AliceBToklasLives: In all seriousness, can anyone provide one (1) rational, secular argument against same-sex marriage?

Just one.

Anyone?

Hello!

If one were so inclined, one could argue that as acceptance for gay marriage has increased, there has been a correlation with straight-marriage divorce rates and couples choosing to give birth or adopt children without getting married.

Of course, one could also more convincingly argue that a decline in respect and desire for straight marriage is tied to the efforts of the religious right to formally prohibit gay marriage - seeing that even those who are denied the right to marry can form loving, committed relationships over the long term could make one question the value of marriage in general.

Exactly! I thought about putting in a provision for rape and incest but if its not an exception for abortion, I don't see a reason we should include it in the required marriage bill. Deal with it and thank God for your gifts.

It was unprecedented in the lack of recusal, Kagan included. It's tough for Kagan to have even considered recusal - I mean, do you think Scalia and Thomas would follow her ethical example considering they had farking dinner with the god damn man arguing the plaintiff's case?

I am sick of hearing this argument. Name one piece of legislation that Taxbongo passed as President from 1776 to 2008. Every other President passed legislation (good or bad) during that time period. (And no, don't give me that William Henry Harrison excuse. He loved this country far more than Taxbongo does.) Taxbongo had two-hundred-and-thirty-three years to do something and he did nothing. That is why the Founding Fathers™ hated him.

I'm in a city with a right-wing lesbian newspaper columnist. I know more than one gay divorcee. Life here is peachy; certainly no worse, and arguably better than, many American locations that actively restrict equal marriage rights. To see people declare the end of families, society, and the economy as unavoidable outcomes of allowing people of the same gender to get married kind of comes into conflict with the world I live in every. single. day.

Who am I gonna believe, these fools or my lying eyes?

It may work in Canada, sure, but the US is a very different society. Different heritage, different popular culture, different demographics, heck, even different food. You simply can't apply the Canadian example.

Gay marriage may be perfectly fine in Canada, Argentina, Belgium, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, and Sweden, but it will be an unmitigated disaster in America.

The majority of those 250 million Christians have no problem with marriage equality. However the entire problem with your argument is no one is telling the Churches they have to do anything. The state licenses priests to perform civil marriage. Not the other way around. Much like the state allows ship captains, judges, notary publics, star fleet admirals (as was the case in my brothers wedding), etc to perform marriage ceremony's as well.

The church can call it whatever they want. Which they do.

You can already get married without a church. In fact, a marriage performed in a church must be "blessed" by our government before it has any legal standing. There's no reason to force them further away from the practice. Let them do what they want. We just shouldn't let them tell anyone else what they're allowed to do.

You are missing the point. Marriage the legal contract is getting confused with marriage the religious sacrament. The easy answer is to stop calling the legal contract marriage. Call it a civil union for everybody, and let marriage be an issue of private institutions, whether it be your church, a tree stump or a pagan cleric. Who cares. Separate the confusion of the two and the problem goes away.

But to add one more twist only the state provides the legal framework to break up that marriage, divorce. Some churches will not even acknowledge that divorce.

Bonus whatever the fark this is:

Thirty years earlier, young Pat Moynihan had raised an alarm about the breakdown of marriage in his seminal Report on the Negro Family. The out-of-wedlock birthrate for black children in 1965 was then just 22%. Young Pat Moynihan saw this as dangerous. Today, the out-of-wedlock birthrate for the whole nation is 42%.

Apparently gay people getting married will result in straight black people staying single to have babies. What in the actual fark is he rambling about here?

First off, you'd need to change thousands of laws and regulations to reflect this (I suppose you could pass some sort of law that says "Civil-Union = Marriage for all legal purposes"... dunno.. IANAL).

Second, it most certainly will not go away. Remember when the birthers told us "If Fartbongo just shows his long form birf certicft this will all just go away."?

The problem isn't about what you call gay marriage, the problem is that the people who oppose it consider gay people to be second class citizens (at best).
