The Freedom From Religion Foundation's "Nobody died for our sins. Jesus Christ is a myth" banner was placed in the park to protest the Christian signs and crosses that have been erected their ahead of Easter for the past five years

An anti-religious banner at a city park in Streator, Illinois was stolen on Saturday, and the atheist group that placed it there claims that the theft was a Class 4 felony under Illinois' hate crime laws.

Hate crime? Really? And you wonder why your community sees you as a bunch of nutters

"It is so dismaying to see mob rule prevail," said Annie Laurie Gaylor, FFRF co-president. "This vandalism amounts to censorship and suppression of minority viewpoints."

No, it doesn't. The government didn't steal your sign, nor is it stopping you from replacing it or even airing your viewpoints in the press.

And its absolutely their right to be that douche-tastic. Which, I'm pretty sure, was their point. But then, this is the FFRF, so... yeah. Douchy. If they attacked the Family, I'd like them more, and maybe even donate. But if they attacked the Family they would probably not exist any longer, soooo.

Screw you Ethel!

I have to assume he meant stealing it. After all, all the sign did was express a particular belief, the same as the other displays that had been set up. (He didn't steal the other displays, he chose to make one of his own, to make a point.)

I also enjoyed this swipe at the tax exempt status of churches:

The only viewpoint that is going to be heard in Streater is a Christian viewpoint. There are tax-exempt Christian churches throughout Streater where it is appropriate to place Christian crosses and displays. A public park is not one of them."

This is in spite of the fact that they themselves are a tax exempt organization

I'm not even religious but something about this organization really grates on me. Perhaps it is the manner in which they call themselves "freethinkers", as if anyone who chooses to practice a religion is not thinking freely.

Let's face it people, Easter is the only offensive Christian holiday.

Anyone can celebrate someone's birthday or even memorialize them on the anniversary of the day they died. But to have a party to celebrate the lie that someone came back from the dead as a zombie? The entire notion of a real life zombie is offensive and odious.

Putting up a banner expressing sanity during this offensively stupid holiday is a pretty good way to get people to wake up about the bullcrap they've been spoon fed all their lives.

Although I understand the why of it, I don't agree with them putting the sign up. I don't think it's about conversion, it's about a pissing contest. Nobody wins.

I'm the first to shout that atheism has become it's own religion...with that said, subby implying that the FFRF was "trolling an entire park" by putting up their sign is missing the point. By that definition it's trolling Muslims, Jews, agnostics and atheists when someone puts a Christian sign/cross in a public area.

Personally, I don't care what you, you, you or you (especially not YOU) believe. And honestly, do you really give a flying fark what I think? Let's just call the whole thing off.

if the christian sign was attacking the beliefs of muslims, jews, agnostics or atheists, the it would be a troll move.

If they put up a sign that says "i don't believe in god and I'm super ok" thats different than putting up a sign that says "you belief system is wrong and stupid and mine totally rocks"

(720 ILCS 5/12-7.1) (from Ch. 38, par. 12-7.1)
(Text of Section from P.A. 96-1551)
Sec. 12-7.1. Hate crime.
(a) A person commits hate crime when, by reason of the actual or perceived ... religion ... of another individual or group of individuals, regardless of the existence of any other motivating factor or factors, he commits ... misdemeanor theft ...

Based on the law, it would appear that this is, in fact, a hate crime.

Considering the viewpoint it was espousing, the timing was perfect. What better time is there to discount the crucifixion/resurrection myth than around the time that myth is celebrated?
