It's called character assassination. You're not supposed to feel bad about just another THUG getting killed. You don't have to think about the law and its application if the only person killed is a no good THUG.

Conversely, it's disingenuous to portray him as an angelic faced twelve-year old as well, but since this is now a partisan issue and we're all lined up according to teams, we have to portray our positions in cartoonish extremes.

The reality was he probably was somewhere in between like the rest of us. And like what will probably happen to the rest of us, he didn't do anything to "deserve" his demise.

More than anything, I'm getting real farking uneasy with American's apparent zeal for vigilante justice. The fact that the press keeps bringing up crap like the bag with Marijuana "residue" in it, the un-STOLEN jewelry in his bag, the tattoos, the tweets, etc... the attempt to characterize the kid as somehow dangerous based upon knowledge that Zimmerman couldn't have possibly possessed... it tells me that we, as Americans react less negatively to *MURDER* when we can identify the victim as a bad guy.

Which isn't how a system of justice is supposed to work.

Because this is all in the context of the original press framing of Zimmerman as a fat white man with a past and Martin as a small, virginal black child of age 12 (based on photos).

Most people's initial reactions were emotional, based upon the premise as described by the media. Most of the backlash has also been the emotional response to said premise being repeatedly demonstrated to be untrue.

No one would have cared if Martin had been a gangbanger. Now that it appears he was just as close to being a gangbanger as he was to being an innocent child, the nation is far less interested in the case itself and far more about the media manipulation that got it there.

This circus has never been about Trayvon Martin, the corpse. It's always been about Trayvon Martin, the political symbol. Unfortunately, news like this greatly changes the political calculus.

And what if he had M&Ms or perhaps a Three Musketeers bar. Would it get the same attention? I say no, because there's something so inherently innocent and child-like about Skittles, it just ramps up the outrage that some mother's sweet young boy should be gunned down like Al Capone as he eats his colorful, chewy candies.

Agreed - but here's the tough reality of guns: If person A pulls a gun on person B, and tells person B to stop doing whatever he/she is doing, then there are only two outcomes: 1) person B stops, 2) person B dies. (option 3, where B gets the gun form A and hills them, only happens in Chuck Norris movies)

The real question to ask is, did person A have any right to pull the gun in the first place? After that gun is pulled...well, life just sucks.

Because certain people weren't happy with the facts and decided to make a kid out to be a saint and use a picture that made him look like he was smaller and younger than he was. Once that happened you could guarantee the other side was going to do their best to claim he was far from that angelic early teen certain people wanted to claim he was.

You're right, it doesn't matter. But it also didn't matter when they were portraying him inaccurately either. This whole thing has been one statement after another to sway public opinion one way or the other.

A few reasons:

The Martin legal/PR team dug up any dirt on Zimmerman they could to misportray the situation, and the media happiky reported it while ignoring Martin. His criminal background was greatly exxagerated, his calls to 911 were misreported (only 8 times in a uear, not 50), the height/weight difference was misreported, the race of Zimmerman was missreported and greatlty ignored when corrected, the 911 call was maliciously edited, and most of all, using a smiling picture of Martin at 12 years. All to deceptivelty portray Zimmerman's assumed guilt.

The media also deceptively reported that the screaming was by Martin when the only eyewitness identifies zimmerman. If this witness was cited everytime the 911 screaming was brought up most people would assume Zimmerman acted appropriately, or at the very least that the facts of the case need to be analyzed more before rushing to judgement.

3) There is also no evidence that Zimmerman confronted Martin. From what we hear from the 911 call all we know is that for a short distance Zimmerman followed from a distance to report to the 911 dispatch the direction he was running so the police could intercept him. He loses sight of him and appear to stop hos forward movement.

Because people recieved such a distorted view of Zimmerman and the Martin/media built narrative was the ONLY view presented to the publc, it makes sense to point to his social media posts that show his drug dealings, thefts and violent acts, that run counter to the image of a big burly white man chasing down as a little black boy who was helpess to defend himself.

Zimmerman's guilt has not been established. A record of bar disputes 6 years prior should be just as irrelevent to the case, if not more.

leave your assumptions back in the 50's, people. We don't know how much of any of this is just posing for a girl, or looking tough in front of his friends. His English teacher would be aghast at the lack of anything remotely resembling English in any of those posts. Which gang did he belong to? Tattoos at that age = gang activity/affiliation. Depending on the way the PR wind is blowing, the media will either be positive or negative about the boy. The family will obviously be positive, but I want the FACTS, not the TRUTH. Was he a Blood? Their initiation routines are normally brutal, and you have to commit random acts of violence to move up in the gang. Empty weed bag? Was he a pothead that young or was he a dealer? Did he do other drugs. Facts, people, not the truth. The truth can be twisted, facts can be used.
OTOH:
Was he a saint? Was he sexually active ... with your daughter? Well, FTA, he was asking about the physical aspects of sexual intercourse and he liked the opposite sex, so someone's daughter was getting the dark chocolate.(Yes, I know Easter was yesterday, you're welcome). The media will, eventually, get around to examining every little aspect of this young man's life. And we will hear about it ad infinitum.

Callous: Yea actually there is. Racists are people hate other people for reasons they often can't even articulate. Race-baiters are in for the money they can make stirring the pot. That's not to say that one individual can't be both.

Maybe I just see the term racist as a bit more broad. It also includes people who believe that one race is naturally superior to another or that the races shouldn't co mingle socially or genetically. Both supremacists and segregationists would fall into the racist category and neither necessarily has to hate other races. If they fit, I don't see why a person who stirs up hatred and violence on the strict basis of race somehow gets a dodge out of that category.

As a side note, a big FARK YOU to CNN for their decision that saying the N-word is now okay on their broadcasts.
