Look at all those southern states. Heh.

For comparison, can anyone fine a list of states that show which allow abstinence only sex ed? My google fu is weak...

List fails without your mom's house.

State list with the rate per 1,000 teenage girls:

1. Mississippi 55

2. New Mexico 52.9

3. Arkansas 52.5

4. Texas 52.2

5.Oklahoma 50.4

6. Louisiana 47.7

7. Kentucky 46.2

Surely this has nothing to do with only teaching abstinence.

No wonder everybody is so damn cranky in New England.

44. Rhode Island
45. Maine
47. Connecticut
48. Vermont
49. Massachusetts
50. New Hampshire

It's no wonder the religious idiots favour abstinence only

Abstinence only method of birth control: Have sex, and use a whole lot of prayer to Jesus

It almost guarantees you say your prayers.

The rate for teenage moms reached its lowest point since record-keeping began in 1940. The rate fell 9 percent to about 34 per 1,000 girls ages 15 through 19. The decline was seen among all racial and ethnic groups.

Remember this the next time you read another "oh, society is all falling apart because rap videos/sexting/girls in short shorts" yarns. There's probably one coming in the next few days. It's probably being written by Bill Bennett this very minute.

The fact that the age of consent in New Mexico is 14 might have something to do with its ranking.

19. Indiana 37.3

Woohoo! First among Northern states. Indiana: the Mississippi of the North.

2012-04-10 10:43:46 AM
So why does the South, God's country, have such a problem with STDs and teen pregnancy?

2012-04-10 10:44:26 AM
Look at all those conservative states. Compare them to those hippy liberal states whose teen pregnancy rates are through the roof! This nation is falling apart because all those liberals are getting pregnant and having welfare babies as teenager and just keep popping them out all on OUR DIME!

/oh, wait...

Because the rest of you unbelievers are ruining all the prayers for those devout enough to bask in his eternal love.

You're right, because this is an article about birth rates not pregnancies. This list has nothing to do with the residents of the "educated states" killing their unborn children. Children in the south never use birth control because they've never heard of it before. It's the same reason they never get drunk or use drugs.

Because when it's a hike to the closest dirt road, never mind a paved one, there is nothing to do, but fight, drink, and make out.

Just wondering, if this list is unwed mothers or both wed/unwed mothers. My suspicion is that it's both.

Jake Havechek: So why does the South, God's country, have such a problem with STDs and teen pregnancy?

In my state, It's because of the influx of Godless people from the north coupled with a high immigrant population. If I could choose between the two I'd keep the immigrants because they actually add something to the culture and they are the nicest people in the world. The Yankees on the other hand, I've seen several of them throw hissy fits in public over the stupidest things, like a long bank line.

This. The problem is that easy, poor Southern women are overcome with emotion upon the sight of wealthy, debonair Yankee men. They were much more chaste when their only options were rednecks and guys with the Southern Swoop haircut.

While we are at it, the AOC for the top and the bottom states on the list:

1. Mississippi 16
2. New Mexico 17
3. Arkansas 16
4. Texas 17
5. Oklahoma 16
6. Louisiana 17

...

44. Rhode Island 16
45. Maine 16
47. Connecticut 16
48. Vermont 16
49. Massachusetts 16
50. New Hampshire 16

Statistically speaking, lower age of consent values correlate with lower teen birth rates.

Never really understood only teaching abstinence based sex ed. Sure teach them it's probably the better way until they are mature enough to handle it, but don't skimp out on the other methods. I'm in the south, and have had plenty of young married couples come up to the pharmacy trying to find out how NOT to get pregnant, so this spreads much further than just unwed 15 year olds. It's sad really.

/Valtrex is one of the top ten fastest selling drugs in this area
//would never deny teens access to condoms
///glad to be out of retail pharmacy.

I guess New England raises smarter, more pragmatic children than the rest of the country. Let me just put that in the "Things We Already Knew" file.

Can we get a quick color coding of that list for (D) or (R)?

All politics/religion jokes aside, the correlation with poverty rates is probably the more likely culprit. But funny how poverty rates and low education also correlate predictably to a certain political / religious leaning.

If you actually cared, you could bother to 'correct' the numbers by the abortion rate. You'll still get the same list of failures, although you're right that the South tends to have lower abortion rates (but they're low enough across the board relative to the birth rates that it doesn't move the needle much - even if you make the assumption that every single abortion is sought by a teenager).

This is only because those filthy condom-wearing sluts in the Blue states are getting payouts from our federal government at the expense of Red state taxpayers. Clearly this is Obama's fault.
