Call me cynical, but I suspect he simply screwed up and needed an excuse.

Joerg told cops the car had spun out of control after he steered out of the way, slipping on leaves on the road as he passed through a wooded area.

WTF? Wasn't he in a Ferrari? Either Ferraris don't handle as well as I've been told they do, or this guy can't drive.

My vote is for "can't drive". People do all sorts of dumb things with powerful cars. He may have nailed the throttle on a slick spot, or on leaves.

1am north out of Redding towards Yreka heading home from Disneyland we hit a porcupine that was crossing the highway..That thing was HUGE, I knew better than to freak out and swerve off into the trees or something, but It managed to stick spines all along the plastic side ground effects and tires of our montana, so I guess it got it's revenge. Still felt awful after.

/Redding was a scary place, we were going to stop there for the night but the two motels we stopped at were really gross, looked like they rented by the hou and didn't clean up afterwardsr. Yreka is great tho'.:-)

Ferraris are not GM sedans, and they are not all made to do the same thing. They may be able to drive like a leaf on the wind, but if you do the wrong thing, it may try to kill you. Handling well does not automatically mean forgiving of errors.

I bet Ferrari's are not that special in Europe anyway.

/Too much top gear.

If I was the insurance company, I would only pay the cost of repairs sustained if he had run over the hedgehog.

If I was the cop on the scene, I would issue him a citation for endangering the lives of other humans because he swerved for a rodent.

Yeah, most cops are dicks so I can see that one.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I remember some dude driving a sports car into a lake and claiming he did it to avoid hitting birds. Turns out someone else had filmed the whole thing and there were no birds.

It made the rounds on Fark a year or so ago.

You can get a nice, never wreaked, low mile Testarossa for a third of what they are claiming this one was worth.

Only thirty thousand euros in damage. I'm calling bs.

Gotta confess, I'd probably do the same thing.

The swerving part, not so much the crashing.

Pounds, not euros. They are claiming more in damage then a nice Testarossa is worth.

The whores up there are still handing down the family tradition from when they were gold-rush towns. Probably the motels still have the madams' original sheets.

Yeah, how dare the police issue a ticket when someone swerves and crashes their car to avoid a small animal, thus endangering other people. Wouldn't be a fark thread without some fun cop bashing.

Insurance might not pay for that one. It sounds like he lost control of the car by being a poor driver. If hitting it had made him lose control then it would be different but as it is, it sounds like he purposefully drove outside the safe operating conditions and wrecked. He might be able to argue the slippery leaves angle but it's going to be a fight.

Plus, hedgehogs are slow. Unless he was rounding a curve or something there is no excuse to end up in a panic situation.

At least that's the way it works in the US, maybe the UK rules favor the driver.

With that said, he can probably afford to fix it himself.

Insurance fraud was my first thought, too.

Being a bad driver does not absolve your insurance company of paying your claim, it does however indicate that they should up your premiums for future coverage. As to swerving to avoid an animal, the wife did that back when we were dating, I told her never to do that again then walked to where I could make a call to get us towed off the decorative stones lining the ditch she had driven into. I can totally buy this guys story even if it is the wrong call.

It doesn't matter if he made up a story about swerving to miss an animal or not. The insurance company would treat the claim the same way. Up goes the premiums.

On the other hand, hitting the hedgehog would have probably totaled the Ferrari too.

It's obvious from the picture that the dickwad was driving on the wrong side of the road.

2012-04-09 08:49:05 PM
In the US, the "at fault" and whether or not the car is totaled determines if you have to make a claim on collision or comprehensive. Collision claims are bad news and is what I meant by the insurance might not pay since it seems like it was his fault.

Sin_City_Superhero: WTF? Wasn't he in a Ferrari? Either Ferraris don't handle as well as I've been told they do, or this guy can't drive.

It depends on the Ferrari. I've read about issues with the 360, Enzo, and a few others. The Enzo, for example, had brutal snap oversteer. Older Ferraris also didn't have all the computer assistance they have now.

Check out the recent Top Gear with the Stig driving the FF on ice. As soon as he hits 4th gear the AWD system is disengaged and he plows head first into a snowbank.

I'm sure a 458 with the computer on will perform miracles for even the most hamfisted driver, but anyone who drives like Ryan Dunn is going to kill themselves.

Wrong. Colors revived Sonic, and Generations restored him to full health. Generations took one of the worst levels from the absolute worst Sonic game (and one of the absolute worst games ever made) and made it one of the most enjoyable levels of the game, that's how revitalized Sonic is.

I live in Maine and I've taken out 2 chipmunks that ran under my tires. A duck that flew into the side of my car and 3 birds that simply choose to not get out of the road. They make a wonderful sound when they slam into your grill.

I will only swerve for a Moose and that is it. Anything else I'm hitting head on, even a bear which I have come across.

Normally it was wont to be 12 feet long, but it can be the size of an aeroplane hangar.
