We can only imagine how Roosevelt would view this.

After I just spent a whole column saying how Roosevelt would view this.

Let me guess, for not being nearly social enough?

If you read it, the article isn't as nonsensical as it first appears. It's still stupid to say he'd try to kill it.

exactly. He'd wonder why in the hell we let the rich off so easy.

Let's dig him up and ask him.

Robert Samuelson, still dumb as a bag of hammers

E.J. Dionne is the only actual liberal at the Washington Post. The other ostensibly leftish columnists are craven morons who value their membership in the Beltway cocktail circuit more than critical thinking.

2012-04-09 01:14:47 PM
Social Security has evolved into something he never intended and actively opposed.

It has become what was then called "the dole" and is now known as "welfare."

False premise. It is not "welfare" or "the dole" or anything like it. It is a form of insurance. You pay into it while you work, and then you get it back once you retire.

The people who are claiming that Social Security Insurance is some kind of "handout" are pushing a very dangerous agenda.

2012-04-09 01:15:33 PM
Oh good, Zombie FDR and Zombie Reagan can be the Republican ticket then.

Sorry, Mitt.

As in, the current system isn't progressive enough for FDR?

[checks article]

Yeah, that's what I thought. He'd be fighting to increase contributions to SSA, not decrease payouts. I'm always totally shocked when FDR turns out to be more progressive than modern Dems. Shocked I say.

I'm sick of the founding fathers and politicians from the past being lionized to such a degree that their way is the only righteous way. It's even more telling that people with an agenda insert their own thinking and terminology into their heads. Or maybe they have a time machine and... whatever

It's a little known historical oddity that Taft would have loved Lean Cuisine, but would have consumed 14 portions in a single meal.

Considering his proposal of the Second Bill of Right, I'd say he'd fight for more contribution into the Social Security System and other social welfare program.

I think he would have loved Jackass style stunts, but really opposed American Idol type contest. That man loved a good shooting duel.

I strongly support Social Security. But in truth it is a spending program "for the general welfare" of the country. The trick is to recognize that "welfare" isn't a dirty word.

An uncited line from a wiki article? Hell, the actual decision itself doesn't mention "insurance" at all.
Overall that was a terrible wiki artcle, since it didn't explain how that case reached the USSC in the first place.

In my college classes, I teach my kids how wonderful of a tool Wikipedia is. You see, Wikipedia is a nice collection of claims that are supposed to be cited. You never take your conclusions or information from wikipedia, rather you click the farking citations, read the primary sources and draw your own conclusions.

In future classes, I will amend that claim to - Wikipedia is a wonderful tool, if you're not a lazy moran.

While there is no way Social Security has changed beyond FDR's intent, it is completely justifiable to make up that the WaPo is now hard line conservative.

Nothing has changed about social security itself. The thing that's changed is that our government decided to spend the SS money instead of you, actually saving it.

Actaully, with that you have to be carful. The SS trust fund already has about 2.5 Trillion of Goverment Debt that will evenutally end up costing us dearly in the long run if we can't get our overall finances together. Just the interest on these IOUs accounts for about $120 Billion per year.

While SS surplusses help to offset deficts in the 'On-Book' Budget it also increases the amount of money we need to cough up to pay the interest. I am not sure that it is within our best interest to further expand the SS Trust fund and some may even think that it may best to reduce it some.

In any case, the fixes for SS are pretty simple compared to the other Budgetary monsters such as Medicare, DoD, Interest on the Public Debt, etc.
