Yeah the trade embargo had nothing to do with that.

On the one hand, it's bullshiat to be suspended for talking about non-sports related topics and issues.

On the other hand, an early-morning Easter weekend raid to return a kid back home decided a Presidential Election.

So, yeah, considered him suspended for pissing off the huge hypersensitive segment of the fanbase.

2012-04-10 01:59:54 PM
It's funny to me that the Marlins hired Ozzie Guillen to be their manager and then suspended him less than a week into the season for saying something inflammatory. You hired Ozzie Guillen, what exactly did you expect was going to happen?

That's like hiring Bob Knight to be your basketball coach and then acting all shocked when he hucks a chair at someone.

theknuckler_33: subby is quite the moran. There's a large cuban population in Miami, mostly refugees or their descendants. This is a PR move to try to keep them from hating the team. A financial decision plain and simple.

Yeah, and to them I say, EABOD. You supposedly came to this country because you wanted freedom. Well, freedom means people get to have political opinions that differ from yours, and they also get to say them. Out loud. If you don't like it, go find another country.

And the same goes for you, "Israel can do not wrong and if you criticize Israel you're anti-Semite" folks.

BiffDangler: Can't we just say that Batista and Castro were bad? Why does it have to be either/or?

Because the Cuban exiles had no problem with Batista - they had a happy little arrangement, then Fidel and Che had to come along and ruin everything.

"Hey! You can't execute those torturers! Those are the good guys!"

fun quote:

"Fulgencio Batista murdered 20,000 Cubans in seven years ... and he turned Democratic Cuba into a complete police state - destroying every individual liberty. Yet our aid to his regime, and the ineptness of our policies, enabled Batista to invoke the name of the United States in support of his reign of terror. Administration spokesmen publicly praised Batista - hailed him as a staunch ally and a good friend - at a time when Batista was murdering thousands, destroying the last vestiges of freedom, and stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the Cuban people, and we failed to press for free elections."

let's play guess the pinko-commie that said that. ok, so he was a democratic, but still...

this is who america supported and this is who cuban-exiles were sad to see run off by castro since they were the rich and power and liked oppressing people: Fulgencio Batista (new window)

/castro maybe a turd, but batista was a bigger turd

I don't care if they fled your mom, they've got no business complaining if someone praises a world leader they don't approve of. Not when "complaining" consists of demanding an apology or asking that he be suspended or fired, anyway.

If I can tolerate you idiots claiming Reagan was a great president, you can tolerate someone praising Castro.

Saying Batista was worse than Cuba is like saying Pacreatic cancer is worse then Leukemia. Can you just agree that Castro is a murdering, torturous human rights violating jerkoff? So was the Domincan Repub's Trujillo. It should be enough to say that all of these despots are assholes.

wait, did he say that he "loves" Castro or that he "respects" him. I'm seeing conflicting reports.

/Castro killed 5,000 people
//U.S. military forces killed many times that many civilians during the Iraq War II
///We paid for those killings with our taxes

I don't understand the outrage.
I spoke to a guy this morning who has raised in Florida and whose parents fled Cuba.
He said the Florida Cubans don't give two shiats about the Marlins and never support the team anyway.

But since the Marlins suspended him I guess they have a higher standard when it comes to Cuba than the US Congress does.
The Congressional Black Caucus visited Cuba and met with Castro and had nothing but great things to say about him. They gave him glowing reviews and said they loved him and their time over there.
But I guess it's hardly a surprise that any private organization has more integrity than Congress.

jwilson07: I see the liberals are re writing history...again. Under Batista you could leave the country, change jobs, or even have a newspaper. Castro is a thug and a killer, stop the liberal crap of trying to paint up a turd like Fidel.

"Batista established tighter censorship of the media, while also utilizing his anti-Communist secret police and U.S.-supplied weaponry to carry out wide-scale violence, torture and public executions; ultimately killing as many as 20,000 Cubans."

Facts, always so convenient for conservatives.

Beef Swellington: Yes, but how many has Castro Killed? How does it compare to the U.S.?

Well, the discussion I was commenting on wasn't about Castro, it was about Communism generally. But since you asked (and apparently you don't know how to use Google by yourself yet) here's some basics:

The Cuban Revolution killed roughly 16,000
The Katyn Massacre (ordered by Che Guevara) killed roughly 20000
Another roughly 5000 have been executed in the years since the revolution
An estimated 77,000 have died attempting to flee Cuba (including the 72 men, women, and children who were killed in the "tugboat massacre"). At one point the UN estimated that 6 people died trying to flee Cuba every day.

Cool Story Bro:

Last month I quickly discovered how lousy the cafeteria is at my new office. How? Because they made Cuban sandwiches with GROUND PORK. Seriously....WTF!?

/Ground pork is for pasta sauce.
//Made the mistake of getting one, and tiny pork pieces kept falling out of said sandwich.
///And last week they had something called "Caesar Salad Pizza"....cheese pizza with shredded lettuce and croutons on top.
////What are they smoking?

as first time commie dictators go, castro's a farking sweetheart. 1) he let most of the folks take a flight or boat ride to america initially. hence why there are many in southern florida still biatching about this. also, probably why he's held onto power so long. 2) his killing/oppression level is tiny compared to others who have rolled into a dictatorship claiming to be either a commie or a liberator.

/why do we have an embargo on a place with such fine smokes and drinks again?

The Katyn Massacre in the Katyn woods outside Smolensk by Soviet troops in 1940 was ordered by a then 12 year old Argentinian boy?

Except that they didn't, from that pic. I see that about half of the seats in that pic are empty.

But then again, maybe folks were walking around checking out the new digs rather than watch a boring, losing "effort" by the home team:

The announced attendance was 36,601 people, a sell-out at the new Marlins Park.

Odd definition of "sell-out": Seating capacity is 37,000.

beta_plus: This text is now purple: jayhawk88: Twitter rumor going around right now that there are only 26 college degrees between all players and coaches currently in baseball. That can't be right, can it?

It can be, given that most professional drafts occur of high school players, and the baseball has a huge influx of Caribbean players of a similar age.

I would suspect that most hockey players don't have a college degree, either.

Not to mention I doubt the NFL and NBA's degree counts are weighted by "Sociology degrees from FSU or Michigan State" vs. "Mechanical Engineering degrees from MIT".
