It's almost like the team is located in a city with a population that consists of people who fled communist Cuba.

I think it's kind of shiatty to suspend someone due to their political beliefs, but he probably did alienate 20 of their 26 fans. That's not good for the bottom line.

subby is quite the moran. There's a large cuban population in Miami, mostly refugees or their descendants. This is a PR move to try to keep them from hating the team. A financial decision plain and simple.

@WhitlockJason: Should Ozzie have known better living in Miami? Absolutely. But Ozzie doesn't strike me as an intellectual. He's a baseball player.

The fact of the matter is that Ozzie is a big pal of Hugo Chavez who in turn is a big pal of Fidel.

Plus Ozzie is a douchebag.

The Marlins manager was suspended without pay for five days for his pro-Castro comments.

What, exactly, does this have to do with Occupy Wall Street?

He offended the Cubans who came here for our freedoms.

Freedom of speech for example.

Hidden meaning or just arbitrary number for free speech violation.

jayhawk88: Twitter rumor going around right now that there are only 26 college degrees between all players and coaches currently in baseball. That can't be right, can it?

I could easily see that. The grand majority of baseball players didn't go to university but started as pros right away. That's the same thing with hockey as well.

2012-04-10 12:45:36 PM
Ozzie should go where the real baseball fans are--Cuba.

I don't know if it's true, but given how many of the 1st through 3rd round draft picks are drafted right out of high school, it wouldn't surprise me. Almost none of the top prospects stay all the way through college.

I love the headlinem, Batista was worse than Castro

2012-04-10 12:48:09 PM
I see the liberals are re writing history...again. Under Batista you could leave the country, change jobs, or even have a newspaper. Castro is a thug and a killer, stop the liberal crap of trying to paint up a turd like Fidel.

Except for the fact that in Miami all businesses and politicians feel the need to feverishly suck the Cuban-American community's collective cock, this wouldn't have even cracked the "Top 100 Examples of Wacky Shiat Ozzie Guillen Says" list. Of course, in Miami, saying anything about you-know-who other than that the Bearded One is the worst human being in the history of the entire world is practically a crime.

From the reaction, you would've thought what Guillen said was more along the lines of his usual brain-droppings, something like the following:

"Hey, I know that your granddaddy lost his sugar plantation and his mansion back in 1959, but that was over 50 years ago and you ain't never gettin' it back, so you Cubano turds need to get over it already. Plus, you talk funny. I mean, I know everyone in Latin America thinks Spaniards speak Spanish like someone is holding a cat turd under their nose while they talk, and I know Spaniards think that Mexicans and some other Latin Americans speak Spanish like trained chimpanzees with Tourette's, but everyone, Spaniards and Latin Americans alike, think that when Cubans speak Spanish they sound like a gay French guy imitating an Argentinian drag queen. Amiright?"

2012-04-10 12:48:40 PM
Yes, Ozzie's statements fly in the face of their PR scheme to win the hearts of minds of Latin baseball fans.

How many U.S. baseball players have defected to Cuba?

I'm sure there would be no outcry whatsoever if Ron Washington were suspended by the Rangers for making remarks critical of President Obama.

Yeah, and they're free to tell Ozzie to go fark himself. Of course, the Marlins can't really afford to offend anybody in their extremely small fanbase, thus the apology and suspension.

jayhawk88: Twitter rumor going around right now that there are only 26 college degrees between all players and coaches currently in baseball. That can't be right, can it?

It is true. Baseball players have the lowest average education level (by degree status) of all major pro athletes. Something like 75% have no formal education beyond high school, and of those 25% or so don't even get a high school diploma or a GED. Since coaches are almost exclusively former players, it stands to reason their stats would be similar.

On topic - This wouldn't be an issue with any club other than the Marlins, who built their new stadium in Little Havana.
