Mr Afridi, however, disputes the idea that moustaches are unIslamic and points to the example of Umar ibn al-Khattab, an adviser to the Prophet Mohammed who became the second Muslim caliph. He was a renowned wrestler and wore a moustache twisted into points.

This is the most idiotic thing I've seen yet from extremists.

I work in the Middle East/Southeast Asia, and there are plenty of people who sport large beards and mustaches according to whatever tradition happens to be followed in the area, or whatever happens to be the style.

Extremists seem to pick and choose what ridiculous rules to implement and then bully and demean the people in order to display their 'devotion'.

This is ridiculous.

Well it actually seems that the religious extremists have gotten so out of hand in the conservative Muslim nations that the people are starting to hate them just as much as the west and their own governments, if not more. Perhaps killing and threatening your own people leads to contempt. They should have acted like the Black Panthers or something, actually providing for and protecting the local oppressed people but they decided to be more like 3rd word governments by taking from and killing the oppressed people. They missed a pretty good opportunity in my opinion and opened their lands up for progressive and liberal reforms, which is expressed currently through revolution and upheaval. The youth (majorities in almost any 3rd world nation), grew up terrorized by these asshats and has also had more access to information and technology (and through that, education and knowledge). It would be great to see the religious wackos lose their power, though it will be a tough road to get there. Progress is always inevitable though, no matter how much the backwards conservatives try to fight it.

I am so glad I don't live in one of those dark ages countries, where you can be put to death for the smallest thing.

One thing that always confused me though; You have the 'mosque police' who go around and make sure that on holy days or worship times, that you are not downtown at the coffee shop or shopping at the bazaar. But what about the shop owners who are open, allowing you to be somewhere else, and what about the 'police' themselves? Shouldn't they be praying?

TheJoe03: {snip} Progress is always inevitable though, no matter how much the backwards conservatives try to fight it.

Don't you believe it. Liberals & conservatives don't matter, and neither does anything else. Progress (as we understand it) is an idea no more than 200 years old, and there's no rational cause to believe that it's "inevitable." Progress is defined in our industrial-age notion, as an arrow pointing in an upward direction, but we all know it's more complex than that. And a number of factors point to our having to redefine "progress" radically in the next century.

I call bullshiat on that one. We have "progressed" since the 50s, in 1950 we progressed a whole lot since 1850, in 1850 we progressed since 1750, etc etc. It's very rare that a civilization will regress and become less educated, less technologically advanced, and less socially liberal over time.
