If we care about poverty, income mobility, health, education, and welfare, we need to support true marriage. Barack Obama is the most anti-marriage president in our history education and women's rights.

FTFY Subby.

Those two things have done more in the fight against poverty, and more for income mobility, health, and welfare of the human species than any of our other meager attempts at alleviating human suffering.

PlatinumDragon: It's really odd to read the anti-equal marriage stuff being tossed out there from here in Canuckistan. I wonder what planet these people are living on, because it's clearly not the one I'm on.

I'm in a city with a right-wing lesbian newspaper columnist. I know more than one gay divorcee. Life here is peachy; certainly no worse, and arguably better than, many American locations that actively restrict equal marriage rights. To see people declare the end of families, society, and the economy as unavoidable outcomes of allowing people of the same gender to get married kind of comes into conflict with the world I live in every. single. day.

Who am I gonna believe, these fools or my lying eyes?

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

- Isaac Asimov

I'd imagine this is part of the difference between Canada and the U.S.

After a stupidly long windup, this guy actually delivers a fastball straight into the gut of Obama's moronic statement about the role of the Supreme Court.

His dissection of Obama's claimed support for the Affordable Care Act contrasted with the much broader support for the "It's OK to Hate Gays Act" passed in 1996 was interesting and spoke volumes about how quickly society has changed for the better.

But Obama's double-speak and hypocrisy does not suddenly make it OK for heterosexuals (ha ha) to limit the rights of others.

It may work in Canada, sure, but the US is a very different society. Different heritage, different popular culture, different demographics, heck, even different food. You simply can't apply the Canadian example.

Gay marriage may be perfectly fine in Canada, Argentina, Belgium, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, and Sweden, but it will be an unmitigated disaster in America.

The only even-close-to-rational argument I can think of is exploitation of gay marriage for tax and insurance purposes...although you can exploit a regular marriage for the same purpose, so it's a moot point.

OneTimed: Is it wrong if I just flat-out label everyone who claims "family values" as a sociopathic busybody who wants to make everyone else just as miserable as them?

Only as wrong as any other generalization, although there does seem to be a strong element of resentment toward others who are clearly living fulfilling lives while maintaining lifestyles and ideals that are contrary to the busybodies' inflexible social programming. It strikes me as similar to the resentment of unionized workers' wages and benefits, resentment of universal health care systems in other countries, etc... for a group of people that claim socialists want to impose equal poverty through theft and Occupy participants are just envious of the wealth of others, they sure seem hell-bent on implementing shared misery for all, using their own misery as a baseline, instead of seeking to improve the lives of everyone.

It was unprecedented in the lack of recusal, Kagan included. It's tough for Kagan to have even considered recusal - I mean, do you think Scalia and Thomas would follow her ethical example considering they had farking dinner with the god damn man arguing the plaintiff's case?

Well, yeah, but that would come after my saliva lubed it up enough to get it inside.

As an aside, I'd like to point out that with his first executive order, Governor Brownback created an Office of the Repealer specifically to find outdated and unenforceable laws and regulations so that their repeal could be expedited. The sodomy ban was not one of the laws recommended for repeal at the beginning of this year even though it has been ruled unconstitutional and completely unenforceable.
